Karnak Temple: Temple of Seti II and Great Court

    Great Court--Southside
    Colonnade

Just inside the 1st Pylon to the right is a rather small relatively unimpressed row of three temples to the Gods Mut, Amon, and Khons. From the roof of Khons, if the stairs are still open, one can get a great shot of the Great Court. Colonnades line the south and north sides of the court, but the most distinctive feature of the Great Court may be the sole remaining column of the Kiosk of Taharqa, which had been built by the 25th dynasty Ethiopian Pharoah, Taharqa.

In the Hall of Records behind the ruined sixth pylon, there are two pink granite pillars with relief carvings representing Upper and Lower Egypt (lotus for Upper and papyrus for Lower Egypt).

Obelisk of queen Hatshepsut. It was made of Aswan pink granite with the apex once covered with an alloy of silver and gold but it was all taken down when old egyptians decide to destroy everything that remaind from great queen Hatshepsut.

    Karnak Temple: Hidden Love
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ramesses II is one of the greatest farao's of ancient Egypt.
And he knew that. He wasn't modest. He thought of himself as a god and demanded to be worshipped as a god. In Upper Egypt he got that chance. His greatest tempels were built there: Abu Simbel!!

He tried to do that in Thebes (Luxor). In Karnak Tempel. But the priest cast was to mighty, even for Ramesses II. They were pleased with the Great Hypostyle hall of 134 collumns. That added to the granduer of the Tempel. They werent pleased with this image.
It showes Amun-Ra and Mut in an affectionate position. Gods are never showed in an affectionate position. This is a picture of Ramesses II and Nefertari, portrayed as Amun-Ra and Mut. A direct challenge to the mighty priests of Karnak!

This image was an offence!! They couldn't remove it becouse it was an image of a god. But they could hide it! And it was covered. By presumably a gold plate. You can still see the holes of the nailes that held the plate.
    Take a good look!!

    Karnak Temple: Karnak temple amazes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Karnak temple was my favorite temple in all of Egypt it was clean well perserved and made you feel tiny next to the monumental hieght of the buildings and statues. We walked around this temple for hours and it never ceased to amaze the architecture and sheer scale upon which it was built will blow your mind.

    Karnak Temple: KARNAK TEMPLE 1
  • Tip Rating:
  • Karnak was the old capital of Thebes. The temple was built about 3500 years ago, the columns can tell that with their capitals shaped as open papyrus plants and closed lotus flowers.

    Karnak Temple: Ram-headed sphinxes
  • Tip Rating:
  • An avenue of ram-headed sphinxes leads the visitor towards the Temple of Karnak.

The sphinxes were fantastic beasts with the body of a lion and the head of a ram, and they symbolizes the god Amun.
