  • I think it is the most elegant part of the whole temple. The hypostyle Hall made of 32 beautiful columns, placed on the southern side leads to inside section of the yemple. The eastern part of the coutyard is best preserved, some original paint can be see there.

  • Next to the Court of RamsesII is the Colonade of Amenothep III. It consists 14 huge papyrus columns. This Court was completed during the rule of Tutankhamun. The great relief scenes of Opat proccesion can be found in its east and west walls.

Luxor Temple: The Court of Ramses II
The Court of Ramses II is situated beyond the first pylon. It is beilived that originaly it was the forecourt of Amenhotep's III building. The colonade around its each side is the main feature of this court. Inbetween each column the colosal statues were placed. It is presumed that many of those statues also belonged to Amenhotep III.

  • The Entrance pylon as well as the statues and obelisk were made by Ramesses II. The colossal seating statues represent Ramesses II himself. There were two obelisks that stood here as a pair but the missing one is now in Paris. The obelisk is decorated with a famous battle poem and the battle scenes of the Pharaoh.

A different style from Karnak temple and the columns are smaller, however, Luxor temple is still impressive! The avenue of the sphynx's is great stuff! Also look out for the carvings in certain area, can't remember where, sorry, but this guy must have been the 'justin Trousersnake' of his era!! apparently he wanted to boast of his prowess as a lover, so every carving depicts him with a rather large 3rd leg!!

Added by Ramses II (19th Dynasty) around 1270-1250 BC, the First Pylon speaks to the grandeur of the reign of the Pharaoh. The imposing structure is carved with sunken reliefs - now somewhat difficult to discern - describing the Pharaoh's successes in the famous Battle of Qadesh in Syria against the Hittites. The much reproduced image of Ramses II, with a bow and arrow riding a horse-drawn chariot, is depicted on the façade, along with masses of losing Hittite enemy warriors. In addition to the two obelisks placed in front, six colossal statues of the Pharaoh (four seated and two standing) guarded the First Pylon. Only one of the standing statues remains in place, while two seated colossi continue to flank the grand entrance to this day.

    Luxor Temple: Luxor Temple
Although it is no Temple of Karnak, the Luxor Temple is very impressive. The temple was dedicated to the Theban Triad of Ammon, Mut, and Khonshu and was, during the New Kingdom, the focus of the annual Opet Festival, in which a cult statue of Ammon was paraded down the Nile from Karnak Temple which it connected to by the Avenue of Sphinxs.

The temple begins with the 24-metre high First Pylon, built by Ramses II. The pylon was decorated with scenes of Ramses's military triumphs (This main entrance to the temple complex was originally flanked by six colossal statues of the Ramses but only two seated have survived. The 25-metre tall obelisk is one of a matching pair of which the other one sits in Place de la Concorde in Paris.

Inside the courtyard, also built by Ramses II, has seen the Abu Haggag mosque built. After the courtyard comes the processional colonnade built by Amenhotep III – a 100-metre corridor lined by 14 columns. Friezes on the wall describe the stages in the Opet Festival. Interestingly there are Roman stuccoes than can still be seen atop the Egyptian carvings inside the temple. In Roman times this area served as a chapel, where local Christians were offered a final opportunity to renounce their faith and embrace the state religion. Moving further in stands a Barque Shrine for use by Ammon, built by Alexander.

As the Roman Empire embraced Christianity, the Temple of Luxor had already been converted into a fort and enclosed within outer walls. Several churches were subsequently built inside the enlarged complex, one of which is said to exist underneath the Mosque of Abu el-Haggag. Other churches lie in ruins outside the Temple, with some columns partially reconstructed in recent times. Also scattered around the complex are many fallen stone blocks showing Byzantine-period crosses and Egyptian hieroglyphs lying side-by-side (see attached photos).

By the 3rd century AD, as its importance declined under the Romans, the Temple of Luxor was converted into a castrum (Roman fort) to defend the Empire's southern frontier (Limes Romanus) near Aswan. Fortified walls were constructed around the Temple using some of its own stones, including one of the Colossi of Ramses II (!), while the inner temple was converted into a sanctuary to the glory of Rome. Parts of the Roman wall are now exposed and partially restored (see attached photo). Interestingly, the word castrum probably has the same origin as the Arabic word qasr (palace or castle) from which the name Luxor or al-Uqsur, was derived.

Luxor Temple: Where humans met the sky...
Columns, hieroglyphs, even colors are really in an ancient Egypt state. When you enter the temple, you feel like you're back to the past, becoming a pharao or an egyptian builder !
If you're into Egyptian stuff, don't hesitate a seconde ! Take the plane and enjoy !! It's been 2 years and a half (2004) for me and I want to go back !
PS:Don't forget to go durng winter time in Egypt, there it's so hot and dry !
