  • I was much more impressed with its exterior although it has to be said that the main chambre was colourful and of a huge size. The lights that were hanged everywhere created a warm and peacful feeling. The floors were covered by mostly red carpets that added even more warmth to the place.
There is a gold-scalloped mihrab and two minbars of which one is very old and the other was given as a gift in 20th century.

  • Al-Nasir Mohammed Mosque - Cairo

It stands just across from the Mohammed Ali Mosque and is an example of Mameluke architecture at its very finest. It was completed in 1335 and was once the principle Mosque within the Citadel. It has two entrances. One was used by the soldiers and the other only by Sultan himself. The courtyard is the story for itself, featuring the columns so different in the style and the origin-pharaonic, Roman, Byzantine ...The green dome of the Mosque is the largest made from that material ( I forgot what material it was ).

  • The Citadel is a very large walled medieval fortress that was built to defend the city and it was for 700 years the strategic point of Cairo. It was more than a fortress alone, as two residential areas were added as well as a few mosque of which are the most famous Muhammed Ali and Al-Nasir Mosques. As the Citadel is located at the top of a hill so much of Cairo can be seen from the edge of the Citadel walls.
No need to mention that it is one of the most visited sights in Cairo, both from tourists and the locals.

Citadel: The Clock Tower at the Mosque courtyard

  • The courtyard of the Mosque is marbeled with the turkish Baroque fountain in the middle. I found somewhere that it looks like a giant Easter egg and when I actually saw it, I had to agree that it was a good description.
The story of the Clock Tower is well known. It was the gift from Louis Philippe in exchange for the obelisk (I wrote about that in my Luxor page) that stands in the Concorde square in Paris. The clock never worked.

Citadel: Overlooking the city of Cairo...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Overlooking the city of Cairo is the marble Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Located within the Citadel, the Mosque is one of the most beautiful in Cairo, a city with over 500 Mosques. The Mosque named after by Mohammad Ali Pasha, ruler of Egypt, was built from 1830-1857. The Mosque was designed by the Greek architect Yussuf Bushnaq.

Citadel: The Citadel and Mosque of Mohammed Ali
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Citadel is situated on the top a small hill, overlooking the skyline of Cairo. The most outstanding architecture in the Citadel is the Mosque of Mohammed Ali. There is also a National Militiary Muesum inside the Citedal with separate entrance fee 20 EGP (May 2006).

Entrance to the Citadel is 35 EGP (May 2006) and is located the other side of the Citadel. You can take taxi from Mosque of Sultan Hassan from the foot. Please note it is a long walk, about 15-20 minutes if you decide to walk.

It's one of those historic parks as well as Museums u don't want to miss, when u walk in u feel history surrounding you,,

The architecture of the Citadel, in eastern Cairo, enhances the city's skyline. Constructed by Salah Al-Din ( Saladin) in 1176 and modified and expanded by later sultans, the Citadel is famous for its forts mosques, and museums, within the complex the Mohammad Ali Pasha Mosque (1830) is distinct, with its storied domes and twin minarets.
