    Cruise to Esna

    cruise boats lined up

As part of our 3 day Nile Cruise, we stopped at Esna for a few hours. We had to get our place in the queue to go through the lock later in the day.

The ship docked up against other similar cruise boats, and we had to walk through the reception area of each boat to get to shore.

I would highly recommend the Nile cruise - it was certainly a relaxing method of transport to take us from one amazing attraction to another!

    Cruise on the Nile

Our boat has sailed off from Luxor at 17.30. According to the cruise program the following stop should be in Edfu (Idfu) which was situated on the distance of 110 kilometers from Luxor. We have been told that it would be at 9.00 in the next morning.

It meant that we should sail along the distance of 110 kilometers for 15 hours and a half. That meant the floating with the speed of 7 kilometers an hour - hardly there was more than a speed of a pedestrian. But it could not be! But it has come out everything was correct.

    Passing through the Isna sluice

    Passing through the Isna sluice

On a way to Idfu we should pass through a sluice (a lock) in Isna. Throughput of this sluice is very small. Therefore the excursion boats usually stand in a queue during several hours to pass through the sluice. There are 55 kilometers from Luxor to Isna. I think, we have arrived to the sluice about 22.00, but I was already deeply asleep at that time after the very sated with excursions day. I did not hear how the boat was moored to the mooring in the sluice.

However early in the morning at 5.00 I have woken up, when the boat had been knocked several times about the mooring, departing from the sluice. It meant that our boat was waiting for its turn and passing through the sluice about 7 hours or all the night long.

We saw many Egyptian ferrymen during our cruise. Traditionally river crossings have been the domain of several ferry services.

The single fare (April 2007) of the so-called 'local ferry' (also known as the 'National Ferry') is 1 LE - one Egyptian Pound - per passenger for foreigners.
Alternatively motorboats line the East Bank of the Nile all day providing a quicker, but more expensive (5LE), crossing to the other side.

Esna Hantour!! Give this horse and his driver some

When we were in Esna we took a coach ride. Since Esna is not a place where many tourists dock the driver made it a treat! We went all around town, made a visit to the lock and the building activities of the new lock, being created. It was GREAT!!

    Lock in Isna

One of the main reasons you will be stopping in Isna is because of the lock located here. This lock is designed to regulate the water level of the Nile, and it is clear when you get up to the lock how important this function is!

    Nile cruiseboat

What better way to arrive in Esna than by boat.
Boats of vaying luxury ply the Nile between Luxor and Aswan, offering cruises from 3 to 7 days, or longer.
