I totally agree with Cindy, who warned of the riding stables at the Pyramids. However, I found this is mainly true for the stables directly at the entrance to the Sphynx and nearby. The further south from the pyramids you go, the better the stables get (Stand with your back to the Sphynx and walk to the right for at least 10-20 minutes). Thinking of AA, MG and Eurostables. Those are mainly livery stables, where the rich and expats keep their horses. If you still don't know if you are doing the right ethic thing, ask to have a look into the stables at the horses. If you don't like what you see, leave, until you find a better place. If you are being addressed by a tourist catcher for horseriding, go with them to see their stables. Sometimes they don't want you to follow or they already have a beautiful stallion saddled right in front of you, but sometimes it is their only 'good' horse and the rest that you also pay for, suffer. So please do go and have a look at the inside. Don't expect Western standards though, but you'll see the difference to the worse stables. For the tip to go with an Egyptian: some of them know the good stables, some of them don't. That counts for taxi drivers as well. Do not pay more than 20 EGP for the hour, guide will always be included at the good stables. And please wear proper shoes, no sandals. Oh, I always preferred the early morning hours; in summer I got their by 8am and rode for 2 hours. Sometimes it's foggy and you can't see the pyramids even though you know they are there. With every step that your horse takes the pyramids will appear slowly out of the fog, first hazily and then clearer and clearer. It is absolutely breathtaking. There is not a nicer way to start an Egyptian day.
You certainly don't need riding gear. But for your own safety and comfort, wear jeans and at least trainers, no sandals. Absolutely do not forget sunscreen lotion and a hat if you are going in the morning. If you go for more than one hour, take water with you, you can always ask your guide to keep it for you. Do yourself and the horses a favour, don't go out during midday in summer, from about 11am to 3pm. It is just too hot. Address: Cairo, Giza, The Pyramids

If you are a jogging addict then dont worry you can still keep up with your addiction. If you r staying for a month or more in Cairo then i reccommend that you visit 1 of 3 places ( Al Jazirah sporting club in Zamalek area, Markaz Shabab al Jazeerah in Zamalek also, Al Maadi sporting club). They are among the best sporting and social clubs in Egypt. You will need to pay them a visit and ask for the foreigners and expats short term membership. They have big tracks. If you r on a short term tour, then you can start your jogging as early as 5-6 am by the nile. You will avoid the crowds, enjoy the healthy air and most important you pay nothing.
Use your foot, lungs and heart. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: EGYPT

If you are planning to live in Cairo and want to know how you will keep your gym routine, don't worry. There are many gym facilities where you can buy a membership. I don't know the prices right off but they are fairly reasonable by American standards. There are also sport clubs which are similar to American country clubs. These are usually for Egyptians only but I know that a few will allow non-citizens to buy memberships. The memberships are usually pretty steep but these clubs are so worth it. They are usually huge with many gardens, coffee shops and restaurants. The sports offered vary but it is not unusual to find beautiful swimming pools, shooting galleries, track and field sports, soccer, and even horse riding at at least one. Honestly, I was so suprised because I just didn't expect to find places that rival our best country clubs in the USA. Sorry I can't give specific details but it is something to be aware of ...ask around. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

There are two long-established sporting clubs in Cairo: The Gezira Club in Zamalek; and the Shooting Club [nadi Said] in Dokki. Membership is expensive $1000 a year for a family. Guests can be signed in by members for 10 Egypt P, or 25 Ep at weekends. At the Shooting Club, for example, there are a number of facilities- football, tennis, softball, martial arts, walking track, swimming pool, clay pigeon shooting among others. Restaurants and cafes are scattered throughout the spacious grounds; there is a mosque, a children's playground with cages full of peacocks, guineafowl and a few other birds. The grounds are well landscaped and there are waterfeatures like fountains, artificial streams and waterfalls. lamps and arches are nicely decorated wrought iron. It is a pleasant place to spend time and the food is very cheap.
if participating in any of the sports it is best to have your own equipmwnt. For those using the walking track which is just over 900 metres long, you must wear suitable shoes [trainers]' Running on the track is not allowed. If you are a soccer fan then you have to know that Egypt is one of the champs and pioneers in this sport in Africa and the middle east. The best 2 teams are Al Ahly (its my team) and Al Zamalek. They keep sharing the 1st place. If you want to be cool and loved by many Egyptians then you can say Ana Ahlawi ( I am an Ahly fan).
a TV set or a ticket to see the games. Soccer tickets are very cheap here in Egypt and ranges from 1-10 US dollars. Dont expect to see players like Zeidan, Peckham or maradona. Leave a Comment Theme: Sports Watching
