Lovely cafe upstairs. Great ambience with old furniture and decor. Friendly service. A bit out of the main town but well worth it - we went there both days we were in Luxor.

Favorite Dish: We tried the mezze - don't miss the felafel. But all wonderful.

The Africa Restaurant
1 more image

I hope I'm going to make myself clear - its difficult.
The Africa restaurant has moved after a management disagreement.
What was the Africa restaurant is now called the African Gardens Restaurant.
The Africa restaurant is now just round the corner up on the main road.
The African Gardens has a good menu with lots of fresh local foods and ingredients. Just a pity that the standards have fallen. The gents toilet seats are only loosely connected to the toilets, sit with care. The door lock on the toilet I used was loosely held on with a couple of very long nails and needs to used with care. There are only handwash basins in the ladies, the gents have to make do with 3 sets of taps with a marble shelf underneath them - no sinks.
The Africa restaurant, just round the corner, has maintained the old standards.

Favorite Dish: Both places serve good authentic Egyptian food.
Check out the deep fried aubergines, oriental salad, tahina and baba ganough.

Wall hangings in the restaurant

Let's face it you don't go to Luxor for the food but we did want to try a restaurant that at least served Egyptian style cooking in a characteristically Egyptian setting.
We managed to find Sofra, an Egyptian style restaurant, a few streets back from the Corniche but clearly away from the main tourist centre. Walking to the restaurant was in itself an experience; here were the open-fronted shops selling their wares - the smells and smoke, the dirt road and the bustle almost of a marketplace. More significantly, not once were we hassled in these back streets.
Sofra's main feature is that you eat upstairs on an open terrace - though when we were there they had blinds down and nice wall hangings up. We sat around a low round table and the place certainly had an authentic feel about it.
The food was OK - all Egyptian and most definitely not 'international'; tasty, filling and quite a wide selection including something for my vegetarian son. I think we felt the food was pleasant but possibly didn't live up to our expectations given that the setting seemed so genuinely authentic.
The toilets were fantastic - very old fashioned but spotlessly clean with real towels, old fashioned taps and different soaps.

It was a really pleasant, authentically Egyptian evening and not too expensive. Try it for yourself.

Gerda's Garden: If you want tasty and fresh food

We are regular visitors to Luxor and only found this lovely restaurant in April this year. It is in Karnak, just a 2 minute walk from the Hilton and a lovely 15 minute walk from the Sofitel Karnak. If we were staying in the town we would still have gone up to Karnak to eat every night , we can't believe we never saw it before. The food is absolutely fantastic. Large portions, very tasty and the staff are so friendly. I always say, never go to Luxor for the food as it all tastes pretty similar wherever you go but we had night after night of really tasty meals. My favourite was Moussaka, my husband raved about the liver, cooked the german way with apple and their stroganoff, however all of the german dishes were divine.

Gerda and Wael are the hosts and the food is excellently cooked by Waels brothers. We never had a dish that we would not have been happy to have eaten again. The restaurant is decorated in a cooling green and it is very clean with an excellent toilet.

I would highly recommend anyone to eat here as there is no where else in the whole of Luxor that cooks everything as fresh and makes their food so tasty.

Favorite Dish: Moussaka, really tasty, German Liver and Apples fabulous

Hilton Luxor Resort: Go before it gets too busy!

With couple of kids to feed, but you don’t want to compromise, the Luxor Hilton is a godsend. You absolutely know what you’re getting at a Hilton which can be a relief in this part of the world. They had a good choice of kid-friendly meals and something a bit more grown up for the rest of us: some local dishes, some typical American fare and some more unusual items for Luxor such as scallops - and beef carpaccio! I can wholeheartedly recommend the red snapper with olive tapenade, delicious. It’s a great spot to watch the sailboats going past and enjoy more than a few moments of calm.

Favorite Dish: Red snapper with olive tapenade - so fresh tasting, just what you want in the heat.

The Lantern: Great food at the LANTERN

I went to the restaurant after reading many reviews about it from other members, and they did a great job really. That was one fine dining restaurant with yummy food and a cozy ambiance. So easy to find the place, the owner is a British lady who is very nice and welcoming, the food tastes great and a lot of options to choose from and very good prices too. I totally recommend it for anyone going to Luxor, I'd definitely go back if I go to Luxor again.

Favorite Dish: most of the dishes we tried were tasteful, the spaghetti bolognese , the lentil soup is super delicious and the lemon chicken, escalope chicken, and the mixed grill platter. Also the desserts were very nice.

Various restaurants and bars: Restaurants and bars in Luxor June 2008

Sheraton Hotel : "La Mamma" Italian Jules had salmon and lemon starter 1/10 lets just say the salmon was “well traveled” and veal as main 9/10 I had lentil soup (more like tomato) 5/10 and for main, pepper steak 6/10 price comparable with UK (not cheap by Egyptian standards)
Sheraton hotel main restaurant breakfast buffet : (included on B+B) typical continental style buffet breakfast 6/10 acceptable but would not have liked to have paid for it!
Sheraton hotel Indian restaurant did not eat as prices too high (example pilau rice LE40 approx£4 and most curries e.g. jalfrezi LE125 approx £12.50)
Sheraton hotel main restaurant dinner buffet : food again ok limited choice of meat. chicken or wait for the one chef to individually prepare cook slices of beef (queues formed for this service) and expensive approx £15 per head without beer, the local beer incidentally was the most expensive we found in Luxor locally produced (not the Belgium variety) Stella 4.5% alc by vol @ LE30 Egyptian approx £3-00 for 500ml bottle and local Sakara beer at LE35 approx £3-50 for 500ml.

Maximes Restaurant (5mins walk into town from Sheraton) Egyptian restaurant well presented in upstairs triangular shaped room food good and reasonably priced (no alcohol).

The Two Johns at the Gaddis Hotel Khaled Bin El-Walid Street : This bar and restaurant entered through Gaddis hotel head strait through from the front of hotel and then upstairs at the back of the hotel, clean and cool bar but not a great deal of atmosphere, but at the time we visited we were the only customers (approx 7-00pm) Stella LE10 we did not eat.

Murphy’s Irish bar side street adjacent to the Steigenberger Nile Palace Khaled Bin El-Walid Street, imposing front entrance in non-impressive side street. Bar decent inside, looked like disco and bar downstairs and a restaurant and bar upstairs with pool table. Stella LE10 did not eat but food prices seemed reasonable (like most restaurants visited in Luxor the menu was not very adventurous!)

Ali Baba Bar and Grill (open air) probably one of the best views in Luxor situated behind Luxor temple past the ubiquitous McDonalds, heading south, totally Egyptian? and sort of tatty around the edges (and in the middle for that matter) But spoke English, bar not very cool on a hot June day, beer not particularly cold but cheap as anywhere LE10 food was served but we did not eat. Definitely recommended for authenticity and spectacular view. (warning as with some bars in Luxor the entrance is usually by an uninviting hallway and passage, this one seems designed to trip the unwary, as the entrance to this upstairs bar is by rickety stairs with a carpet that does not seem to be attached anywhere! Be warned!)

7 Days 7 Ways Restaurant and Royal Oak "pub" English managed restaurant 5mins walk from Sheraton hotel. Highly recommended and Best food value/quality/service we experienced while in Luxor. Stella LE10 bottle of Egyptian wine LE75 approx £7 we ate here twice whilst in Luxor and the food and value where the best we had! Again the entrance is though a narrow hallway situated between shops an could easily be missed it does have a sign above the doorway for 7 days 7 ways and Royal Oak pub which is in the same building on the floor above and is run by the same people with the same cleanliness and value for money!

Mercure Hotel Cornish El Nile Street, this was only hostelry we managed to visit the previous time we where in Luxor 3 years earlier Highly recommend the eastern style mixed grill which comes on its own charcoal burner at the LE CHAMPOLION Restaurant, which although unusually positioned in the foyer area, it serves excellent food with a friendly smile, Also recommended is the EL SARAB BAR bar located to the right as you enter the hotel which has a happy hour? sic! between 5pm and 7pm but rather unusually its pay full price for the first drink??????

There is a band playing as you arrive to welcome you, but the spirit of the whole thing is slightly tainted as they request tips as soon as you walk past. This is not unlike any other area in Egypt as the residents make most of their living off of tourism. We had pigeon while we were there. It was greasy and had black/brown spots on it, but the skin was cooked well (crispy and flavorful).

Favorite Dish: They had outstanding fruit and pita bread. The pita bread is made fresh on site (see picture).
