Gizeh Pyramids: The Great Pyramid of Cheops

  • This grandiose pyramid has been built between 2589 - 2566 BC. For its construction 2,300,000 blocks of stone with an average weight of 2.5 tons each were needed. The height of the pyramid is 140m. It is the oldest and the largest Pyramid at Giza.
Even today it would be a very hard work to build it, so the mistery of how it was built in those times stays unsolved. Although the different theories about that exist, it is hard to belive in any of them.

  • What an impressive half-human, half-lion creature. The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the largest statues on Earth made from the single stone. In this case it was a limestone from which this giant was created. it is 20 m high and about 60 m long. The most egyptologist agree that it was built somewhere an the middle of 3rd century BC.

To see one of the wonders of the world in person...one must be prepared! I suggest you try to visit the pyramids on a weekday that does not happen to be a holiday, and to go there early on in the morning, or at sunset...so that you are not too hot to enjoy their magnificance..and it is not too over-crowded that you suffocate.

Be amazed by their size and exterior...take a camel ride around the place (but be sure to ask for a lower price), and go into one of the pyramids and try climbing up to one of the closed chambers within...(its too bad i couldn't Im not too good with tight places) :-(

    Gizeh Pyramids: Budget tip
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're on a budget AND are also going to visit Saqqara, apart from Giza, then save your LE 25 for going into the pyramid at Giza and instead enter Titi's pyramid at Saqqara. The burial chamber there is beautifully engraved with countless five-pointed stars and all you'll pay is a tip to your liking to the guy at the entrance. This part of the grounds of Saqqara by the way one can enter free of charge: when approaching the site you will see a ticket office - there is no requirement to stop and buy a ticket: only if you want to visit the Saqqara "staircase" pyramid you will be asked to show your ticket, the rest of the grounds (the part to the right at the T-junction) can be visited for free and include nice temples as well as Titi's pyramid mentioned above.

    Gizeh Pyramids: The Sphinx
  • Tip Rating:
  • Now this does live up to expectations. Part of the same site as the Pyramids of Giza, its age is controversial and has caused enormous atrguments among Egyptologists. Sadly it is badly affected by erosion (carved out of limestone), being used as target practice by Napoloeonic troops, 19th century British imperialism and the demands of the British Museum as well as poor modern worksmanship on early renovations. But it is a magnificent sight, resting proudly in the desert, a symbol of royalty and power.

Gizeh Pyramids: The Pyramids of Giza
  • Tip Rating:
  • The only remaining one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world and as such are burdened with exoticism and expectation. And as such, they are mildly disappointing. Impressive - yes. But with the hoardes of hawkers, the cacophony of bus-bound tourists, the site does not live up to expectation.
But at 4500 years old they are quite an extraordinary sight. And if you're not claustrophobic, a trip inside the The Great Pyramid is an option (not included in the general entry ticket).

The best clear view to be had of the three pyramids is to the east. Its quite a schlep - pass along the road between the Pyramid of Cheops and Chephren and keep walking! You'll decide when you've had enough -:) At least you'll get away from the crowds and hawkers - only those with transport seem to make this trip!

Gizeh Pyramids: The Sphinx Burial Grounds
  • Tip Rating:
  • To the left (as you look head on) of The Sphinx is extensive burial grounds for lesser royalty and important courtiers and the site of Chephren's Valley Temple. Much of it is made up of small tombs hewn into the rock. Few people visit this area, so its one area to escape the crowds within the Pryamids site. And, meandering through the narrow alleyways and peering into the open tombs provides a sense of exploration and adventure, although you're always 'overlooked' by the pyramids. With the beginnings of the desert receding into the distance, there are moments when you realise how isolated the site once was, although in the near distance there is also the more 'modern' Muslim cemetery.

    Gizeh Pyramids: Satisfaction
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you see pyramids, you have some strange feeling. You are too small, spiritually and natural. But, you are happy you see them in live. Look at Ceca's and Nina's smile. They are too satisfied even if we went in the rooms in 3 AM (after our flight) and woke up in 9 AM.

    Gizeh Pyramids: Khafre's Pyramid
  • Tip Rating:
  • That's the one in the middle, and my favourite!! They only open one of the 3 each day to tourists. Admission is acceptable, though frankly there's nothing to see except an empty sarcophagus since the grave robbers got there before us thousands of years ago (sneaked a few shots even though you can't bring cameras in). The interior is cramped and humid (thanks to us, the hordes of tourists) but the climb through the passageways are alright.

Whole journey in and out will only take a maximum of 10 minutes.

    Gizeh Pyramids: The Great Pyramid
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Giza necropolis consists of the 3 main pyramids that of Khufu (Great Pyramid), Khafre and smaller Menakaure, together with some small satellite edifices, known as "queens" pyramids, and the Great Sphinx. The Pyramids were constructed approximately 2500 BC. The Great Pyramid is approximately 147 metres high and for nearly two and half thousand years was the tallest structure in the world until the Lincoln Cathederal spire was constructed. The Pyramid was originally covered with Limestone that was highly polished and gave a smooth exterior to the structure. This allowed light to be reflected off the pyramid and as a result it could be seen up to 300 kilometres away form the mountains of souther Egypt. Unfortunately this outer casing has been removed, primarily to rebuild Cairo after a large earthquake in the middle of the 14th centuary. Some remnants of the Limestone casing remain at the very top of the pyramid.

The workmanship on each of the stones put in place to form the pyramid is truly remarkable and the precision with which they were laid is unbelievable to the point that even today it is difficult to fit more than a small blade beteen the joins. Each stone weighs approx 3 tonnes on average and the combined mass is estiametd at 6 Million Tonnes. How they got these massive stones in place is yet another mystery and one that has many theories including the use of wind sails to aid lifting the heavy stones into place. Many have suggested that ramps were built to roll the stones into position but the amount of material required to build the ramps would have been as much if not more than the pyramid itself and evidence does not exisit of this material. One theory indicates that the stones were cast in situ like a form of early concrete mixing. There is plenty to keep the scholars and VT’ers guessing for centuaries to come.
