Seafood restaurants: Fresh and Yummy Seafood

  • It is located right on Alexandria Beach Front. You will see a nice fresh fish decoration at the entrance with great waitress. The dining tables will be on the first floor where you can see a wonderful view of Alexandria beach. It has a clean toilet and surroundings. The starters will be arabic interesting salad. You will be excited to try them all. One set of menu will be with 2 kinds of fish, squid and shrimp. The serving time is quite longer than what we expected, perhaps it is because they want to serve the fresh ones only.

Try one set of fried seafood. Really crispy, taste great, and good enough for your heavy lunch. It will be served with arabic salad and sauces,6-8 of them, and arabic bread.

traditional&local Egyptian food: The best lamb chops on the planet
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Clean, spacious, with an old world feel, I felt comfortable from the moment I entered. The staff was more than attentive, which is something very uncommon I found while dining in Egypt. The moment we sat down, our drink orders were taken and promptly delivered. The mezze arrived just as quickly. There was a longer delay for the main course to arrive, as the meat is grilled, but it wasn't an issue for us as we had just polished off beans, cheeses, salad and bread.

We had a platter of different grilled meats:chicken, beef, and lamb. The lamb chops were something else. I've never tasted anything so delicious and next time I shall just order the lamb. The meal started out with the traditional mezze, a variety of appetizers. I enjoy this part of the egyptian/arab meal. I think they have the most healthy appetizers, unless you consider plain salad an app. Then came the main meal. The smells, the taste....I thought this was the best meal I had my entire stay in Egypt.

    Waiting for lunch at Alexandra
    Dive Centre

Alexandra Dive Centre has a good location in the Eastern Harbour. Except Tika Chicken next to the dive centre there are no other places for eating or drinking just by the sea (along the Cornish there is the beach, the street and then the cafes and restaurants). It is nice to sit here, away from the traffic. Normally the dive centre doesn’t serve food, but only drinks. But when I was there to ask for the diving I was very hungry and they brought me food from somewhere else. I had chicken and chips and a coke for 20 pounds. When you dive lunch is included in the price and served after the dives. This is very good as it is nice to sit down and relax after the diving and have time to chat with your fellow divers.

  • Kadoura is a local seafood restaurant, you won't see many foreigners, and the food is cheap and wonderful. They serve salads, appetizers, and fish. When you arrive, you will be shown a large selection of fish, crabs, shrimp, and calamari by the friendly waiters. You get the option of having your seafood either fried or grilled, and beware that all fish will come whole. The waiters will tell you which fish is best grilled and which is best fried. After you choose your seafood, you will be sat and then served a bunch of salads, baba ghanoush, hummus, and pickled vegetables. Your fish will come with some sticky brown rice, and grilled tomatoes and onions.

The grilled shrimp and fried calamari were yummy. It's cool coz you can choose a combination of different things, and share amongst your group.

    coffee shops: Yummy cakes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not until the last evening in Alexandria did I have a cake at Delicies. I wish I had found out earlier that the cakes were so delicious. Delicies has big old rooms and also a place to sit outside. There is an entrance both from Saad Zaghloul Street and from the square on the opposite side. There is a big choice of different cakes and you point at the one you want. At the café you can also have ice cream, tea and coffee and breakfast.

I met the owner of this restaurant, Afaf Farsi, at the Amrican Embassy in Cairo. She told me she had a restaurant in Alex, but not the exact location. Of course I didn't ask either. Turned out that it was not that far from the hotel that we were staying at. From the outside, it seemed like it was an older restaurant. We were surprised when we entered to discover that it was new and elegant. It had the look and feel of neoclassicism. We were greeted by someone a little too long after we had been standing in the entrance way, but at that point I was already familiar with the service one can expect in Egypt. We picked a table and sat and waited. And waited. Finally, a server came and started to take our order. This was the beginning of spoty service. We had 5 different servers at our table, the service was slow and the appetizers came a few minutes before 2 of the dinners. The dinners were sent back with clear instructions not to place them under the heat lamps, but that's where they ended up we discovered when they brought the food back out. At that point, my daughter's were frustrated and just ate the food. I spoke to the owner's brother afterwards, as he knew I was in the restaurant industry, plus I found out he owns a restaurant in North Carolina. He knew there were problems with the service and assured me they were working on it. In the US, when there are service issues, as well as food issues in a restaurant, the management goes out of their way to make it right for the customer. Not so in Egypt. Our check was not paid for, nor were we even offered dessert to atone for the sloppy service and the food that sat in the window. I was very disappointed in this regard.

I had the Lamb. I love lamb and what better way to enjoy lamb but in a country where lamb is a main staple? I found it to be too fatty and greasy. It wasn't fresh like what I had eaten in other less fancy establishments. It was good, don't get me completely wrong here, but it wasn't the best that I had experienced. Jaeda had chicken parm and I can't recall what she exactly said, but I recall that it wasn't her best. I tried it and I thought it was good. Don't listen to her as she is beyond a finicky eater. The plate presentation was very nice.

Seafood restaurants: Fresh from the Sea
  • Tip Rating:

  • A big restaurant where you select your fish. Lots of salads and bread are served with your order-- a meal on its own , so don't fill up. The main meal itself is also several courses from shellfish, small fish and large. There is also a dessert trolley, and finish with mint tea or coffee. Well prepared and good service

Again spoiled for choice. But, I'd opt for "meru" - stuffed with herbs and spices and baked in the oven.

traditional&local Egyptian food: Like being in a barn

  • This restaurant looks as if it is situated in an old warehouse. It is spacious with no frills, but the service is excellent and the food too. It is obviously well patronized by the locals as we saw no other tourists.

fofta, kebab and stuffed vine leaves with all the dkps. There was a lot so I was not able to eat it all.

  • Unfortunately don’t know the name of this seafood restaurant (if you understand Arabic you can find it on my second pic) but remember its location just near the Fort of Quit Bay at the Corniche (look at my GoogleEarth Panoramio location). It was a good decision to have a dinner for our group consisted of 30 tourists. It took us less than an hour. The meal included 3 types of local fish which names I don’t remember as well. I’m a bad restaurant adviser… I paid LE35 ($7) without drinks. A bottle of local beer costs LE20 ($4). You may watch my high resolution photos on Google Earth in Alexandria Seafood Restaurant according to the following coordinates 31º 12' 34.19" N 29º 52' 55.34" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Photo.

    Mediterranean food: Pizza anyone?
  • Tip Rating:

  • This restaurant and take away is tucked away almost next to Gad on Mahatat el Raml . Upstairs is the seating area. It is decorated with old pictures, old bits and pieces like an iron, tankards, cauldrons and trays. The walls are white painted brick with wooden beams here and there. Tables are granite topped and everything has a rustic feel. Service is good.

The pizzas are excellent with light crisp dough. The 'oriental pies' = fateer, are also tasty, light with a cheese filling.
