fort of Qaitbey: Fort of Qaitbey or the citadel
I had a lot of fun here, and I'm glad to report that Egyptians has done a great job in preserving this citadel to a clean and beautiful state. You get 2 views of the sea here. If you look young, just say that you're students and just pay LE 6 to get in. Have time to explore every corner of the citadel.

fort of Qaitbey: The Citadel
In the harbour of Alexandria, on the place where the famous lighthouse used to be, you can visit the Fort of Quaitbey. In fact, the ruins from the old lighthouse were used to construct the current fort in 1480. Today, this symbol of the city houses the Naval Museum.

fort of Qaitbey: Le fort Qait Bay
Bertrand Noble

Standing close to where the famous ancient lighthouse once stood, the white castle of Qaitbey seems to float in the sea. From across the harbour, it almost seems like an island, with brightly painted fishing boats bobbing up and down all around it, but up close, you'll see that it is connected to the rest of the city by a pedestrian walkway. The fort now houses a Naval Museum, which unfortunately did not tempt me to part with my pounds, so I can only tell you about the outside...it would have been nice to go inside just for the views across the Eastern Harbour, but money was fast disappearing at that point! Instead, we sat by the entrance eating popcorn, watching locals hurl themselves from the rocks into the water. The area has been recently "done up" for tourists, but in september, there were precious few of them about.

  • Directions: If you are on the Corniche and look left, it should be obvious where the fort is...minibuses to Anfushi will take you close, if your legs aren't up to the walk.

fort of Qaitbey: A Beautiful Fort
The Fort of Qaitbay sports a beautiful architecture by the Alexandria bay. Aside from its obvious old purpose, the fort is said to approximately occupies the same site of the famous (and long gone) Lighthouse of Alexandria. I read somewhere that some of the stones of the lighthouse was used to built the existing fort. Outside in the terrace, you can have a panoramic view of Alexandria. And, if you have a powerful telephoto zoom lens, you can even have a full view of some architectures like the Alexandria Bibliotheca. The entrance fee is EGP 12 and photography is permitted.

The ancient Lighthouse of Pharos in Alexandria was destroyed by an earthquake in the 14th century. In its place stands the present Fort Qaitbey, a castle built presumably from remnants of the ancient lighthouse. Located on the harbour front, you cannot miss this monument. Even if you do not enter the fort, it is a very pleasant stroll along the waterfront promanade.

fort of Qaitbey: A nice empty fort
The fort is strongly renewed and inside there is nothing just the bald walls. Still worth a visit though because it is offering some great view of the city and the sea as well.

    fort of Qaitbey: Fort Qaitbey
The good news is that this is an impressive fort overlooking the Mediterranean. The bad news is that an even more impressive lighthouse once stood here. This marks the spot of the Pharos lighthouse, which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The current fort contains an old mosque and has some very fantastic lookouts towards the sea and the city. Even on a summer day, there are some areas to stand where a very nice ocean breeze can be felt. It certainly beats the heat of Cairo and Luxor. Scuba divers also explore this area as some of ancient Alexandra lies below the water. The fort stands near the entrance to the city's harbor.

The island of Pharos was a major port having two huge harbors. The Fort was built in the 1480's by Sultan Qaitbey, on the site of Alexandria's ancient lighthouse. Parts of the remains of the lighthouse can be seen in the construction of the old fort. One of the seven wonders of the ancient World, the lighthouse was an astonishing 125m in height with approximately three hundred rooms at the bottom for workers. Running through the center was a double spiral ascent and hydraulic machinery that raised fuel to the top. The lantern at the top of the lighthouse remains a mystery. Some say it contained a polished steel mirror that reflected light by day, and fire by night. Others say it was made of transparent glass. The lantern and the top two stories fell around 700 AD according to many reports, and the rest of the lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake around 1100. In its place a Mosque was built, which was damaged by an earthquake in the 14th century. The entrance is through a gateway made of red Aswan granite. Located beside the mosque is a cistern that was used to store water in case of a siege. Also located inside the fort is the Naval Museum which contains artifacts from the Roman and Napoleonic sea battles. The views of the Alexandria coastline and the bay from the top of the fort are great!!
