    One way to get to/from Luxor is by plane. EgyptAir fly from Luxor to Cairo, Aswan and Abu Simbel (to name a few places). Once our Nile Cruise ended, we flew from Luxor to Cairo, which took around 40 minutes. However, expect delays when you travel in Egypt....... Our early morning flight was delayed due to smog in Cairo - the airport there was shut.....but the pilot didn't find this out until we had taxied out to the runway. We then turned back, and sat on the tarmac for over 4 hours!! We were unable to leave the plane, as the small terminal building was filled with passengers waiting to depart on other flights... what fun!

    After a brief stay in Aswan, we sailed off into the sunset on a boat, for a 3 day Nile Cruise, which ended in Luxor. There are plenty of these cruise boats on the river, and the majority cruise from Luxor to Aswan, or vice versa. Our boat was called the "Nile Bride", and slept about 150 people. There was a restaurant, bar and a roof top with a pool and plenty of chairs to sit in the sun, relax and watch the banks for the Nile pass by. The staff were incredibly friendly and the whole experience was great - highly recommended!

    One of the best ways to see the most important sites in Upper Egypt (Southern Egypt), is by taking a Nile Cruise. Most of these ships are 5 star hotel type services. We sailed on the M/S Jasmin, and it was very nice. One of the ship's crew mentioned to me that there are over 500 ships sailing between Luxor and Aswan at any time.

    Due to the heavy travel volume, several of the locations in Luxor instituted a travel trolley system to get you closer to the monuments without having to keep buses right up on top of them. Here is a picture of the trolley we took to Hatshetsup's Temple.

    It is highly recommended for you to take the WagonsLit sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor for the authentic experience riding along the Nile River all night long. The train stations, in both cities, are easy to navigate, though we found few English speaking workers. It was approx. $90usd roundtrip in a first class sleeper (in Nov. 03) and lasted almost 9 hours. You need to buy your ticket at least one day in advance of travel. Make sure you're in the correct line for the proper tickets you need. We had our English speaking taxi driver come inside the train station with us to help make the purchase. The beds were comfortable, the room was private (for two people), it had a mirror, sink and small spot to hang items. We were served dinner and breakfast, each quite adequate. The train itself can be a little noisy on the tracks, I slept with earplugs once I was ready to sleep and no longer view the sites outside our window. There's a smoking car for gathering, and well, smoking, and you should feel completely safe with the guard stationed at the end of each car carrying a machine gun. Yikes! Even though it is dark outside, many of the small towns the train slowly passed through had lights and we could see neighborhoods; quite, calm and beautiful in the moonlight. It's a wonderful experience for the traveler in all of us. Go to Egypt, visit the pyramids, the bazaars, the temples, take a train ride and eat dinner on the Nile. You won't be disappointed in the least! :)

    There seems to be no way around it. Horse carriages can not only be found in Luxor, but also many in Edfu and some in Assuan. Before you enter one of these carriages, make sure you haggle over the price (and maybe also if the Bakshish is includet yet, or not). I would not pay more than 30 EP for a 1 hour ride. Also have a look at the horse. Look how it is treated. It is well fed or are the rips showing all over? I realize that a different culture also treats the horses different (and they are some very special ones, I could not see a horse where I live walking right next to -and through - honking cars and such) - but they beat the horses a little too much in my opinion. Anyway, it is a nice way to see the city of Luxor and I would recommend to do it.

    Well, the 8th day of our tour was coming to a close, and boy was I tired! I had already left the cruise ship, and toured the city all evening... all I wanted to do was SLEEP! And sleep I did, since it took almost 2 hours to wait for the buses to take us from the terminal to the plane!

    For a visit to the westbank you can take the ferry. The ferry leaves from a dock in front of the Luxor Temple. You can take your bike with you. It's also possible to hire a bike at the westbank near the ferry, but there is more and cheaper choice in town.

    To feel free we hired a bike for the day instead of hire a hantour ( carriage). To have a bike is easy for a visit to the Temple of Karnak. And to cross the Nile to the westbank and to go around by bike, it's marvellous. We did several times.

    If you don't take the ferry to the westbank, you can go by motor launch. Everywhere along the banks you see these boats. You can go any time you like. If you go around by bike, it's the best to start early in the morning because of the heat at midday. You pay 5 to 15 egyptian pounds for a boat.
