Behind the wheel

The driving in Sharm can put the Italians to shame. It seems quite erratic but I fortunately was not involved in an accident nor did I see an accident whilst I was there which was a suprise and a blessing.

Try and ascertain a price before you get into a taxi. It is worth researching prices to and from places before you engage the services of a taxi driver. Ask at the airport or at your hotel to find out roughly how much your trip should cost before talking to a taxi driver.

Sharm El Sheikh is not reachable by train.
Going there from Cairo, you have to hit the road by car or bus and by plane from anywhere.
From Cairo to Sharm by plane is 60 minutes while the Superjet bus will make it in 7-8 hours. If you are willing to drive to there then you can make it in 5 hours non stop with the a car speed of 120km average.
The bus fare ranges from 55-65 egyptian pounds for a 1 way.
The best time for hitting the road is the midnight bus but you still have around 4 different buses daily that goes there starting 7 am.
If you are in Cairo and want to book your tickets in advance, perefed, then ask for the sharm el sheikh bus station in Al Torgoman area.
Egyptians gets a discounted price so dont feel confused when your Egyptian friends gets a different price.
The Bus to Sharm is equipped with AC, Toilet, TV/VCR and drinks and food. The laster of course is not for free.

Have fun in Sharm and have a safe trip.

''Boat Mascot''

Caral reef is what is Sharm El Sheikh famous for. Reef itself is near coast and easily accessible from the beach. Alternative is to take a boat tour.
You'll be taken to few different places where you can snorkel.
And the tour includes lounch and soft drinks.

The two main areas within Sharm el Sheikh are Naama Bay and Old Sharm. Once you are at any of those places, the best way to get around is by foot. However there is a considerable distance between the two and as far as I am aware, not much public transport.

However cabs are quite inexpensive and cost just 10 LE. But you can bargain and get the drivers to lower the price.

Taxi! anyone?

Getting to and from my resort I'd have to either grab a taxi or the resort bus. The taxi are ready at a drop of a hat along with vans to take you where you wanted to go.
Funny thing though, while we (band members) were in this taxi to Naima Bay during the evening the Egyptian drivers drive with their head lights out until they see an approaching car or pedestrian then, and only then will they cast their headlights only to turn them back off after passing car bus or pedestrian.
It was an eye opener for me and the rest of the gang.
Although it never seemed we were in danger, we did hear of an accident with a taxi driver and a few tourist.

Sharm taxi

The most commonly used way of getting around Sharm is by taxi, but it is also possible by a rented car or motor. It is necessary to make a deal with a taxi driver about the charge. They will usually drive your for 10 LE from Naama Bay to Old Market which is about 6-7 km away. If one doesnt want to drive you for this money let him go, next one will be there in a second.

the Suez canal

The fastest and easiest way to get to Sharm is by plane. There is an international airport about 15 minutes drive from Naama Bay. It is currently being reconstructed. This is also a unique opportunity to see the Sinai Peninsula and the Suez canal.

The Seascape Submarine is marketed heavily in Sharm el Sheikh. It has booking offices in a lot of the hotels and seems quite popular.

It is a glass bottom boat, admittedly a futuristic design, but it does not go under the water.

Bus and Taxis!

The best place to travel around Sharm el Sheikh is the taxi or the bus.
The taxi-drivers will stop you all the time if they see you walking on the street. If you travel by taxi haggle the price before you go in. They know you are a tourist and they will try to get more money!
The bus is blue and every 2 minutes you will find it on the road. You must stop them and say your destination.
The price for the local people is 50 piastres (like 0.20 cents (euro)), but if you are tourist normally you will pay 1 egyptian pound.
1 euro= 7,50 egyptians pounds
1 dollar = 6 egyptian pounds
Dont pay more than that!!!!!
And it will be better if you give them the exact amount, cuz sometimes they wont give you back the change!

The subject of Taxis could also be included in the Warnings section of this page.

It is very easy to get a taxi, they drive past you at a rate of 400 a minute and you normally have to say "no" about 3 times before they leave you alone.

Headlight bulbs in taxis must last for years and years because headlights are only used to 'flash' people who are crazy enough to cross the road. The drivers don't need to switch them on at night because they can see where they are going.

Once you find the courage to use a taxi in Sharm, it will be fairly cheap although the obligatory haggling will take place.

Typical Prices:
Sharm to Airport: 50LE
Na'ama Bay to Hilton Hotel 20LE

It's best not to discuss the conditions of the cars
