Coptic Cairo: Coptic Church on the River Nile
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is a little Coptic Church on the River Nile at Maadi which is fascinating. You can have guided tours or just go for a look or a prayer if you wish. Some very interesting artefacts there and it is said that it is the spot where Moses landed in Egypt and also where Joseph Mary and Jesus fled to, to escape the invading Romans.

I have the name, address and telephone number plus some photos of this most interesting place, but as I have just recently moved house I will need to unpack a bit more before I can update the posting information here.

  • Built by the Romans 2100 years ago, it is called Al Muallaka (the hanging) because it was built up on ruins of two old towers left from the old fortress of Babylon. It was a Roman Temple converted to Roman Church and later to a Coptic Church. The church was dedicated to The Virgin Mary.
One of its numerous names also is a “staircase church” as about 30 stairs lead to the main entrance.
The interior is simply wonderful. The wooden dome, the frescos and a marble are combined to create unrepeatable impression.

Coptic Cairo: Greek Orthodox Church of St George (Mar Girgis)
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the few rounded churches in the Middle East, the Greek Orthodox Church of St George owes its shape to the fact that it was built on one of the round towers of the Roman wall of the Fort of Babylon. The current structure was built only in 1909 to replaced a previous ancient church following a devastating fire in 1905. Although rebuilt several times during its history, the original church was built on this site in the 7th century. It was a Coptic church in its early days, but has been Greek Orthodox since the 15th century.

Also referred to as Qasriyet el Rihan (Basil Pot), this Coptic church is believed to be located where the Holy Family had spent time and drank water from a well. While a church existed here since the 9th century, the current edifice is recent.

    Coptic Cairo: The Coptic Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Built in 1910, the Coptic museum displays artefacts and historical objects from Coptic Egypt. Although often overlooked, Coptic Christianity has been and continues to be of great importance to Egypt and its culture. The museum is located in the heart of Coptic Cairo, among a mosaic of historic churches.

Coptic Cairo: Church of Abu Sarga (St Sergius & Bacchus)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cairo's oldest, the Church of Abu Serga was first built in the 4th century AD on the spot where the Holy Family is thought to have rested during their journey in Egypt. Following damage in the 8th century, the church was rebuilt, and was subsequently restored several times over time. It is located in Coptic Cairo, among several other churches in this Christian stronghold and is typical of Coptic church architecture with some motifs that could be mistaken for a mosque. The columns of the church may have been borrowed from earlier Roman buildings.

    Coptic Cairo: Ben Ezra Synagogue
  • Tip Rating:
  • The sole synagogue in Coptic Cairo is said to have been built on the spot where Pharaoh's daughter found Moses. Although this theory goes back thousands of years, the Synagogue itself is less ancient. An older church existed until the 9th century when the Jewish community bought it from the Christians and turned it into a synagogue. It is unknown how much of the original church survived, but at least the floor plan did. Architecturally, the synagogue is an intriguing a mix of Jewish, Christian and Islamic styles. The Ben Ezra synagogue is also where the famous 11th century manuscripts, referred to as the Geniza, were found. Note that photography is forbidden in the interior (I had to snap quickly!).
