Valley of the Kings: Valley Of The Kings
  • Tip Rating:
  • For around 500 years, some of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs were buried in tombs in the Valley of the Kings. There are 21 tombs in the Valley of the Kings of pharaohs who reigned during the 18th - 20th dynasties. Previous pharaohs had been buried in pyramids which proved too easy to rob. Theban pharaohs believed that their future life depended on keeping their mummies and goods intact, therefore, tombs were built into rock. Despite all security precautions, all the royal tombs except one were emptied of their goods during the centuries. It is still possible to see all of the beautiful hieroglyphics and paintings in the tombs illustrating the afterlife.
You can reach the Valley of the Kings, either by taxi, as we did, or by hiring your own bike or on a tour. Tickets can be purchased either at the ticket office near the Colossi of Memnon, not far from the ferry dock, or there is a ticket office close to the entrance to the Valley of the Kings.
Important: all prices for sights went up since beginning of November 2004, so many other VT pages prices will now be too low. It now costs 55 LE (5.50GBP) to see 3 tombs, excluding the tomb of Tutankhamun, which is purchased separately, just before entry to the Valley.

    Ramesseum: Ramesseum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although this temple, built by Ramses II, is in ruins, it is still very beautiful and has the Valley of the Nobles as a back drop. As tourists are so busy visiting the Valley of the Kings, they often miss this temple, so you are free to walk around without the crowds. Originally there was a 16 m high bust of Ramses, standing in front of the south quay of pylon II, however, you can now see this lying on the ground.
Entrance fee: 20 LE (2 GBP)

Valley of the Kings: Visit the tombs in the Valley of the Kings
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although not all the tombs are always open to visitors, the more interesting ones usually are.

We visited three tombs, Ramses IX (KV6 - 20th Dynasty), Merenptah (KV8) and Ramses IV (KV2 - 20th Dynasty) assigned by the ticketing office according to the number of visitors.

The tombs are electrically lighted and give a more impressive image, exposing more of the artistic detail.

    Lotsa shouting and throwing
    around

That was exactly what i heard the minute i stepped into the sundeck. I was looking around, very bewilded. Was that shouting for me?

Before i knew, this plastic bag hit me, luckily not my head, it hit my arm and i panicked!! I grabbed it clumsily with all my might, like an octopus and prayed that this bag and me would not fall from the ship and into the waters!!!

I looked down..there they were, Nile River Mobile Merchants. That's the name i gave them. They wore jackets with registration numbers and they belted out mushy endearments just to capture your attention. Once they did, they threw things at u! Kkeee, you can find rugs, egyptian clothes for your Galebaya night or towels.

Of course bargaining is part of the FUN!!! Pretend to throw back the bag if the prices dun meet your fancy! =PPP

It's fun if you bargain as a group. These river merchants are great at begging you to listen to their best offers.

When the price is settle, they would throw you another bag and you just put your money in and aim it at them.

We spent the whole evening doing that!!! =)) I hope you'll enjoy as much as i do.

    Luxor Temple Colonnade
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is the colonnade which consists of two lines of columns (16 m) in the court yard of Ramesses II (the size 57m x 51m). Their capitals are executed in the form of buds of a lotus - a symbol of Egypt. The walls of the court yard are strongly destroyed and decorated by bas-reliefs.

The spacious court yard of Amenhotep III (the size is 50m x 45m) is the next part of the temple. Originally it has been framed from three sides by two lines of columns. Columns on both sides of the court yard are kept till now. Their capitals are executed in the form of buds of a lotus.

You may find more detailed information here.

  • Karnak Temple is HUGE! It's the biggest temple we visited while we were in Egypt. Unfortuantely we didn't get a lot of time to explore it on our own but I'm sure you could spend hours looking around if you had the time. There are some amazing statues and carvings etc!

It costed 40 LE to get into the Karnak Temple.

The Souks or Market: Luxor Bazaar
  • Tip Rating:
  • We really enjoyed looking through the markets in Luxor...the people seemed a lot nicer than those in Aswan and they really had a sense of humour. ;) One guy offered my new husband 10 million camels for me, another offered his shop!!! We loved looking through the various things for sale...clothes, statues, jewellery boxes, sheesha pipes, postcards, jewellery, shoes etc.

Never pay the first price offered...you can usually get them down to about 30 - 40% of the first price. Just walk away if the price isn't good enough and they will chase you almost every time. ;)

    Karnak Temple: The hypostyle hall
  • Tip Rating:
  • The hypostyle hall is between the second and third pylons. Built by Seti I and Ramses II, it consists of 134 sandstone columns in 16 rows to support the roof. The 12 columns of the central "nave" are almost 22 m high and 3.5 m in diameter. The columns along the sides are about 13 m high. Stone lattice windows rest on the architraves, providing the only light source in the hall.
