McDonald's: A sight for sore eyes!

Familiar food choices!

There was a wonderful thing that happened to us after we left the Luxor Palace... a McDonald's! After eating many different types of Egyptian food, it was wonderful to taste a hamburger and fries...

(Just to clarify... I love trying new cultures and new foods...and we did for 8 days... and they were all great, but sometimes you want something you are accustomed to!)

This was the second best Big Mac I have ever tasted, behind the McDonald's in Prague!

Favorite Dish: Big Mac, French fries, and a large Coke!

It's beautiful to have lunch and view on Nile at the same time. This is restaurant in which we had our launch.

Favorite Dish: Buffet. I had some vegetables and chicken meat. Salads buffet is great! We had a lunch included in our price for Luxor trip so I don't know prices. Sorry. :(

Tutankhamun Restaurant: Famous Chef

The Tutankhanmun Restaurant is at the West Bank of Luxor. Turn left when you landed on the ferry dock. It is about 2 minutes walk. The restaurant is on the roof terrace of a two-storey low-rise. You can have a stunning view of the Luxor Temple, and watching the felucca glided along the Nile. The food is basically Egyptian. The chicken curry is a must try - not too spicy with a tint of sweentness because of the frunits added into it. The most fabulous thing is that there are three side dishes (let alone the bread and salad), potates, spinach and something of a mixed vegetable. Rosemary chicken is also highly recommended. We had just ordered two main courses and the food was so good that we finished them all and ended up with a big big stomach. The mint tea was also excellent. The whole meal costed only EP60! What a bargain! The Chef, Mammould, had served a French expedition team and also worked for several 5-star French hotels, such as Isis Hotel and Le Meridien. Mammould speaks fluent French and English, and is a very friendly man. He is renovating the second floor to turn it into a B&B. He showed us around, where the kitchen would be, how the bathroom looked like. Friendly man!

Favorite Dish: The chicken curry is my favourite. Slightly different from those Indian curry I used to have, Mammould's curry has a sweet flavour, with some shredded coconut on the top. The fresh fruit adds a delightful taste in the curry. Excellent to go with the flavoured rice.

Follow the guide books to the two alcohol free restaurants next door to each other. the owners compete for business, the menus are the same but one seems to get more customers (probaly due to coloured lights).

Restaurant "ANUBIS": Lunch on the Nile bank

"Anubis" Terrace Restaurant is on the east bank of the Nile River. We had a lunch included in our price for Luxor trip.

Favorite Dish: Buffet was served. Between all those meals I took chicken nuggets. They were really fantastic. Rise with saffron with it was great. And a beer too, of course.

El Kababgy: Go for the Duck!!

El Kababgy

El Kababgy is a fairly new cafe/restaurant on the bank of the river nile on Luxors East Bank. It is directly opposite the Winter Palace so very easy to find. I believe it is owned by the same family that own the Tutotel and the Metropolitan Cafe/Bakery further down the river.

This restaurant is excellent, it is spotlessly clean both in the restaurant and the kitchens which you can see from outside. You can choose to either sit outside by the Nile or inside the restaurant itself which is decorated nicely and has a nice modern feel to it.

The menu is slightly more adventerous that many of the other small restaurants in Luxor with the added bonus of having a Nile view. There is a grilled section where you can choose from Grilled Chicken, Mixed Grill, Lamb Cutlets, Pigeon, livers and much more. There is a nice selection of soups, burgers and sandwiches as well as pastas and pizzas. The also have a wide selection of traditional Tagines as well as lots of vegetarian dishes I had the Duck with Orange sauce with Oriental rice and I can only describe it as totally delicious. Adel had the Mixed Grill and this looked delicious also. The chef cooks the koftas on a BBQ outside so the smell drifts across which really gets your appetite going. The staff are nice and friendly too.
This is also a great place for a coffee and to enjoy the view if you don't fancy eating.

One good sign is that the toilets are probably one of the cleanest in Luxor and a man checks them frequently to ensure they are clean. Only downside is that the toilet door has a huge mirror - on the inside which is just a bit off putting to say the least.

We visited El Kababgy for a special lunch but it would be interesting to see what the atmosphere is like in the evening. The music they play there is pretty good also, they alternate between Egyptian/Arab music and Western music.

Overall, highly recommended!!!

Favorite Dish: Duck with Orange Sauce - absolutely huge!

The Cosmopolitan: Great setting for a beer

The Cosmopolitan is a small cafe right on the Corniche with views straight over the River Nile to the West Bank.
Food is limited, mainly snacks, but excellently served and very tasty. Beer is the cheapest in Luxor, at only 6LE for a Stella Local (July 03)
A perfect place for a beer while watching the sunset.

Favorite Dish: No favourite dish, I just go there for beer or coffee.

The Bistro: Cheap and tasty

The Bistro is a small restaurant serving delicious meals cooked to order. It stands on a very busy street corner, and is a great place to watch Luxor life pass by. If you like people watching, this is the place to do it.
No alcohol though.

Favorite Dish: Try the Mixed Livers...... to die for, and the beef strogonoff is excellent, although I am not sure exactly why they call it that.
The tahina salad is the best I have ever had.

Anubis: eat on the Nile

This restaurant is directly next to the Nile and near the Mummification Museum. The food is good but unadventurous, and as it's supposed to be the most expensive in Luxor at about £5 a head it seems really cheap to me. It's also licenced and the white wine in a bucket of ice feels decadent. Well worth a try and recommended by photograph.
