  • A wealth of ancient treasures are to be found at the Cairo Museum. (when it is not closed and/or crowded that is) Room after room of beautiful artifacts from the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms of Egypt...

If you add all that is here to all the Egyptian articles that fill other museums around the world, you can get a pretty good idea how prolific and advanced this ancient society was... (an absolute Must-see in Cairo)

Egyptian Museum: the place of eternal values
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cairo's Museum contains 100 halls and if you want to explore them all, it will take you a month since 9am till 5pm without weekends and breaks for a snack:)))))))
Ofcourse the museum made a certain impression on me, I had heard so much about it at school history lessons and would never imagine that one day I would happen near its doors:))))))
The Museum was terribly crowded with tourists from all over the world, so we did nothing but galloping after our guide around the place:)))))))
Bust still we DID see the mask of Tutankhamon! We DID IT!

  • The Egyptian Museum is conviently located near the Nile and the Nile Hilton. It was first established by the Egytian Goverment in 1835. The recent building was built in 1900 and houses now more than 120000 objects from the prehistoric era to greco-roman time.

Most famous exhibition is the one about Tut Anch Amen, the young pharao, whose rich tomb was discovered by Howard Charter in the beginnjing of the 20th century.

Egyptian Museum: Egyptian museum- visit before it moves
  • Tip Rating:
  • Founded in 1838 to house objects from the world's richest monumental culture. The present museum building was built in 1900, in the neo-classical style by the French Architect Marcel Dourgnon. The museum is now a monument in itself. The collection has far outgrown the building and foundation have been laid for a new museum near the pyramids, which is due to open in 2015, so take the opportunity to see this treasure trove in its neoclassical home.

Don't miss to see the famous Pharaoh Tutankhamen collection & the gold coffin on the museum's upper floor. Tutankhamen tomb in the valley of the Kings was found by Howard Carter in 1923.

The museum sits on the edge of Tahrir Square, the hub from which the 19th century downtown district radiates out on Parisian-style boulevards. Heat, dust and noise diminish the square's appeal, but the Nile-Hitlon, next door, retains a cool 1950s elegance. It provides an ideal plce for a post-museum stop on the roof top Pyramids Bar, one of Cairo's best addresses.

  • The Egyptian Museum is an amazing place to visit!!!! It is full of statues, mummies and other old Egyptian things... ;) And of course it is home to Tutankhamun's mask and his other gold/jewellery. We only had a few hours at the museum but you could easily spend a full day or even a full week looking through this place...unfortuantely we ran out of time to go back for a second look.

It costed 40 LE to get into the Egyptian Museums...

If you plan to go along then make sure you get there as early as possible...the huge crowds seem to turn up around 11 am and by then the museum is so full you can hardly move...

  • Even though you´re not a big fan of museums - this one is still a must. You don´t have to spend hours in there - if you have a guide to highlight the most interesting sights you´re best off.
Especially if it explains you about what it is you´re seeing.
Lonely Planet is a good choise.

Most of the items are porely displayed - but a new section is being build - see Tut´s rooms.

  • The Egyptian Museum is fairly large and, realistically, contains more than can be taken in in one visit. Of course it all depends on how into ancient Egypt you are, (I'm not particularly) but it's worth more than one visit.

My first tip would be to save the Tutankhamun treasure for a second visit. And I would make that visit first thing in the morning. That way you can make straight for King Tut, & actually get a chance to see the stuff at your own pace. What most tours do (and it make absolute sense to do this) is to do the main galleries in historical order and finish with Tutankhamun. By the time the museum has been open an hour you have to shuffle slowly past the exhibits in a snake of tourist: no lingering over what especially takes you, no nipping back to compare objects. Totally unsatisfactory unless you are just list-ticking.

My favorite display in the museum is the room devoted to ostraca (flakes of limestone used for rough sketches, doodles, shopping lists, whatever): a glimpse of of the everyday from four thousand years ago: although the predynasic exhibits are wonderful as well.

It is worth knowing that your admission ticket is good for the whole day and they allow re-admission. So you can spurn the vastly expensive (7 LE for a small water? bi-KAM??) facilities on-site & take lunch somewher else if you want to make a day of it. It's worth it.

  • Egyptian Museum – it’s great collection of Pharaonic antiquities and, of course, the name of Auguste Mariette – the first director of “The Egyptian Service des Antiquites” – he founded the Egyptian Museum. Museum was established in 1858, but building which we know now as Egyptian Museum was opened in 1902.
The collection is SO big (there are about 150 000 antiquities), that with these 1,5 hours which tourists (groups) usually spent here are not enough. Guides only try to show the most popular things...
So, better come here by yourself and slowly go through Museum’s halls!

    Entrance: 20,-LE (students 10,-LE)
    Mummies room 40,-LE
    Photo (without flash) 10,-LE,
    Video 100, LE
    Open: 9:00 – 16:30

    Tutankhamun’s funerary mask

Of course, all tourists like to see the treasures of Tutankhamun. :-) which were recovered from his tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor.
At room Nr.8 you can see four chests made of wood and covered with gold. These chests were originally one inside the other and ihe inner one contained Tutankhamun’s stone sarcophagus.
Rooms Nr.3 and Nr.4 – there you can see all gold jewelleries (about 110 kg!!!) and of course – the famous Tutankhamun’s funerary golden mask.
And for all these beautiful things we must say thanks to Howard Carter who after many years searching founded the tomb of the young-king Tutankhamun. This great day was - the 4th of November in 1922.
