Enough has been written about the Library of Alexandria, past and present, so I won't bore you. But, I must emphasise that it is worth seeing. I was lucky to get a guided tour before the official opening, as People who went since say not all the guides give a useful tour, often omiotting important areas. One group said they were bombarded with facts and figures - x tons of steel, cement, nuts and bolts. It did not include a roll call of the workers, or they didn't say so, but by then they may have switched off. The quality of the tour also depends on what language the guide is using, and how many are in the party. No matter what, take the tour and make up your own mind. Once Alexandria gave home to "The Great Library" during the old times. When Ceasar battled with the Greeks in the harbour, according to the history books, some fire from the ships caught on the ground and set fire to the old library. It is easy to believe as the wind continously blows in Alex from the sea, and the library was right next to it. Just like the location of the new one, which was opened a few years ago, and made an amazing impression on me. I knew before I went that I want to look at this modern building, but I didn't think I would be overwhelmed. It is a great architectural achievement, very well designed concept and very well carried out construction. It is right next to the University of Alex, so students can use it anytime. It is a little bit rare surrounded by the old houses of Alex and gives a feeling like it is totally out of this place, like a UFO just landed... A MUST while in Alex, I think! Costs EGP 10 for foreigners to enter. Leave a Comment Phone: +(203) 4839999Directions: Take tram to drop you in Shatby tram station. It is located by the Corniche, right next to the sea, on the Eastern end of the main Alexandria harbour.Website: http://www.bibalex.org Other Contact: For tours: visits@bibalex.org
