Greco Roman monuments: The Hellenistic Deity
  • Tip Rating:
  • The compromise : Serapis* This feature of god was invented in Alexandria by Ptolemy I with the intention of providing a god capable of being worshipped by both Egyptians and Greeks. Apis bulls -as above mentioned- were considered sacred from very early times in Egypt. This was his compromise and both -the bull and the man shapes- kept the Egyptian god's name Serapis -derived from Osarapis = Osiris+Apis.

Greco Roman monuments: The Egyptian Deity
  • Tip Rating:
  • Apis (in Egyptian , Hapi) was a form of the Nile-god. He was later known as an incarnation of the son of Osiris. At Memphis Apis was worshipped as the renewed life of Ptah. The chief cult centre of Apis was moved to Alexandria under Ptolemy Soter who, when he as pondering which god could be made the national deity, had a dream in which he saw a staute of a bull-god. Ptolemy ordered it to be brought to Alexandria, and built a new Serapeum for it there.

    Greco Roman monuments: Tanagra
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tanagra was a chief town of east Boeotia in Greece. In the 4th century it declined in importance, but it flourished in Hellenistic and Roman times. In Alexandria such trracotta figures kept the name and the art.

In Alexandria, Graeco-Roman and pharaonic religions mingled in the cult of Serapis; the shift from pagan religions to Christianity can also be seen in the exhibits which include mummies, Hellenistic statues of Roman emperors, Tanagra figurines and early Christian antiquities. Greco Roman monuments: Graeco-Roman Museum
A history museum with a vast collection mostly dating from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, spanning the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The Graeco-Roman Museum of Alexandria in Egypt was created in 1892. It was first built in an 5-room apartment, inside one small building in Rosetta Street (later Avenue Canope and nowadays Horriya). In 1895, it was transferred to another building that only had eleven rooms. More rooms were added later to this building, now located near Gamal Abdul Nasser Street. There are a lot of pieces from the 3rd century BC, like a nice sculpture of Apis in black granite, the sacred bull of the Egyptians, mummies, sarcophagus, tapestries, and a lot of objects and sculptures that offer us a view of graeco-roman civilization in contact with Egypt.

  • Address: Located near Gamal Abdul Nasser Street
