Over 30 years of excavation have uncovered many Roman remains including this well-preserved theatre with galleries, sections of mosaic-flooring, and marble seats for up to 800 spectators. In Ptolemaic times, this area was the Park of Pan and a pleasure garden. The theater at one point may had been roofed over to serve as an Odeon for musical performances. Inscriptions suggest that it was sometimes also used for wrestling contests. The theatre stood with thirteen semi-circular tiers of white marble that was imported from Europe. Its columns are of green marble imported from Asia Minor, and red granite imported from Aswan. The wings on either side of the stage are decorated with geometric mosaic paving. The dusty walls of the trenches, from digging in the northeast side of the Odeon, are layered with extraordinary amounts of potsherds. Going down out of the Kom, you can see the substantial arches and walls in stone, the brick of the Roman baths, and the remains of Roman houses.
The tombs of Kim El-Shouqafa were tunneled into the bedrock in the age of the Antonine emperors (2nd century A.D.)for a single wealthy family still practicing the ancient religion. As a privately financed project, it is an engineering feat of some magnitude. These tombs represent the last existing major construction for the sake of the old Egyptian religion. They are alone worth the trip to Alexandria. Though the funerary motifs are pure ancient Egyptian, the architects and artists were schooled in the Greco-Roman style. Applied to the themes of Ancient Egyptian religion, it has resulted in an amazing integrated art, quite unlike anything else in the world. Leave a Comment

Our grand-daughter of 3 was insistent about going on a horse, so we agreed with a hantour driver to take us from Saad zaghloul to Qait Bey for 10 LE. He was very friendly and pointed out places of interest. Before we reached Qait bey he said he'd take us to Ras el Teen and then Qait Bey. But when it came to paying the driver he refused the 20LE my husband offered and said as we had foreigners with us he expected a hundred LE. He was still shouting abuse when my husband gave him 25LE.
So don't allow any diversions to be made or you'll end up in a humiliating situation like we did.
Avoid being trapped into taking a hantour altogether, though when children are involved it is difficult to deny their wishes! Leave a Comment

Be aware of the tourist police ......sometimes. Most of the time they will leave you alone, but occasional these guys aren't "on the up and up". While visiting the catacombs, one of the tourist police offered to sell my friend some roman bones for 20 US dollars. While the thought of owning such an unusual souvenir might be tempting, you can get thrown in jail if you are caught with something like this. Not to mention, it's probably not authentic to begin with (although it was CLEARLY a HUMAN bone offered to my friend). Leave a Comment

Khawal, metnak, 2olla are different names for describing a homosexual man. If you are one then i have to warn you from the trap. You might find guys who pretend they are gays and will lead u to believe so till u r inside a room or so and they will start the blackmail game. They might rip you off of your money and still wont give you what you want.
Dont show you are a gay and wait till you know what's going on around.
Get to know the person very well before getting involved. Many murders happens around gay community in Egypt. Leave a Comment
