Gizeh Pyramids: Stunning Wonder
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is no sense in trying to describe the sheer size of the world's oldest construction. See those three specks at the base of the pyramid on the rightin the picture? Those are holes on a rock face that a man could easily walk into. I'm estimating Khafre's pyramid to be about 32 stories high, though others put it closer to 50 stories. But even after getting the figures right, how do you describe the unparalleled wonder of standing before the pyramids yourself?

They're just one of those things in life better left to speak for themselves, for a traveller can return with stories and words to share but never the euphoria of humbled awe.

    Gizeh Pyramids: The Great Pyramids
  • Tip Rating:
  • First time when I saw them I had 10 years. I even didn't start to learn history in the school. For me, it was something that my parents wanted to see.
Now, when I saw them from the bus, it was something I couldn't believe exist.

    Gizeh Pyramids: Inside The Pyramid
  • Tip Rating:
  • Should you decide to descend inside the pyramid, you'll have to take a narrow, steep tunnel like this, where the air is very fusty, and there is little space to "crawl" down... But it is very exciting, and at the end there is a chamber inside the pyramid which is enchanting!

Gizeh Pyramids: The Pyramids of Giza ...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Pyramids of Giza

. . . . .I tried to imagine my first visit to the pyramids of Giza, convincing myself it would be 'no big deal'. After all, I live in the modern world and I have seen some of the tallest buildings ever built. I have even visited ancient pyramids in Mexico and modern ones in Memphis, TN and Las Vegas, NV. But I can safely say that I will never forget the first time that I saw the pyramids of Giza, their size and age actually took my breath away. The ancient Egyptians built these tombs to last for eternity. In my opinion they have succeeded, I can't imagine them ever crumbling. These huge monuments are the only 'Wonders of the Ancient World' still standing. An old Arab saying states that: 'Man fears time... time fears the pyramids'.

. . . . .The pyramid on the left is the tallest and greatest pyramid ever built. It originally stood 482 feet high. It has lost 33 feet to the removal of its apex. It is made up of 2.5 million limestone blocks, each weighing about 2.5 tons. It was built in the Old Kingdom during the 4th Dynasty around 2500 BC. It belongs to the pharaoh Cheops, sometimes known as Khufu. This huge tomb remained the tallest building in the world for more then 3000 years. It was already about 2000 years old when the ancient Greeks marveled at its beauty and perfection.

. . . . .The center pyramid belongs to the son of Cheops, the Pharaoh Khafre, sometimes called Chephren. It stands 446 feet, originally 470 feet. Khafre built his pyramid shorter, out of respect for his father. But he cleverly built it on a higher part of the plateau, this makes his pyramid appear to be the tallest at Giza.

. . . . .The pyramid on the right belongs to the pharaoh Menkaure. It stands only about 215 feet high, not even half the height of the 'Great Pyramid'. In the distance is the modern city of Cairo, which now sprawls to the very edge of the Giza Plateau.

  • The only remaining monuments of 7 wonders of the world. They are situated about 25 km from Cairo center. The most famous are Great ( Cheops ), Chephren andMykerinus pyramids. The Great Sphinx is not to be missed too.
I can't describe the feelings when I first saw them in the distance, it just have to be experianced.

    Gizeh Pyramids: 1-Pyramids
  • Tip Rating:
  • Of course Pyramids are the key of Cairo and Egypt at all,Riding horses and camels is something you shouldnt miss while you are here.

You can go to Pyramids by Cairo airconditioned bus or taxi.,The bus ticket is for 2 pounds only and the taxi fees is depend on from where you took it.,but be sure that the price is always negotiatable to the half in some cases.,its better to ask first how much to pay from location X to location Y so you know in advance better than getting ripped off.

Its recommended to go there early in the morning because the sun will hurt your skin in the mid of the day,and you should wear a hat.

The most important thing I should tell you about is the price of riding a horse or a camel, unfortunly I will say if you dont know the real price so for sure you will get ripped off.
The actual price is from 35-50 pounds for the long trip "You will see the 9 pyramids from the top view ,takes about 2 hours" if you didnt see those so this is not the long one.
The price may increase or decrease a bit but now you know the range.

The horse man will ask you for 200-300 pounds and will start negotiate with you.,you pay only whats near the avarage or little bit more,he will not agree fo sure, tell him this is what you will pay or you will call the police, you will find him agreed to take what you offerred :)

    Pyramids entrance fees:
    20L.E Adults "about 3 Euros"
    10L.E Students "about 1.5 Euros"

    Openning time : 8am till 5 pm

Gizeh Pyramids: Riddle of the Sphinx (2)
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the mysteries of the Sphinx is the missing nose. Popular myth (and one told to us by our tour guide in all seriousness) was that Napolean's forces used it as target practice for their canons and that as a result the nose was blow off. However sketches by FL Norden dating from 1737 show the Sphinx with no nose and as this predates the Napoleonic canons at the site it suggests the nose was missing from an earlier time. Marks on the face suggest that it was leveraged off sometime between removed between 1000 and 1500 AD. One possible explantion is that it was removed by the Turks as a life-like representation of the face was forbidden under Islam and this would fit with the time line. However, there are likely to be other many other theories.

The Sphinx also had a beard. However this may not have been part of the original sculpture but might have been added later and also removed by the Egyptians themselves in line with the wearing of beards by the Pharoahs.

Whatever you want to believe there is no doubt that this statue has many secrets and has seen many centuries and milennia of change.

Gizeh Pyramids: The Riddle of the Sphinx
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Great Sphinx in front of the Pyramids at Gizeh should be one of the wonders of the ancient world in its own right and not just becasue it is beside the Great Pyramids. This unique statue is scultped from the limestone bedrock of the area and was and still is one of largest single stone statues in the world. A remarkable achievement for the ancient Egyptians.

The statue has the body of a lion and the head of a man (disputed to be that of Khafre or Khufu or even further disputed to be even a representation of an acutal person). Even the age of the Sphinx is debated with many alternative theories as to its age. What is not disupted is its scale - it is 57 metres long, 6 metres wide and approximately 20 metres high at the head. There is a small temple between the paws of the Sphinx.

For many centuaries after Gizeh was abandoned the Sphinx was actually buried in sand and it wasn't until about 1400BC that Tutmosis IV managed to excavate the head and two front paws. As late as the 1700's the body was still buried in sand and at that time the chest and the remainder of the fron legs were uncovered. It wasn't until the earliest part of the last centuray that the whole Sphinx was finally uncovered.

Gizeh Pyramids: Giza Pyramids - Beware of the Hassle
  • Tip Rating:
  • I just returned from Cairo a couple days ago.

When visiting the Pyramids with a Guide, no one hassles you.

When visiting them without a Guide, expect the first 10 minutes to be one annoying hassle after another, seemingly every couple minutes.

People will yell at you and claim they are "Government Officials" and even show you ID cards with their picture on it. These people are all liars. The Tourist police are supposed to prevent this activity, but apparently they sanction it or at least ignore it.

You can try being polite and say no thank you many times but at the end of the day, you have to yell at them - that will work.

No matter what these locals say, ignore them. They'll say they want to "help you", "show you around", "check your ticket because they are a govt official", "take your picture", "answer your questions", but all they really want is your money and any way they can get their hands on it.

We visited the Pyramids 4 times, once with a guide, and 3 times without a guide. Mark my words, if no guide, then expect obnoxious annoying hassle repeatedly.

However, there are nice Egyptian tourists as well, and they may frequently ask you to take a picture with them. That happened all the time as well.

    John

    Gizeh Pyramids: Cheops Boat
  • Tip Rating:
  • The boat can be seen in a seperate building next to 'The Great Pyramid' which is also known as 'Cheops Pyramid'. You have to pay seperately to go see the boat, but it is well worth the visit, the size is amazing and the technology behind it is astonishing how they could think of that thousands of years ago!

It has a small section where it demostrates how it was found, even shows you the area where it was found and a small model of the boat. You reach some stairs and you finally see the real thing, beautiful!

The boat is almost 150 feet in length, the prow sweeps upwards with a papyrus end, while the bows curves inwards and is tipped with a papyrus blossom. It is believed that the boat was for his soul, as the Pyramid was for the Pharoahs body

  • Directions: Cheops boat is enclosed in a bulding next to 'The Great Pyramid' you can't miss it.
