Don't run across the opening bridge!!

Don't wait til the last minute!

As we sat first in line waiting for them to open the bridge/gate to get in to Esna Lock, many people were running to get across it before it was absolutely impassable. It looked pretty dangerous! This last man across was even carrying a child and running to get across at the very last minute!! And it was absolutely unnecessary, because we noticed there was a higher walkway where pedestrians could walk across... but I guess they didn't want to walk up the stairs. So, be careful if you're wandering around the town as they're opening the gate and remember to use the pedestrian bridge!

Don't let the Carriage Drivers get to you!

The Carriage Driver in Hot Pursuit of us.

As we began our journey in to the town of Esna, there were plenty of carriage drivers waiting to try and earn some money. This guy followed us quite a way down the street. If you don't want a ride, just be firm and continue to tell him no or ignore him and he'll go away. If you do decide to take a ride, be sure and decide upon a price before you get in the carriage and maybe tell them you'll pay half now and half when you return... otherwise, they may try to ask for additional money and tips before you leave the carriage.

Watch out for Wheelbarrows falling from the sky!

    Construction, the Egyptian way!

There are no cranes in Middle Egypt, so construction teams here rely on the old fashioned way of bringing bricks to the roof. There is a person at the top, who controls a chain that pulls a full wheelbarrow full of bricks up to the top of the building!

This looked a little shady though, so watch out when you are walking past!

You are not able to go around Esna without police

Egypt is guarding her tourists very well! As a tourist you can't go anywhere on your own. Don't misunderstand! You can go where ever you like! But in some places you need police or army guidance.
That is not a trouble if you know the way. Al ham du lillah/Thank God, I have friends in Egypt who know the way.
When in Esna and you like to go intown, ask the policeman in front of the local souk (from the Corniche follow the Tourist souk to the Knoum Tempel. In front of the Temple turn left) and with a good baksheesh he will provide you with a guide through town.

    Healthcare spot in Isna

One of the members of our cruise, Joan got sick while on the boat.... definitely not a place to have an asthma attack!

It turns out that the healthcare systems there are not up to par with the rest of the world!
