  • A large, fixed price taxi fare sign. - Sharm El Sheikh
    A large,fixed price taxi
    fare sign.
    by mr.small
These prices are the ones fixed by the local Sinai government. The fixed price sticker for each type of taxi should be fixed in clear view on one of the windows, but may be hidden. They are about 4" across and round.I will update these prices if they change.
    LE = Egyptian pound

    Minibus (fixed routes)
From-Old Market, To- Naama Bay, Price= LE 1
    From-Old Market, To-Airport ,Price= LE 2
    From-Old Market, To- Nabq,Price= LE 3

    Taxi (white Bonnet)
    From-Naama Bay, To- Old Market, Price=LE 15
    From-Naama Bay,To- Hadaba,Price= LE 15
    From-Naama Bay,To- Airport,Price= LE 20
    From-Old Market,To- Hadaba,Price= LE 15
    From-Old Market,To- Airport,Price= LE 35
    From-Old Market,To- Nabq,Price= LE 40

    Peugeot (Blue Bonnet)
From-Naama Bay, To- Old Market ,Price= LE 25
    From-Naama Bay,To- Hadaba,Price= LE 25
    From-Old Market,To- Hadaba,Price= LE 25
    From-Naama Bay,To- Airport,Price= LE 35
    From-Old Market,To- Nabq,Price= LE 45

To work out the price of the complete journey that is not listed just add the 2 or 3 legs together. I.E. from Hadaba to the airport in a taxi it would be LE 15 for the Hadaba to Naama Bay plus LE 20 for Naama Bay to the airport making a complete fare of LE 35.
Unfortunately you will never get these prices from the taxis inside the airport, they normally want at least 4 times the proper rate. To get these prices we walk the 100 yards from the terminal building up to the main road and get one from there, these will still try it on but can be beaten down to the right price pretty easily.

Its very easy to get a taxi in Sharm you only have to walk out the front of the hotel & wave your arms in the air & about 6 taxi's will pull up beside you.

Only use the blue & white taxi's as these are properly registered taxi's. Always agree a price with the driver before getting in otherwise they charge you well over the right price.

Look out for the sticker in the front window (Looks abit like a tax disc) this will tell u exactly how much you should pay & that is correct prices given by the government.

the best way to get around Sharm without a shadow of a doubt is by local taxi! Just be sure to confirm a price BEFORE you get in! you may have to haggle ( hehe! ok ok you WILL have to haggle!) If you're not sure how much a journey should cost, ask someone in your hotel, they know the rough amount you should be looking for. The taxi drivers are very friendly, although let me warn you that I never travelled in one taxi that would have passed a UK MOT! and I never met a driver that had ever taken a test of any kind! But they are the best, maybe even the only way to get around!

By the gates - a very orderly
    queue... ;o)
    by FletteMette
Sharm El Sheikh airport can imho best be described as chaotic... :o) It is obviously too small for the large amount of tourists this area gets.

Our arrival was fairly painless, we had our visas already and didn't have to stand in the *very* long queues to get visa-on-arrival. There are lots of guys in the arrivals area very eager to give you a trolley or "help" you with your suitcases - they'll expect you to pay them a couple of LE for their services. If you don't want any "help" a very firm "no thanks" will do the trick.

The departure was *very* chaotic. You will have to x-ray all your bags, not only the hand luggage - so you'll need to be able to lift your suitcases up (almost) a meter or so onto the conveyor belt (Or you can pay someone a couple of LE to do it for you). Check-in was pretty slow and inefficient - remember to get the exit card for immigration, which you'll have to fill out before going through passport control. (You're supposed to get this card at check-in, but the officers didn't give it to everyone).

The smoke filled departure hall has a few shops and some caf?s, but was *very* crowded and it was impossible to find somewhere to sit. Don't go through the scanners to the gates too early, as there's only a seating area, nothing else, by the gates (not even toilets).

Pay close attention to the announcements, as the information given on the screens could not be trusted. (Two planes were supposedly being boarded through the same gate at the same time, and our delayed plane was said to be departed approx. 1,5 hours before we actually took off...;o)

Update: a second terminal was opened in 2007. Which, hopefully, will mean that the situation at Sharm el Sheikh international airport has improved since our visit in 2006!

  • The best place to travel around Sharm el Sheikh is the taxi or the bus.
The taxi-drivers will stop you all the time if they see you walking on the street. If you travel by taxi haggle the price before you go in. They know you are a tourist and they will try to get more money!
The bus is blue and every 2 minutes you will find it on the road. You must stop them and say your destination.
The price for the local people is 50 piastres (like 0.20 cents (euro)), but if you are tourist normally you will pay 1 egyptian pound.
    1 euro= 7,50 egyptians pounds
    1 dollar = 6 egyptian pounds
    Dont pay more than that!!!!!
And it will be better if you give them the exact amount, cuz sometimes they wont give you back the change!

The most commonly used way of getting around Sharm is by taxi, but it is also possible by a rented car or motor. It is necessary to make a deal with a taxi driver about the charge. They will usually drive your for 10 LE from Naama Bay to Old Market which is about 6-7 km away. If one doesnt want to drive you for this money let him go, next one will be there in a second.

The driving in Sharm can put the Italians to shame. It seems quite erratic but I fortunately was not involved in an accident nor did I see an accident whilst I was there which was a suprise and a blessing.

Try and ascertain a price before you get into a taxi. It is worth researching prices to and from places before you engage the services of a taxi driver. Ask at the airport or at your hotel to find out roughly how much your trip should cost before talking to a taxi driver.

  • Hyatt's fleet of Mercedes - Sharm El Sheikh

At the Hyatt you have 3 choices to get to Naama Bay, they are:

    1. Walk. I would estimate that it would take appx. 40 mins at a moderate pace to walk into Naama Bay from the hotel. I would also estimate that you would be a little crazy in the to head to actually do it.

Prior to arrival, I had imagined we might talk a gentle stroll into Naama Bay from the hotel, but I had not banked on the heat - even at night. I should think if you did walk, you'd get there very hot and sweaty which would mean discomfort for the rest of the evening, and therefore, I don't recommend this route.

    2. Hyatt Mercedes transfers. The hotel itself has a fleet of black Mercedes as shown in the photo. They charge appx. £8 for a one way tranfser into the centre of Naama Bay. I'm sure that the drive is gentle and comfortable, and if money is no object then this would be my recommended mode. However, it's very expensive compared to.......

    3. The Blue & White Peugeot Taxis. There are always a few of these outside the main gates of the hotel and they are in a sense the local cab company. The maximum we paid to Naama Bay was 30 Egyptian Pounds (LE) or appx £3 sterling. The lowest we paid was 20 LE. Some start as high as 40 LE, and it seems they expect to be bargained with.
I read that these taxis take you on a bit of a white knuckle ride. While I wouldn't go that far, it's still, shall we say, an experience.

Some drive better than others, some of the cabs are so old you think a wheel might fall off at any minute, some think they can squeeze their cab in between 2 other cars on the carriageway and then realise they can't at the last second.

BUT, it really isn't that bad, and it's the only method we ever used to get to and from Naama Bay - without any problems too. There is no way that my husband and I would I have let eachother ride in them if we had any major concerns, so my advice is to choose this option as the happy medium of the 3 choices. Have a chat with the drivers too, some of them are very entertaining!

The subject of Taxis could also be included in the Warnings section of this page.

It is very easy to get a taxi, they drive past you at a rate of 400 a minute and you normally have to say "no" about 3 times before they leave you alone.

Headlight bulbs in taxis must last for years and years because headlights are only used to 'flash' people who are crazy enough to cross the road. The drivers don't need to switch them on at night because they can see where they are going.

Once you find the courage to use a taxi in Sharm, it will be fairly cheap although the obligatory haggling will take place.

    Typical Prices:
    Sharm to Airport: 50LE
Na'ama Bay to Hilton Hotel 20LE

It's best not to discuss the conditions of the cars

  • You will see taxis everywhere in Sharm, you don't usually even have to ask for one. Often, if you are by a road or walking towards a road people will ask you if you want a taxi.

If you are traveling from your hotel - stand outside it by the road and hold your hand out. A taxi will pull over. Make sure it a is a blue and white taxi though, these are the ones that are insured. When entering a taxi, there is a disc on the front winder (like a tax disc) on this will tell you how much you are supposed to pay.

Always negociate a price before you get in the taxi and if possible have the correct change or exchange money before you set off in the car. I was told by the rep at the hotel that some will say that they have no change and drive off.

Make sure that when you go to Naama Bay that you ask to be dropped off by Panorama, this is the main strip and where you want to be. The first time i went to Naama Bay by taxi the driver dropped us off by a back enterance and we got so much hassle, it was a bit daunting!

Be warned, taxis drive really fast and they don't indicate, or seem to look in their mirrors! It's such a relief when you have arrived to destination! Hehe.

From Dreams Beach Resort to Naama Bay i paid approximately 25 Egyptian pounds.
