  • Egyptian Museum is definitely a must once in Cairo, here you will see a lot of stuff coming from the phara-era and the super beautifull TUT AN KHAMON! (sorry it is written wrong...)..
The collection of objects is amazing, big and will take your breath away!
Be sure to come here early in the morning as arnd 10 ocklock are ocming the touristic groups and will be hard to enjoy the athmnosphere on your own!
I suggest you to hire a guiode for the museum, otherwise you will lose a lot of details!!!
    The entry fee is 40L.E.

At the north end of Maydan Tahrir is a huge neoclassical building that houses the world's largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts. With more than 100,000 items in total, it is said that if you were to spend just one minute on each item, it would take over nine months to complete the tour. Needless to say, you need to be selective, and it's a good idea to hire a museum guide or buy the comprehensive and practical Egyptian Museum in Cairo: Official Catalogue (Łe100). The famous Tutankhamun collection is on the museum's upper floor; look for its beautiful gold funerary mask and sarcophagus, ancient trumpet, thrones, the four huge gilded boxes that fit one inside the other, and a royal toilet seat to boot. Also upstairs is the royal Mummy Room, which houses 11 pharaonic dignitaries. If you are discouraged by the Mummy Room's steep entrance fee, don't miss the assortment of mummified animals and birds in the adjacent room, which has no additional charge. COST: Łe20; Mummy Room Łe40; additional Łe10 to use your camera and Łe100 to use your video recorder. OPEN: Daily 9-4:30.

    Outer Coffin of King Tut....

The centerpiece of the Cairo Museum is undoubtedly the rooms containing the wealth of treasures from the tomb of King Tutankhamun. The inner coffin by itself is 110 kilograms of pure gold !!!

Tut is famous because his tomb is the only one that has been discovered intact... Actually he was not one of the more prolific Egyptian kings... (died early, didn't build much during his reign...)

Just image what the tomb of a major King like Ramses II might have looked like...

The Egyptian museum is an amazing place. It was built in 1902 and is one of the most famous museums in the world. It houses 250,000 antique pieces, the highlight is to see the treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun what a sight. The museum is so big you cant see everything it would take months, the best thing is to buy a guide and go from there. There was no air conditioing either so take plenty of water.

  • The imposing building of the Egyptian Museum hosts the most important and grandiose collection of Egyptian art in the world, more than 100.000 antiquities and relics from nearly every period.
When you visit the museum, you have to make choices. To see all will take months.
I visited the museum several times and discovered every time new things. All the times I visited the treasuries of Tutankhamun, because of its decorations and colours. It's worth to buy a book, then you can be surprised later again about what you saw.

There are also other museums in Cairo.
The last time we visited the Museum of modern Egyptian art near the Opera house, it ws a really tranquil place after the crowds of Midan El Tahrir.

Egyptian Museum: In urgent need of a new building
  • Tip Rating:
  • The marvellous treasures of this museum would merit an other sorts of presentation. One excuse might be that this about 100 years old building is much too small for that what it contains but since tourism is one of the most important sources of income for Egypt and most visitors are coming to see the treasures of ancient Egypt they should give this rather big investment a priority.

But it is not only the lack of space, also other aspects of the presentation can only be critizised. For pictures of the exhibits see the travelogue

  • The Cairo Museum contains the world's most impressive collection of ancient Egyptian art. The beautiful edifice itself, designed by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon, was built in 1903, during Cairo's Belle Epoque, as a showcase of Ancient Egyptian heritage. The sizeable museum is incredibly crammed with objects and artefacts, yet those on display represent less than half of the entire collection. Thus there are plans to relocate the museum to a new larger building near the Pyramids in the near future. Not to be missed are the Mummy Room (extra fee necessary) Tutankhamun's Treasures, and the Portraits of Fayyum. Note that photography is not permitted inside the museum.
