A granite sphinx with the head of Cleopatra's father emerged from the choppy waters of Alexandria harbor after 1,600 years under water. The city, where the lives of Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony intertwined, disappeared beneath the sea more than 1,600 years ago after a series of earthquakes and flood waves.

Some alternatives are being reviewed to let one enjoy visiting such sumberged monuments under the Mediterranean Sea in Alexandria: 1) Transfering them out of the sea to the rlevant museum. 2) Installation of a highly durable glass tube forming an underwater unique museum. 3) Dedicating a submarine to move around. Same way is already adopted in the Red Sea around the fantastic coral reefs and underwater gardens. HOWEVER 4) Divers and those who are capable to exercise such underwater sport have no problem - for sure. How lovely if one could do it! Relevant clubs are available here...

Divers led by French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio used global satellite positioning devices to map out the royal quarter, lying five meters (17 feet) under water, not far from the busy modern city seafront. Dear Mr. Goddio! I find myself obliged to thank you and your 35 divers' team.

    historical sightseeing: Submerged Monumets lifted
  • Tip Rating:
  • The mission succeeded in cleaning up and preparing for tourist divers the location of Mark Antony's palace, the Timonium. It also cleaned up the wreckage of an ancient 35-metre wooden ship that lies on the bottom of Alexandria's harbour. Two gold coins dating to the second century AD were discovered during the operations, as well as the limbs of a statue of Ptolemy II.

At the monastery of Bishoy (Deir Anba Bishoi) a coptic monk showed us the place and explained us the history of the Coptic Christians in Wadi Atrun. After the Romans in the 4th century AD came the destructive raids of the Arabs in 871 AD The originally unprotected communities were fortified afterwards. The monasticism is experiencing a revival, with younger Copts to live within the walls of the ancient monasteries in the desert.

Deir Anba Bishoi is founded by St Bishoi. Deir Anab Bishoi contains the body of the saint Bishoi and also the remains of Paul of Tamweh. The story tells, he committed suicide seven times. Except the churh the monastery has within its walls cells for the monks, a kitchen, bakery, dining hall and a lot of store rooms. The mud architecture of the white buildings with organic sculptural forms is lovely.

    coptic monastery: Deir Anba Bishoi
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Wadi Natrun in the desert in the past thousands of Christians retreated to escape the Roman persecution in the 4th century AD. They lived in caves, built monasteries and developed the monastic traditions. Of the 60 monasteries scattered over the valley nowadays only four remained. Except the newly built church many of the buildings around have the organic mud architecture.

coptic monastery: Wadi Atrun, Deir Anba Bishoi
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the way from Cairo to Alexandria is Wadi Natrun, a cultivated valley connected to the Coptic Church. In the valley are several Coptic Monasteries. The central point of the monasteries was the church. Around the churchs the Copts built other buildings like a dininghall, store rooms, cells for the monks. We visited the Monastery of Bishoi (Deir Anba Bishoi). During our visit is an Easter mass in the church. A lot of people walked with a Palm Sunday palm. It looks like a scene of the bible.

St. Mark Cathedral in Alexandria, called the Copte-Orthodox Patriarchate, is quite difficult to find in the narrow and crowded streets of the city center. Actually it’s better to ask for "Mar Morkous" direction, St. Mark name in Arabic. The Saint Apostle and Evangelist Mark, the one that spread the Christian religion in Egypt, came to Alexandria around 48 AD and hide until he was captured and killed by the god Serapion advocates in 68 AD. The pagans tied him on a horse tail and let the horse run on Bokalia streets in Alexandria for two days, until he died. His saint relics are worshiped in three important cathedrals in the world, located in Alexandria, Cairo and Venice. In a crypt on the southern part of the church are buried all Alexandria's patriarchs, from St. Mark the Evangelist on.

    sea walking: Modern Alexandria Lighthouse
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many of the tourists are rushing to Alexandria only to have a look at the remaining of the famous Pharos Lighthouse. Only few know that nothing has remained till now. Now tourists may watch a modern lighthouse not far from the Muntaza Park and imagine the ancient prototype as it could be seen from this point. So did I! I think that in a few years the remaining of the Lighthouse will be happily found and the amount of tourists rushing to Alexandria will certainly increase! That is a law of tourist business which, as I could see, operates well in Luxor, Aswan, Edfu and other Egyptian “ancient” sights.
