It's ok, if you like traveling 300km's for days...
  • Tip Rating:
  • This sort of transportation I wouldn't recomand. But I couldn't resist puting it on the page.

    Camils are so wonderful...

    Nile Cruise
  • Tip Rating:
  • We jumped on a cruise ship in Aswan & days later eventually wound up in Luxor. It was a wonderful unexpected bonus to our backpacking trip. We got such a cheap deal we would have been mad not to have done it (£45.00!) .

Bicycle: I like to ride my bicycle
Hired bikes are something else. Bikes in Egypt are heavy single-geared Chinese things engineered to carry on whether they are properly maintained or not. Predictably, 'not' is the favoured option. It is imperative to give any bike you propose to hire a complete checkover . Not just the obvious do the tyres have air and do the brakes work, but also do the pedals rotate freely? Are the cranks bent? Is the headset shagged? What looks like it might fall off as soon as you set off down the road? Can you work the lock? (that locks are considered necessary here says something about Luxor)

Bikes should cost no more than 10 LE a day . The bikes available on the West bank seem to be generally newer than those on the east bank, but you still need to check your proposed steed thoroughly.

Once you've done all this, it's a great way to get around, especially to appreciate the surrounding rural lanscape.

    Bicycle: By Bike
Luxor has hundreds of bike shops and all hotels offer bicycles ranging in price and quality. They usually cost between 10 to 20 egyptian pounds and if you are in Luxor during the winter then this option is not only good exercise but a great way to independantely see luxor without killing your feet.

    Little blue and white buses
Every where in Luxor you will see blue and white mini buses...these are the local buses.
You can flag them down anywhere, if you want to go somewhere specific, just ask if they go there....ie macdonalds, Karnak, Hospital/sunshine orphange. Someone on there will speak enough english to say yes or no and so you flag down another.
You pay a flat 25 piastas per journey and it is great way to see the real luxor.
Yes, thats right...just 1LE for 4 of you to explore!
Taxis and horse and carraiges should cost no more than 10LE one way. (15-20LE if there are more than 4 of you in the taxi which can carry 7)
But the buses are great fun and someone will always show you which way to go if the bus doesnt stop exactly where you want to go.

    Micro
Mini vans will take you anywhere in Luxor. Each has a set route and can be very confusing. Just pray that one of the passengers speaks English, or write down your intended destination in Arabic (Your hotel will do this for you)

    Local shuttle buses
The local blue and white shuttlebusses are so cheap you (as a westerner) will never have a coin small enough. They are easy, safe and very friendly. A great route is from the centre of town to karnak and back. wave down and jump where the main road bends sharply north of the catholic church. Get out at the entrance of Karnak. On the way back wave down where you got out and get a pleasent side trip and tour of karnak village before retuning to Luxor town. Pay what you like you will over pay but we paid E£1each way for 2.

Carriages: Rythmic romantic ride "toko tak toko tak..."
Hantour rides along Luxor's Corniche have always been a tourist favourite.

(Hantour is the Arabic name of such carriage.)

Such romantic convoys give a sort of special pleasure to tourists, mainly in Luxor (Upper Egypt) and Alexadria (North Egypt).

Let me advise you not to miss such experience and enjoy the rythm of the horse steps accompanied by its ornaments.."♫ღToko tak..Toko tak..Toko tak .♫ღ hmmmm

Around Valley of Kings and temples
I hooked up with a taxi driver at the Luxor west bank ferry jetty to go for Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queen, Deir al-Medina (workmen's village), Medinat Habu temple, Hatshepsut temple, Ramesseum. All 6 places costs 80 EGP for two persons.

In fact, i know that you can bargain to 60 EGP. I started out at 7am till 2pm in the afternoon. The driver is very nice and I even visited is house for tea during break time, something that you need when you move around under the hot sun. His name is Moahmund and his taxi plate number is 1335. See pic of his car, his card and his house. His mobile is as on the card: 0020-10347-4194.
