Beaches: Where you can wear a bikini and no one blinks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montazah Beach. What can I say? I loved it here. The views, the relaxed atmosphere, the warmth of the sun, the lukewarm water and my bestest male friend in the whole wide world made this my best day in paradise. I had gone to another beach, Maamoura, which was nice but I was uncomfortable as they have designated areas for those women who wear bathing suits, and those women that wear the jihab and galabaya. Even though I was at my designated beach, I was reluctant to enter into the water with out shorts on. Montazah beach has women wearing bikini's. Exposing parts of the breasts, albeit covered with a bathing suit top, brings no stares nor uncomfortable feeling.

Alexandria with some 5 million inhabitants is a waterfront city with a waterfront of nearly 20KM.
The eastern harbour with the seafront Corniche (Sharia of the 26th July) is the most central part.
We really enjoyed to walk here along the seaside in the late afternoon. We saw many ice-charts, vendors of flowers, a lot of stalls with sweets, strolling families and fishing kids.
From our hotelroom at the Corniche we saw a beautifull sunset with the silhouets of the city with its mosques. Marvellous!

    PLACES TO SEE IN ALEX
  • Tip Rating:
  • Among other modern places to see in Alexandria today are the following :

The corniche : It is one of two main roads in Alexandria stretching alongside the long beaches of the city, it was paved in the 19th century and expanded throughout the years. It has been widened recently to absorb the increasing number of vehicles. You can have a walk on the corniche to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful view of the sea especially during sunrise or sunset. Many people practice jogging on the especially paved sideway on the seaside lighthouse shaped wall.
Stanley bridge : Built over the Stanley bay to be one way road as part of the expansion of the corniche. It was inspired by the Montazah Palace with its Islamic style four towers at both ends of the bridge. Many people walk on the bridge to enjoy the view of the sea and the bay. You can also enjoy the beach under the bridge which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Alexandria.
Saad Zaghloul square : Also known as Raml Station, it is the city's downtown square . Cleopatra's needles once stood here. The statue of the Twentieth Century leader celebrates Saad Zaghloul's successful attempt to unify the Egyptian people in 1919 against the British. The renovated historic Cecil Hotel is one of the main buildings built early in the 20th century.
Al Manshia square : Located at the old Turkish Quarter, Mansheya or Al Tahrir is Alexandria's main square. Recently renovated, the Square features a statue of Mohamed Ali, Egypt's viceroy in the early 18th Century. The courthouse or Al Haqania building is one of the 19th century buildings that stands a witness to a great civilization that considered art an essential part of architectural design

At the east side of the Cornich you can visit the gardens of former King Farouk. You have to pay some small admission fee to go there, but can take your own car in the large gardens.
The former palaces have another destination nowadays (casino, museum and hotel)
There is a beach, a nice walking bridge, views at the waterfront. It's a nice place, if you like a relaxed day not far from the city.

    Pompey's Pillar: Pompey's Pillar
  • Tip Rating:
  • For a city with such a historic name as Alexandria, there is surprising little left that is intact from the city's glory days of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra.

One relic that does remain is Pompey's pillar at he Serapeum. Though this was once a mighty temple, all that is left now is the large pillar and a couple of sphinxes to adorn the hill top. (it is still possible to line up a decent picture up here, though...)

The view at the western and eastern harbours and the Corniche is amazing.
When I saw this sight for the first time during one of my flights from Cairo back home, I decided to visit this city one of the next times.

    Roman amphitheatre: Alexandria, ancient history
  • Tip Rating:
  • The ancient history of Alexandria is for the largest part invisible, hidden under the ground and sea.
You can visit the Graeco Roman Museum with 40.000 artifacts from the 3th century BC.
Near the railwaystation are excavations of romans ruins between modern buildings, The excavations started, when the foundations for new apartment buildings had to be made.

Under the Ptolemies, the city became the literary and scientific center of the ancient world. After the defeat of Cleopatra, queen of Egypt, at Actium in 31 BC and her suicide the following year, the city came under the rule of Octavian, later the Roman emperor Augustus, and was governed by a prefect appointed by him.
