Panorama of the Pyramids by saraheg77 The pyramids are a site where my panorama camera came in handy! This is taken from a popular viewpoint where we began our camel trip down to the smallest of the three pyramids. It doesn't look like it from this angle, but the smallest is the one on the far right. The tallest is the one on the far left. Oh, and if this doesn't show the whole picture, be sure to CLICK on the PICTURE for the whole panorama picture.
All my memories of being at the pyramids are fond! I was just glad I had my trusty disposable panorama camera to try to capture some memories =) Don't leave for Egypt without a panorama camera!!! Leave a Comment

Mark looks so small! by saraheg77 Be sure and take a picture that shows the perspective of a person compared to the pyramids, so you can show how big they are!! :) Can you imagine how they could have built these by hand back in 2500 B.C?? This is Khafre's pyramid, the middle-sized of the three great pyramids. It was originally 471 feet (143.5 m) tall, now 446 feet (136 m) tall. It was built from 2558 to 2532 B.C. Leave a Comment

The Chins & Justin by saraheg77 If you take a camel ride with your fellow travelers, be sure to take lots of pictures of them, too, and get them to take pictures of you... then when you get home, you can email them to each other and you will have lots of pictures of your camel trip from different angles!! I was so glad to be able to send this picture to my fellow travelers and to receive some back of me on my camel trip!! Plus, this was easier than trying to get the camel driver to take a picture for you... then they might want a tip in return! :) Leave a Comment

The Old and the New... by kenmerk Its a strange sight when you first get a good look at the pyramids on the drive out to Giza. it looks like they are floating back there over the ouskirts of Cairo. As you can see, housing developments have crept right up to the edge of the Giza Plateau. Some say that with the rapid expansion of Cairo, someday they may actually be in the center of the city.... Pyramid of Mycerinus... by kenmerk Seeing the outside of the pyramids is really powerful. Going inside one of them is even better. Its not that there is so much to see inside the burial chamber, as most everything that wasnt tied down has long since been plundered. But, crawling down that narrow tunnel into the burial chamber, and entering a building that is more than 4500 years old is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Careful if you are claustaphobic, though, the tunnels are narrow, and can be crowded, especially if a whole class of 8 year old Egyptian kids are suddenly released into the entrance. (I know, I experienced this first hand in the Pyramid of Mycerinus....) Leave a Comment

Scarred Pyramid of Mycerinus by kenmerk The Pyramids of Giza are the oldest tourist attraction in the world, and the sole surviving member of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Though their outer casing of polished stone has been stripped away, and the burial treasures inside them robbed, they are still awe inspiring... Here you can see a deep scar on the north face of the Pyramid of Mycerinus, where attempts to dismantle the Pyramid failed... Leave a Comment

As the most people I believed that the Great Pyramids of Giza lie out in the desert. I was rather surprised when I looked out of the window of my Hotel which was situated in the center of Giza I saw the Pyramids right in front of the city area among the distant buildings. In fact they sit on the city limits of Greater Cairo because Giza is its suburb. And on the contrary, when you are walking around the Plateau of Giza among the Pyramids you may see Cairo and Giza on a distance. As I read in Michael’s page in 1970-80th it was possible to climb up the Pyramid and admire the Cairo scenery… Now you can’t do it unfortunately. I knew it before visiting the Plateau but was sorry having no opportunity to climb up even 20-30 meters… You may watch my VIDEO-Clip from my personal YouTube channel: 5 min 43 sec Egypt Giza Traveling around Plateau by bus 2007
You may watch my Giza Plateau high resolution photos on Google Earth in Giza according to the following coordinates 29º 58' 21.07" N 31º 7' 14.31" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Giza Plateau, Giza Plateau 2.

Pyramid Power... by kenmerk I saw a couple guys like this hanging around the Pyramids: Typically it would be an older white guy wearing tattered clothes and a long gray beard. They would be thumping on what looked to be a Bible, and just wild-eyed as can be chanting away in a tongues... Seemed to me like the powerful images of this place were maybe a bit much for someone with a frail sense of self. It is a powerful image to see something so grand which is over 4,500 years old towering above you... (the only real urge I had was to maybe sip on a beer to relieve the dry throat, tho'...) Giza or Gizah also sometimes rendered in English as Gizeh, is a city on the West bank of the Nile river, some 20 km southwest of central Cairo and now part of the greater Cairo metropolis. Its name is famous as the location of the Giza Plateau where the most impressive ancient monuments in the world, including the Great Sphinx, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and a number of other pyramids and temples are located. Giza was part of the ancient city of Memphis, which was inhabited as early as the Second Dynasty. Now its is a suburb of the giant city of Cairo with 5-millions of inhabitants. The modern city of Giza doesn’t look very pleasant: infinite high stores blocs of flats and dirty canals… But you are ready to forget it when you see the Pyramids!

by Guantanamera As you are exploring the Giza plateau, you can often look into the distance, scanning the desert region around the pyramids, and make out the tiny forms of people sitting on camels and horses... I'm not sure if this is for show or if they just hang out there... I zoomed in with my DV camera to get this shot... Leave a Comment
