Felucca sailing up the Nile for several days is another definite must for all Egypt travelers. It will give a sense of peace (except during the rare passing of mechanized tour boats plying the river), a sense of adventure (during the times when you'd think the sail is about to turn over), and a sense of fulfillment (having done the deed.) It's also relaxing, forcing you to abandon just for a few days the sometimes irritating necessities of the modern world. You'll see the Nile River the way it's supposed to be seen, with the sun/moon reflecting on the waters. Pray for a windy day though; otherwise, your navigators would be hard pressed to row the felucca and it'll be less fun. Felucca sailing is a roughing it kind of a trip. The waters of the Nile River (reputed to cause severe stomach ailments) is used to wash the fruits to eat, vegetables and meat to cook, and the cooking utensils and pans which will all be reused the following meal/day. You'll also be sleeping on the sail's wooden structure. Finally, your toilet is a "made-it-yourself," and modesty is not guaranteed. It's better to arrange for a felucca trip for a group. It's cheaper that way and a lot more fun. The per person cost (there were eleven of us) was EGP 150 and includes the meal prepared by the navigators. Drinks are extra and cost EGP 5 each (non-alcoholic).
