Temple of Hatshepsut: Temple of Hatshepsut
The temple was built around 1478 to 1458 BC.

It is a mortuary temple or tomb for Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt's most famous female pharaoh.

Partly curved into the spectacular limestone cliff backdrop, the three-tiered Temple of Hatshepsut marks one of the earliest and most breathtaking unions of nature and architecture.

Temple of Hatshepsut: Impressive Mortuary Temple

This is a truly unique mortuary temple, the only one with ramps that were once lined with palm or date trees. Queen Hatshepsut intended for the complex to resemble a garden paradise with the temple at the core. If you have the time and some stamina, approach this temple from the Valley of the Kings by walking up the hill where it will lead to a bird's eye view of the temple from high above. Believe me, you'll be in amazement.

Now, once you reach the ground level there are this tacky Disneyworld-type trams that will take you closer to the ramp of the imposing complex. I can't remember if you can opt not to ride this or not. But with the heat of the sun bearing down on you, you'll most likely welcome these trams.

Aside from the overall effect the complex delivers, the statues of Hatshepsut in front, and a few exquisite decorations, there's not much else to see. Maybe that's because it was intentionally destroyed by Queen Hatshepsut's successors. Nearby are the ruins of Mentuhotep II's and Thutmosis III's mortuary temples.

    Temple of Hatshepsut: Hatshepsuts Temple
This is set in the side of the hill on the other side of the mountain from the Valley of the Kings, so it is often included in a trip there. We went on possibly the hottest day of the year so far (our guide told us it was 50 degrees C) and even though our taxi was air conditioned, you stop in the car park which is a LONG way from the temple and you have to walk there in the sun - take a bottle of water with you, you will need it! The climb feels about twice the distance it really is due to the heat, and you cant get refreshments in the temple, only at the bottom of the steps, and the price is outrageous because its in the middle of the desert and they have a monopoly at the temple!
Wear a hat too - you will need one - and consider dunking it in water as it evaporates and cools your head.
We were also taken to an alabaster mine. Dont be afraid to say no to buying there as the goods are poor quality compared to the airport and shops in town, and much dearer. They will try to pressure you into buying by offering cold drinks. We refused to buy and still got a cheery wave.

This magnificent temple complex is worth the journey. It is against a mountain in a stark and dramatic setting. The structure itself is on three levels. There are many representations of Queen Hatshpsut to see despite the fact that there was some effort later to destroy signs of her legacy. Note the statues that seem somewhat masculine even though they represent the queen. Stone carvings are abundant. Security here has been somewhat stepped up due to a terrorist attack in the early 1990's. Today, the temple flourishes once again as a major tourist destination. It is a striking example of Ancient Egypt.

Temple of Hatshepsut: Lost in the desert
This temple, lost in the desert and on the side of a cliff is really well preserved too. Less spectacular than Karnak, this temple also has wonderful hieroglyphs and statues.

Temple of Hatshepsut: Temple of Hatshepsut
We went to the temple after visiting the valley of the kings. Most of the people take the bus to go to the temple after visiting the valley but we went on a hike. The mountain between those to places seems to be quite high but it isn't that strenuous. The walk is about 2 hours and the view is just fantastic. The temple of hatshepsut itself is very nice and everybody who visits Luxor has to visit it.
