    obelisk of luxor temple, located in front of the pylon with 25 metres high. actually there were 2 of obelisks standing here, but on of them carried away and placed at place de la concorde in paris [france] since 1833.

    The entrance is the pylon of Ramesses II which is flanked by two seated statues of the king, obelisk and one standing statue. The western obelisk has stood in the Concorde Square in Paris since 1836, when Mohamed Ali granted it to French after they granted him Clock Tower in Alabaster Mosque in Cairo.

    I love taking pictures from the bus. Usually when we see something the first time, it's from the bus or a car and the first impresion is the one that leads me further. I'll always remember how I felt when I took this picture and the temple simply appeared in front of me.

    As with so many of the temples and ruins, the quality and condition of the reliefs is extraordinary. Luxor Temple is full of reliefs (a higher concentration than any other temple we saw on the trip) referencing Nubia and African expeditions, highlighted by the lower figures in two of the pictures. The condition of the reliefs is due to the fact that the temple was buried for thousands of years beneath sand, silt followed by the more recent 'modern' day city of Luxor being built on top.

    Although Luxor is not as massive as Karnak, it is still quite impressive in structure and scale. It'll take about 1-1/2 to 2 hours of leisurely walking to finish sightseeing. I could give you a history lesson but you're better off getting a travel guide.

    It seems to me that wise plan for the city of Luxor would be to have the goal of clearing the buildings between Luxor Temple and Karnak. I can't recall if any large hotels are located along this route, but most hotels should be built along the esplanade anyway. The greater challenge would be removal of the 19th century mosque, which is no great shakes in terms of architecture but for the Muslim faithful might be hard to remove. Abu'll Haggag, a Sufi sheik that died in 1243, spent the last fifty of his ninety years in Luxor, but he would likely approve from the grave, the building of a new finer mosque elsewhere in town. In any case, Luxor already has street parade ceremonies that bear resemblance to the traditions of ancient Egypt. Expanding this to a festival that parades along the Avenue of the Sphinxes would be really fantastic. Another great website is provided as a link below.

    We didn't get to go inside Luxor Temple but we did have a look around from outside...we would have gone inside if we had more time. You can see a fair bit of the temple from the street but our friends who went inside said it was better up close...

    Passing through the pylon entrance, you will enter the court of Ramses II with numerous statues of the pharaoh and surrounding papyrus-type columns with lotus-bud capitals

    a large court of amon-ofis III and the round columns reflected papyrus flowers. then in between columns can be found several osirian pillars. further away are small chapels which were dedicated to the theban triads.

    These statues are found in the collonade of Amenophis III and are made of white limestone. They date back to the reign of Tutankhamun.
