Wander around the market area and pop into the real local cafes (I must admit I never saw a female in there so...) or buy cooked chicken etc from stalls. Leave a Comment

More like a cafeteria than a pub, but with friendly staff and good (local) food! Leave a Comment

As the name already suggests, this is a 'genuine' English pub. The interior, the atmosphere.... The only differences are the local staff (who are very friendly, by the way) and the local -and lovely- food. Nice to have dinner first and hang around for a few drinks afterwards...! I live in Luxor, where good restaurants are in short supply as they are throughout Egypt. This newly opened small Italian restaurant takes some finding, although the taxi drivers usually know where it is, and can get directions on the phone, but it is really worth the effort. It was recommended to me by a friend, and I now eat there at least once a week. What a difference from the bland and tasteless offerings from most other places I have eaten at. The chef, a young Englishman, is dedicated to his work, and even makes his own pasta - not easy to do in Egypt, where ingredients are hard to source. Not expensive and my only regret is that I have to cross the Nile to get to it.
What makes this place especially different is the delicious pudding menu, and the lemon possett is the best I have ever eaten. Not an extensive menu, in keeping with the owners determination to offer only the best, and the food on offer does change frequently. Turn right into Medina Street, and then take the next left. Keep left for 150 yards, and the restaurant is on the right.

Follow the guide books to the two alcohol free restaurants next door to each other. the owners compete for business, the menus are the same but one seems to get more customers (probaly due to coloured lights). Leave a Comment

We went here after reading favourable reviews on this site. We had an evening meal sitting outside. The place looks clean and pretty and the waiters were friendy and attentive (2 young female travellers-possibly too attentive?!) but the food was of poor quality and much too fatty. I had the pigeon- no meat and all rice and the head was still attached (a bit off-putting). My friend had the mixed grill, which was all fat and bone and very little meat. Maybe lunchtimes are better but we were really disappointed.
The fresh lemon juice is nice and refreshing. Sorry, just can't recommend anything else. Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: On the riversideDirections: Opposite the Winter Palace. Follow the signs.

We are regular visitors to Luxor and only found this lovely restaurant in April this year. It is in Karnak, just a 2 minute walk from the Hilton and a lovely 15 minute walk from the Sofitel Karnak. If we were staying in the town we would still have gone up to Karnak to eat every night , we can't believe we never saw it before. The food is absolutely fantastic. Large portions, very tasty and the staff are so friendly. I always say, never go to Luxor for the food as it all tastes pretty similar wherever you go but we had night after night of really tasty meals. My favourite was Moussaka, my husband raved about the liver, cooked the german way with apple and their stroganoff, however all of the german dishes were divine. Gerda and Wael are the hosts and the food is excellently cooked by Waels brothers. We never had a dish that we would not have been happy to have eaten again. The restaurant is decorated in a cooling green and it is very clean with an excellent toilet. I would highly recommend anyone to eat here as there is no where else in the whole of Luxor that cooks everything as fresh and makes their food so tasty.

With couple of kids to feed, but you don’t want to compromise, the Luxor Hilton is a godsend. You absolutely know what you’re getting at a Hilton which can be a relief in this part of the world. They had a good choice of kid-friendly meals and something a bit more grown up for the rest of us: some local dishes, some typical American fare and some more unusual items for Luxor such as scallops - and beef carpaccio! I can wholeheartedly recommend the red snapper with olive tapenade, delicious. It’s a great spot to watch the sailboats going past and enjoy more than a few moments of calm.
Red snapper with olive tapenade - so fresh tasting, just what you want in the heat.
