On my first visit to Luxor, I came by tour bus from the Hurghada resort. On the second, however, I made things much more comfortable and went by plane direct from London. About 5-5.5 hours' flight, Luxor is served both by Egypt Air (but you have to change planes in Cairo) and by UK's own charter airlines, catering mostly to the groups doing the Nile Cruise. Some airlines you can check are Thomas Cook, Thompson Fly, etc.
To Keep in Mind:
If you are doing the Nile cruise, charter airlines work out cheaper as you don't really need flexibility in dates. If you're exploring the area and are, at least to an extent, on your own you may find that there is no direct return flight on the day you want organised by the charter flight, so make sure you check Egypt Air as well.

We went ot Luxor as independent travellers. Flights from Cairo-Luxor are cheap. The plane we flew on was brand new.
Be warned that Cairo airport is a maze and make sure you have a copy of flight details, if you can get actual tickets this will be a bonus. We had an expedia e-ticket and trying to get them to validate this i the office was a task. I had the distinct impression that they were trying to con me. If in doubt kick up a stink and they will just want to get rid of you.
Dispite the usual backhander attitude (dont be put off by this its just they way of things) the flights are excellent. I would def fly Egyptair again.

One way to get to/from Luxor is by plane. EgyptAir fly from Luxor to Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel (to name a few places).
Once our Nile Cruise ended, we flew from Luxor to Cairo, which took around 40 minutes.
However, expect delays when you travel in Egypt.......
Our early morning flight was delayed due to smog in Cairo - the airport there was shut.....but the pilot didn't find this out until we had taxied out to the runway. We then turned back, and sat on the tarmac for over 4 hours!!
We were unable to leave the plane, as the small terminal building was filled with passengers waiting to depart on other flights... what fun!

Well, the 8th day of our tour was coming to a close, and boy was I tired! I had already left the cruise ship, and toured the city all evening... all I wanted to do was SLEEP!
And sleep I did, since it took almost 2 hours to wait for the buses to take us from the terminal to the plane!

Everybody must go on a Nile cruise. We didn't book to go on this boat until we got to Luxor but our hotel arranged it for us once we were there. We travelled from Luxor to Aswan and it is the best way to see the temples and sights South of Luxor. The experience was quite surreal and I kept having to pinch myself to remind me I was really there - cruising on the Nile. Unfortunately the tourist industry in Egypt is suffering and there were only 50 or so people on our boat even though there was room for at least 200. Still, that meant there was more space in the pool etc.

Take the First Class train. This is just as quick (approx. 10hrs) as the Sleeper Train and a lot cheaper (EGP60 oneway). Buy your ticket at least a day in advance if you can. The guy at the ticket window takes his time and doesn't care if you're in a hurry to catch the train... The 1st Cls train has comfy, reclinable seats that can even be swiveled to sit opposite each other (e.g. if you're a group of 4). Bring a sweater or cardigan; the aircon can make it quite chilly.

See "Between Luxor and Cairo" for info about the First Class Train. The train ride between Luxor and Aswan takes about 3hrs and tickets are EGP30 oneway.

A bit prosaic for my first tip on Luxor, but transportation is a necessity of life to a traveller;))
So, there are not many railway links in Egypt, but Luxor is right on the principle one, linking Cairo and Aswan. Trains are quite comfortable and though this trip is more expensive than by taking the bus, it's
confiderably safer, both in terms of accidents (though a terrible one happened in 2002) and in terms of terrorism.

The best way to get around Luxor in winter is by bike. These can be hired from most hotels, or from one of the many hire shops.
Whenever you leave your bike you can be sure someone will be there to look after it. Please remember to give them a small tip.
Luxor itself is flat and all sites are within a short ride of the centre.
For the monuments on the West Bank take your bike across the Nile on the local ferry from opposite Luxor temple.
You can't get lost - just head directly away from the river and you'll soon be at the Colossi of Memnon.
About 400m further up the road is the ticket office where you can buy tickets for all the sites.
The Valley of the Kings is a long uphill ride, but it's fairly gentle. Coming back is fun!
There's no need to return from the Valley of the King's by the same road. It's much shorter, easier and more interesting to carry straight on past the Temple of Set I.

Q: Hi, Does anyone know the best (and most reputable) company that provides hot air balloon rides in Luxor at a reasonable price?...
