We paid for a personal guide here; expensive but worth it, although I felt a bit uncomfortable when he shued people away from exhibits so we could see. He was very knowledgeable (a professor earning some extra apparently).

The number of truly impressive exhibits was amazing (although I will be going to the British musuem in London, they seem to have 'acquired' many impressive pieces which should have been here - also from Athens too)

I thought the Mummy room was worth the extra too.

The air conditioning was very welcome in August!

Egyptian Museum: Egyptian Museum - avoid the crowds
We went with an organised group, which was timed to arrive at the Museum at about 9.00 a.m., the same time as practically every other group. If you are travelling alone, try arriving later in the morning when the crowds have subsided.

The Tutankhamun exhibits are a must-see, but be prepared for the crowds. Having fought your way in to see them, you can relax and explore the rest of the museum at leisure.

When you're in Cairo the 1st thing you see is the Pyramids of Giza. The 2nd is the Eqyptian Museum. If you're into artifacts, you can lose yourself in here for many hours. If you simply just want a taste of all the major artifacts, including the treasures of Tutankhamun, the 3-4 hours is enough.
The museum itself is quite a mess. There is no order to things. It looks like a place that has ran out of places to display their treasures and everything is stuffed into every available crack and corner. There are over 120, 000 relics and antiquities stored here. There are plans for a newer and bigger Museum close to the Pyramids of Giza to be finished by 2009.
Dispite the haphazard and disorganized nature of the museum there is a charm to its eccentricity, and the fun is just letting yourself wander and stumble onto half hidden & unexpected treasures.

Egyptian Museum: The Royal Mummies Hall
Similar mummies are on display - Cairo

While walking around the second floor of the Egyptian Museum you can easily find The Royal Mummies Hall, it is right next to the stairs on the right side (if you stand in front of the Museum).

The Mummies are very interesting, they date back to 3000-4000 years, and you can still see the skin, the clothes and many other parts of them as it was when they died! It is a strange feeling to walk around these bodies and try to imagine the time that passed by while they were already dead and soul-less.

On the other hand when we were there (October 2005) there were only 9 mummies if I remember correctly, and several empty places under the glass boxes. I believe the others were on a road-show or something like that.

The whole thing is only one room (some tour-books refer to two rooms...), so don't expect hundreds of mummies, but it is still worth the money I think, especially if you can get the half-price student discount. As they have a separate cashier from the general Museum cashier, they had problems with the change of EGP 5, so I suggest you to have the exact change. Sometimes there is a que as well, which can be up to 10-15 minutes of wait...

NO PHOTOGRAPHY here either (buy you already left your camera outside before entering the museum itself...)

An additional EGP 70 to enter (EGP 35 for students) on top of the normal museum ticket.

    Egyptian Museum: Artifacts from pharaohs
You can spend hours in this museum gazing at the beautiful artifacts which used to belong to pharaohs. Royal mummy room is a must see. The room is heat and humidity controlled to keep the mummies undamaged. It is not allowed to take photos in this room.

    Egyptian Museum: Egyptian Museum
You could practically spent the whole day at the museum. If you are running short of time, go directly to the Tutankhamon collection area (awesome collections) and the mummies room (you have to pay additional fee at the entrance of the mummies area to access the room). Audio tour is available for rent at the entrance of the museum.

You will need to have your bag scanned and empty your pockets before you enter through the museum's gates. You may be patted down as well.

No cameras are allowed, you can check it (or your entire bag) when you get past the gates. The camera check booth and the ticket booth straddle the entry gate. We weren't charged to check our camera.

Once inside the museum, go straight to the second floor to see Tutankhaemen's displays. From the second floor, you can also look down from the rotundas into the first floor and get a view of the large statues.

Entry is 40LE. To get into the Mummy Room is another 70LE. There are plenty of mummies on the second floor though if you don't wish to pay the extra.
