  • The Luxor temple is also called “South Harem of Amon” by the Egyptians and was almost entirely built by Amenophis III, enlarged by Thutmosis III and finished by Ramses II. In front of the entrance (the Great Pylon of Ramses II ) are two seated colossi of Ramses II with the remains of 4 standing ones. This temple is a site where 3 civilizations and religions meet, the Egyptian, the Roman and the Islamic one. There is a Muslim church incorporated into the walls of the temple since it was built at times when the rest of the temple was covered by sand and people couldn’t have guessed its existance. There is also a part of the temple built by Alexander the Great and encapsulating the Roman times.

Luxor Temple: An avenue of Sphinxes
  • Tip Rating:
  • An avenue (over 3 km) of human headed sphinxes once connected the temples of Karnak and Luxor. This avenue was used once a year in a festival during which the image of Amon, Mut and Khonsu travelled from the Temple of Karnak to the Temple of Luxor. Nowadays you can see only a small part of this avenue - near the Temple of Luxor and near the Temple of Karnak. Here the sphinxes are better survived, but in some places in Luxor you can see some parts of avenue, too. But those parts were not survived very well. And, of course, the biggest part of the avenue are under ground.

  • Luxor Temple is an accretion of structures erected by succeeding kings. The principal entrance today is the Pylon of Ramses II (c.1279-1213 B.C.E.), which is flanked by two seated statues of the king (one is behind the obelisk) and one standing statue (of an original four). The remaining obelisk of pink granite is situated in front of the eastern most seated statue. The western obelisk was a present to France and stands at the Place de la Concorde in Paris since 1836.

  • Luxor has often been called the worlds greatest open air museum, as indeed it is and much more. The number and preservation of the monuments in the Luxor area are unparalleled anywhere else in the world that know of. Actually, what most people think of as Luxor is really three different areas, consisting of the City of Luxor on the East side of the Nile, the town of Karnak just north of Luxor and Thebes, which the ancient Egyptians called Waset, which is on the west side of the Nile across from Luxor.

  • Louxor temple was our first destination while arrived in Egypt. By sunset/ nightfall, the temple is just amazing, with its Avenue of Sphinxes connecting to Karnak temple, three statues of Ramses II standing right in front of the entrance, the obelisk pair of the one in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Here's me & my best friend, Daria.

  • The Luxor temple has a very nice location at the banks of the Nile in the centre of Luxor. From the Corniche you can see how nowadays Luxor is built on a higher level than the temple. The Luxor Temple is built during the New Kingdom by Amenophis III. Also this temple is an example, how the temple expanded from the back to the front side. Ramses II built later the first great court and the first Pylon. Temple is open from 6am to 9 pm. Entry is 20 Egyptian pound. We visited the temple in the evening ( beautifull light and not so hot)

    Luxor Temple: Sanctuary
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the walls of the Sanctuary you can see the pharaonic scenes of sacrifices and offerings to the gods. In reality we spent here more than one hour. These scenes on the Sanctuary's walls were so interesting!!! And another thing that i like - there weren't so many people as in the Temple of Karnak.

  • The Luxor Temple was dedicated to the Theban Triad of Amun-Re, his wife Mut, and his son Khonsu. It was called "Ipet resyt," which means the Southern Opet or the Place of the Seclusion of Amun-Re. It was directly connected to the temple of Karnak, the main cult center of Amun-Re or Amun-Min, the sky god or the ithyphallic fertility god. On the right side of the picture you will see the impressive mosque "Sufi Shaykh"(different religions meet in the temple of Luxor) - on the left the "sacred boat museum"

    Luxor Temple: Hieroglyphic
  • Tip Rating:
  • The reliefs on the walls of the hall bear the names of Tutankhamun, Horemheb, Seti I, Ramses II and Seti II. Tutankhamun decorated the eastern walls but Horemheb later erased the name of the youngest but most famous king, and inscribed his own.The glamour and cultural fall of succeeding kings
