 | Luxor Warnings or Dangers | Tips 1 - 10 of 61 | | | | | | Harrassment: Hassle | Tip Rating: | | | | |
In Luxor you cannot escape the hawkers wanting you to part with your money. It can get to you, if you let it, as some are really persistant. They are mostly found along the stretch of the Nile by the Old Winter Palace, where they will have their Felucca sailing boats or motor boats waiting. Some try to find out exactly where you are going, why you are going and what you will be doing tomorrow so they can see if they are in with a chance of selling something to you. It can get annoying when all you want to do is stroll along in private. Just keep saying no thank you and keep walking, or say that it is your last day and you have done everything, as most of the time, if they try and sell you one thing, and that didn’t work, they will move onto something else that they could offer you! Obviously you can listen to them and see if you can haggle a reasonable price eg we wanted to go to Valley of the Kings, privately, and not on a tour, so when one of the hawkers approached us we got him to give us a price for return transport to the West Bank by motor boat, and a taxi for the main part of the day to the Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatchepsut and Colossi of Memnon. You can always walk away if they don’t come down to a reasonable price. Sometimes, you are not always sure if you are being ripped off, but enjoy it, you are on holiday! The best thing to do is pay what you think something is worth. It is best not to get too hung up on money. Leave a Comment

 | | | | Theft and scams: Naser | Tip Rating: | | | | |
We met Naser when get off the buss at Luxor’s buss station. There were a lot of locals and all of them were trying to get tourists for some cheap hotels. Naser was one of them. He, as we understood, was from “Venus Hotel”. And as we had read about “Venus Hotel” in our guide book, we decided to go and see how it look’s like. Naser was ready to show us the shortest way to this hotel. Here i must remark that “Venus Hotel” isn’t far away form buss station and the Temple of Luxor. Very fast Naser became our “Friend’ :-) He was ready to show all that we like to see, he was ready to became our guide and he was ready to take our money.... As we didn’t know the real prices – in some things we trusted to Naser.... And it was very good lesson for future!!! So, if some day ;-) you met Naser, be ready that he will try to find some way how to get your money ;-))) For example, we payed for “Trip on donkeys” 50,-LE per person only because Naser understand that we doesn’t know how much it costs in reality. In reality price is about 25,-LE per person.... So, be ready :-))) Leave a Comment

 | | | | Theft and scams: Ticket office scam | Tip Rating: | | | | |
By the time you get to Luxor you might have already realised that you need to be extremely specific in giving instructions to taxi drivers but we still got caught. If you organise a taxi to go to the Valley of the Kings, be aware that the ticket office for the VotK is NOT the ticket office for other attractions in the area. If you say that you want to go to the valley, and the driver says he'll take you to "the ticket office", make sure it's the Valley of the Kings ticket office and not the 'general' one. Otherwise he'll take you to the first ticket office, which is several kilometres *before* the valley of the kings, then demand more money to take you the rest of the way, claiming that this is the ticket office you arranged for him to take you to. If it gets ugly, don't hesitate about getting out of the taxi. Other taxis, buses and local transports regularly pass the first ticket office so you won't be stranded. You could even walk back into Luxor, it's only 2-3km. Tickets for the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and Temple of Hatshepsut are all bought at the sites themselves. Tickets for other sites like the Ramesseum, tombs of the workers & nobles, are bought at the first ticket offce. Tickets for King Tut's tomb - sold seperately from general Valley of the King entrance tickets - are bought at the VotK ticket office. Leave a Comment

It's not a danger but more of a warning...where ever you go in Egypt make sure you take some toilet paper. ;) I guess around half of the places we went didn't have any toilet paper...some (mostly where you paid to enter) did have toilet paper though. Don't expect too much of the toilets in Egypt and you won't be grossed out... ;) Leave a Comment

I would just like to share my experience upon arrival in Luxor Airport. I was very overwhelmed by the hordes of people rushing besides me. If you need to do your visa, pls do it before you queue at the immigration counter. It's a small counter but trust me, you would see lotsa people fighting for space in front of that small cubicle. So just join the queue. After that, while you are going to collect your luggage, and you want to get a trolley....be careful. You must be prepared to tip. yes, Baksheesh. There would be a guy who is apparently the boss of a lot of trolleys. So take the trolley unless you have a lot of things to carry or if you dun mind the tipping. Leave a Comment
