Theft and scams: Boat trips and luxor
  • Tip Rating:
  • Myself and my partner have been on boat trips down the Nile and stayed in luxor and Cairo, couple of hints I might suggest

    1) When you are shopping in the local bazzars people will try to say that they work on your boat and try to make you feel very guilty for not paying them so please buy from there stall when they not working, they have a photo there of A boat and they also pretent to know you, nice little trick but if you really wanna know if they telling parkies Ask them the name of the boat they work on, and I bet you get the answers most of them...dont fall for it,it is a scam.

    2) Local men will approach other men and ask you if you want a Good time, now if you are gay or like a bit of both, BE SAFE, they are usually going to rob you, get you to goto a local hotel and you pay for the room, or even worse undercover police, may I remind you this is a muslim country and if you are cought have gay sex or even a hint of it you WILL end in Jail, and they aint nice!!

    3) Herbs and spices. Simple rule is DONT buy them , you see huge bag of saffron for very cheap price, unfortunaly it is usually colour Donky crap or simalar if you dont know what saffron looks like it should be long strands of deep orangey red, they should be about a cm long and no shorted, if shorter and poweder ask for a sample and pop in some water should dye the water orange around where you dropped it str8 away or very quickly.

    Harrassment: Tipping
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well would you trust what i say?? i have read good reviews here about how to deal with people ask persistantly in luxor and even Cairo for tipping,
First of all where can you meet these kind of people?
    1-Train station;
it is the first place where you will find yourself surrounded by many people who say:TAXI TAXI,if you didn't organize your tour with compnay or local office so best thing is to hurry up away from the station and look for your company bus.
    2-Historical places:
they will be around and try to buy you some thing, evenif you say thank you they will follow you trying to persuade you, just say thank you and keep walking around, they will give up when see you aren't really interested!!!
    3-Streets:
this is the hardest part because you can meet various kinds of people, one try to sell some thing and others try to tell they can organize you tour and some others say just they want to be friend with you!! ALL types trying finally to get money from you so you have to pretend you are really offended and want to leave quickly, they will give up at you and look for some one else ; )
If you have further questions please don't hesitate to ask me or send e-mail.

    Harrassment: Some hassle
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the whole Luxor is safe and the hassle you encounter is primarily from people begging or looking to sell you something. The only thing that is hassle is their incredible PERSISTANCE. You have to match this by being really firm, respectful and as suggested by others calm.

We were approached by a small boy about 10 / 11 years of age near the market in Luxor. He had a small packet of paper tissues and appeared to be trying to sell them to us. One of our group felt sorry for him and gave him some money but did not take the packet of tissues from him (on basis that the boy could sell them to someone else). The child followed us for nearly a mile dragging out of each of us in turn and whining but we could not understand him. We were not sure whether he wanted us to take the tissues or give him more money or what ! We did a complete loop around Luxor and it wasn't until we passed the Museum that an Egyptian lady doing a guided tour spoke to him and sent him home. It turned out he wanted more money for us to buy the tissues and was holding out for the price. Be firm but polite is the main advice. Say no thank and please go away...and all the better if you can say them in Arabic.

Apart for the usual Felucca and private tour sales touts and the usual pressure at the souks to bargain we did not encounter any major issues. The advice here is say you are going home the following day and you don't have any money left. They will try to engage you in conversation...remember they are expert salespeople ...don't tell them where you are staying, what trips you are doing or any information they will be able to use to attract your attention when they see you again. However, do avoid being rude., arrogant or condesending....they are just doing their job the way they do it...its not personal !

    Harrassment: LUXOR.....Hassle central!
  • Tip Rating:
  • When approached by merchants, touts or other unsavoury characters....a smile and a firm 'la shukran' (no thankyou) usually work.

If they persist, try 'ishmi' (go away).

if all else fails..'la fuluss' (no money)

a sense of humour is necessary.

no physical harm will befall you but your ears drums may take a battering.

i felt safer walking around luxor in the dark than i have ever felt in daylight in london.

    In Egypt there aren't steals
  • Tip Rating:
  • My bag wasn't stolen in Egypt! - Luxor
My bag wasn't stolen in Egypt!

It has seemed unusual to me the attitude of the team of our boat and Egyptians in general to luggage and things of tourists. Our bags and suitcases have been unloaded from the bus by porters and carried to the hall of our ship through decks of the several ships standing at the mooring.

The luggage waited for us there several hours while we had dinner and went on our excursion to the Western bank of the Nile. I instinctively was looking out some times around my bag among other bags and suitcases, being afraid of loosing it. The idea that somebody can steal the bag was coming to me several times, but the next days I have understood, that in this Islamic country the larceny or do not exist in general, or practically is not widespread.

In Egypt there aren't steals! Being on a deck and sunbathing or bathing, I left my camera and video camera, phone and hours on a couch. Coming back, I always found them in safety.

    Harrassment: Getting hassled...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you get hassled by the locals all you need to do is say firmly and loudly "La Shakrun" (our guide said to say it la shock-run)... We found that most of the time the locals would just joke around with us - "ah, you are so beautiful", "how many camels for your wife", "I have what you want", "you have beautiful eyes" etc...we just laughed it off most of the time and that usually worked. But if someone was pushy then our La Shakrun came in handy...

    Tomb of Tuthmosis III
  • Tip Rating:
  • The tomb of Tuthmosis III is well worth visiting because the artwork is so different. Stick figures replace the normally carefully carved human forms. HOWEVER, anyone who suffers from breathlessness or high blood pressure, or has trouble with their legs should give it a miss. To get there entails climbing up the wooden steps to almost the top of the cliff. And it is a long way up.
Going down is just as bad. On our return, we collapsed on the nearest rock to recover.

be aware with locals [ps: not all of them, nice people still can be found here. don’t worry :) ] who keep push you with the same modus operandi “the road is closed, the road is closed, so let me bring you to the local bazaar.” or insisted to company you to the papyrus museum and perfume.

Law Enforcement: Ladies. Please Shout when you are touched
  • Tip Rating:
  • Please try to understand what i will say.

In any society there are the goods and bads. In some cases you meet one or both. A European friend of mine (a lady) was travelling to sharm with the bus and when she arrived and we met she was very nervous about something. Do you want to know what?
    Well.
She was complaining from a stupid man who was sitting in the seat behind her. the man kept touching her hair and body.
She paniced to the extent that she couldnt handle the situation in the right way.
My advice to her and to you of course is the following: If the above happens to you, please go straight to the bus driver and make your complaint . If the driver didnt make any firm action, then wait till you reach the police check point (there are many of them on the road and the policemen comes up to the bus to check IDs) and make a report. The stupid man will be grapped and face problems.

Please dont be silent towards such acts cause your silence can generate real troubles not only to you but to the Egyptian tourism industry.

    Theft and scams: Train Gangs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Conveniently we were informed of this after we had had our bags stolen on the train.

According to the Chief of Transport Police there is a growing number of incidents occurring on the Tourist Trains whereby gangs of thieves are operating. Due to the long nature of the journey the only occupation is to sleep. If you travel first class you will be in a compartment with possibly 4 or 5 other occupants. ATTACH YOUR BAGS TO YOUR PERSON BY SOME MEANS as the train thieves will actually crawl across the floor to steal your bags if they are under the seats. If travelling in a group, ensure at least one of you is awake at any one time and if you leave the compartment wake someone else up to watch your bags. BE WARNED THE REPORTING PROCESS IS A LENGTHY MONOTONOUS AND INTIMIDATING ONE SO DONT EXPECT TO RELAX UPON YOUR ARRIVAL IF SOMETHING HAS BEEN STOLEN.
