Here we have some ornate tomb decorations of a long departed Pharaoh on display at the Cairo Museum. (Cant remember which one...)

Depicted on the walls are the many necessities that the Great King would need in the after life.... and most prominently displayed, and in the greatest abundance are those tall rounded vessels, which are said to contain the pharaoh's after life beer....

Indeed how wise these ancient Monarchs proved themselves to be....

  • The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, in Cairo, Egypt, is home to the most extensive collection of pharaonic antiquities in the world. It has 136,000 items on display, with many more hundreds of thousands in its basement storerooms.
The museum is an outgrowth of the Egyptian Antiquities Service, established by the Egyptian government in 1835, in an attempt to limit the looting of antiquities from sites, and protect artifacts. Its museum opened in 1858 with a collection assembled by Auguste Mariette, the French archaeologist retained by Isma'il Pasha. After residing in an annex of the palace of Isma'il Pasha in Giza from 1880, the museum moved to its present location, a neoclassical structure on Tahrir Square in Cairo's city centre, in 1900.
The highlight of the collection is often considered to be the tomb artifacts of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun, whose almost intact tomb Howard Carter found in the Valley of the Kings in 1922.
The museum's Royal Mummy Room, containing 27 royal mummies from pharaonic times, was closed down on the orders of President Anwar Sadat in 1981. It was reopened, with a slightly curtailed display of New Kingdom kings and queens, in 1985.

The original building built by the French still houses the world's greatest collection of Egyptian art. The Europeans (particularly the French and British) and Americans have some real gems, but the volume of items on display and warehoused at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is staggering and shouldn't be missed. Expect to spend about two hours. Cameras are allowed for a fee, which I found reasonable because the museum gift shop slides are generally of poor quality. The entrance area has changed for security reasons. At the time my Aunt and Uncle visited in 1962, the bus pulled right up to the garden and one walked to the building before paying an entrance fee. Since then layers of fencing, an exterior booth for ticket purchase, and additional parking lot security has been added, and even after our visit in 1997 additiional security was been added due to the bombing of a German tour bus in the parking lot. The following tips will provide details about the museum content at the time I visited, but note the marvelous garden exhibit featuring antiquities that would be prized by any museum in the world for an indoor display.

    Egyptian Museum: The Royal Humiditor
  • Tip Rating:
  • The other Must-See area in the museum is the Royal Mummy room. To enter this area, you must pay a surcharge (40 EP maybe ???), and no pictures are allowed inside... (its on the second floor in the front of the building)

The old Kings area really something to see, though.... Though he had been resting for over 3000 years, you half-expect Ramses the Great to jump up and start building some more temples to honour himself....

Dont miss this when you visit the museum...

  • The greatest collection of Egyptian antiquities is, without doubt, that of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. It is a place of true discovery and, even after many visits, I continue to make new and delightful discoveries every time I venture into its many galleries.
To be sure, the museum can be daunting in the sheer numbers of its antiquities on show, but there is an order within its layout and it is a dream come true for anyone wanting to study Egyptian antiquities.

However, the negative side is that the environmental and display conditions leave a great deal to be desired. Labels on some exhibits date from early in the century and many items have no labels at all. Guidebooks are available at the museum, although they are limited to some of the major items.

The museum's ground floor follows the history of ancient Egypt. Upon entering through the security check in the building, one looks toward the atrium and the rear of the building with many items on view - from sarcophagi and boats to enormous statues.
Just in front of these you will find an Object of the Month on display. Behind it are some of the most important items from the time of the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt some 5,000 years ago, including the famous slate palette of king Narmer - one of the first documents of Egyptian history. Also on show are small masterpieces of sculpture - keep in mind that these are some 50 centuries old. This is an area that should not be missed!

Continuing around the building in a clockwise direction takes you forward in time as you duck into the different rooms. At the far end of the building you will be confronted by material from the time of the heretic pharaoh, Akhenaten.

Keep moving and eventually you will have reached the Graeco-Roman period and walked through more than 3,000 years of history!

Egyptian Museum: Museum of Egyptian Antiquities
  • Tip Rating:
  • What can you say about the Egyptian Museum? It is without doubt one of the wrold's greatest but at the same time one of the most frustrating. I think it is Lonely Planet which indicated that if you allowed one minute to see each of the exhibits on public display. it would still take you 9 months to see everything!

Founded in 1858, the collection has long outgrown its present site - apparently there are so many exhibits carefully crated in the basement that new excavations are necessary as the crates have sunk into the soft ground below the building. It really is impossible to take it all in and sadly many give it little more than a cursory glance on their way to the Tutankamen rooms - the only part of the Museum which has been modernised with contemporary lighting and hunidity control. They certainly are spectacular and the warehouse style display of the rest of the museum pales into insignificance in comparison. But it's so worth taking your time and try not to 'do it all' in one go. If you have time, make several visits. Alternatively. plan your route so you can get a broad spectrum of what is on offer. As so much of the display is dependent on natural light, leave the Tutankamen rooms until the end of your visit.

And please respect the no flash photography policy - many of the guards will turn a blind eye, but you'll be adding to the slow disintegration of the relics.

    Open Mon-Thurs & Sat-Sun, 9am - 4.30pm, Fri 9am-11.30am & 1.30-4.30pm (and get there early as the numbers are controlled)

Egyptian Museum, is the first place to visit especially when is your first visit to Cairo or even Egypt! I highly recommend this.

    Reasons :

    1. Is like short summary before going to major sights, easier to absorb and link of those places that you will eventually visit eg: The Giza Pyramids. Better than touring around the sights like headless chicken.

    2. Even you have visited British Museum and read so much details about egyptian ancient history, visiting the museum will be another experience and you actually see the true artifact in front of your eyes! eg. Tutakhamun famous collection.

    3. Is the best Egyptian collection of all world.

  • Things to know about entry to Egyptian Museum:

    1. Whichever websites you may have visited and thinking of depending on that details, please forget about it! Especillay the Egyptian museum main website is not updated. They keep changing their details.

Of course for those have ISIC card will get a discounted ticket.

    2. New regulation of year 2006, photography are prohibited, so make sure you dont sneak in your wonderful and expensive camera thinking that nobody will knows, in fact when you comes to entrance hall, everybody will be scan and check all your bags. So if you dont want to be stop make sure follow my tips.

Few occassion, tourist caught taking picture with their mobile phones end up got kick out of the museum. CCTV around and security are very tight. At least show some respect on the ancient egyptian collection.

You may store you camera at Storage booth just withing the Egyptian Museum courtyard, no fees and you'll collect a chip as verification.

    3. Crowded!!! so early morning trip tp the museum is highly recommended, otherwise you end up like sardines on your way in.

Best thing when we took our kids,,my 7 years old daughter shouted"MOM LOOK.....THE PRINCE OF EGYPT!!!!"

This museum at Cairo has over 120000 items – in fact so many that it cannot display them all at any one time. When I was there it was the old museum before the modern structure was built. At that time many of the exhibits were poorly displayed and the museum was always crowded. However, it was still amazing to actually view the ancient treasures and to marvel at the detailed craftsmanship.
The mummy collection is vast and includes many famous names from the 18th to 20th dynasties Ramses (I , II, III, IV, V, VI), Tuthmosis (I,II,III), Seti (I, II) and Amenhotep (I,II, III) among others.
The museum was built in 1900 by French Architect Marcel Dourgnon to house the collections that were once held in the Azbakian Garden in Cairo !
There is a small charge for cameras and further charges for video equipment. There is also an additional charge into the Mummies rooms.
