Luxor Temple: Luxor Temple by Night
  • Tip Rating:

  • Luxor Temple is an easy walk, set right in the heart of Luxor - its in such a spectacular location. At Night the temple is lit up and looks so beautiful.
There is an entrance fee into the Luxor Temple which is well worth the fee, but if you are a bit short of cash rest assured that you can see a lot from the outside if you are feeling templed out!!

If you had visited the Temple at Karnak prior to going to the Temple of Luxor, then you'll find the latter easier to explore. Generally speaking, it's compact considering it possesses all the qualities of an ancient Egyptian temple: the Avenue of the Sphinxes, an obelisk (the other is now in Place de la Concorde), two seated statues of Ramses II, the first pylon, hypostyle halls, and several chambers. The temple doesn't have the colorful hieroglyphs you'll find in other sights but made up for it in other ways, such as its proximity to the Nile River and being comfortably situated in the center of the city. In fact, if you didn't want to enter the temple complex and pay another entrance fee, you can still enjoy it from the outside by simply circling the complex area.

The entrance fee is EGP 35 and photography is permitted.

  • The Luxor Temple was dedicated to the Holy Triad of Amun-Re, his wife Mut, and his son Khonsu ( like in christianity- the holy trinity). It was the place where the Opet festival was held. The festival would actualy started at Karnak Temple and countinued at Luxor Temple. That was the reason for the Avenue of Sphinxs to be built as it conected the two twmples.

Luxor Temple: The Temple of Luxor
  • Tip Rating:
  • Luxor Temple is smaller and more compact than Karnak. It was the capital of the 11-20 Dynasties.
At some time in the 19th Century a mosque of Abu el Haggag was built.
In Ancient Egyptian times there was a ceremony every year where the god was taken from Karnak to Luxor [or vice versa] in some sort of fertility ritual.

The colonnade is about 52 m long with two rows of 7 columns, about 16 m high, with capitals shaped like open lotus flowers. Tutankhamen had walls erected to complete the area but today these flanking walls are mostly collapsed.

  • Luxor temple is quite well preserved having been covered in sand with the village of Luxor built on top of it. The temple excavations began in 1885 when the removal of the sand and village revealed the hidden temple.

The people of Luxor wanted the mosque to be left intact when the archaeologists cleared the village. The mosque still plays a large part in the local life and maintains its tradition of worship as it has done for 3,000 years.

Luxor Temple: Mosque of Abu el Hagag
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Mosque of Abu el Hagag was built on the top of the Luxor temple long time ago. It remained on it's place after the temple was unburied. So strange to see-the mosque inside the ancient court of Ramses II. However, it gives the idea how deep the temple was buried untill the 19th century.
