 | | | | Gizeh Pyramids: The Pyramids of Giza ... | Tip Rating: | | | | |
The Pyramids of Giza . . . . .I tried to imagine my first visit to the pyramids of Giza, convincing myself it would be 'no big deal'. After all, I live in the modern world and I have seen some of the tallest buildings ever built. I have even visited ancient pyramids in Mexico and modern ones in Memphis, TN and Las Vegas, NV. But I can safely say that I will never forget the first time that I saw the pyramids of Giza, their size and age actually took my breath away. The ancient Egyptians built these tombs to last for eternity. In my opinion they have succeeded, I can't imagine them ever crumbling. These huge monuments are the only 'Wonders of the Ancient World' still standing. An old Arab saying states that: 'Man fears time... time fears the pyramids'. . . . . .The pyramid on the left is the tallest and greatest pyramid ever built. It originally stood 482 feet high. It has lost 33 feet to the removal of its apex. It is made up of 2.5 million limestone blocks, each weighing about 2.5 tons. It was built in the Old Kingdom during the 4th Dynasty around 2500 BC. It belongs to the pharaoh Cheops, sometimes known as Khufu. This huge tomb remained the tallest building in the world for more then 3000 years. It was already about 2000 years old when the ancient Greeks marveled at its beauty and perfection. . . . . .The center pyramid belongs to the son of Cheops, the Pharaoh Khafre, sometimes called Chephren. It stands 446 feet, originally 470 feet. Khafre built his pyramid shorter, out of respect for his father. But he cleverly built it on a higher part of the plateau, this makes his pyramid appear to be the tallest at Giza. . . . . .The pyramid on the right belongs to the pharaoh Menkaure. It stands only about 215 feet high, not even half the height of the 'Great Pyramid'. In the distance is the modern city of Cairo, which now sprawls to the very edge of the Giza Plateau. | | | | Gizeh Pyramids: 1-Pyramids | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Of course Pyramids are the key of Cairo and Egypt at all,Riding horses and camels is something you shouldnt miss while you are here. You can go to Pyramids by Cairo airconditioned bus or taxi.,The bus ticket is for 2 pounds only and the taxi fees is depend on from where you took it.,but be sure that the price is always negotiatable to the half in some cases.,its better to ask first how much to pay from location X to location Y so you know in advance better than getting ripped off. Its recommended to go there early in the morning because the sun will hurt your skin in the mid of the day,and you should wear a hat. The most important thing I should tell you about is the price of riding a horse or a camel, unfortunly I will say if you dont know the real price so for sure you will get ripped off. The actual price is from 35-50 pounds for the long trip "You will see the 9 pyramids from the top view ,takes about 2 hours" if you didnt see those so this is not the long one. The price may increase or decrease a bit but now you know the range. The horse man will ask you for 200-300 pounds and will start negotiate with you.,you pay only whats near the avarage or little bit more,he will not agree fo sure, tell him this is what you will pay or you will call the police, you will find him agreed to take what you offerred :) Pyramids entrance fees: 20L.E Adults "about 3 Euros" 10L.E Students "about 1.5 Euros" Openning time : 8am till 5 pm Leave a Comment Website: http://www.touregypt.net

 | | | | Gizeh Pyramids: Giza Pyramids - Beware of the Hassle | Tip Rating: | | | | |
I just returned from Cairo a couple days ago. When visiting the Pyramids with a Guide, no one hassles you. When visiting them without a Guide, expect the first 10 minutes to be one annoying hassle after another, seemingly every couple minutes. People will yell at you and claim they are "Government Officials" and even show you ID cards with their picture on it. These people are all liars. The Tourist police are supposed to prevent this activity, but apparently they sanction it or at least ignore it. You can try being polite and say no thank you many times but at the end of the day, you have to yell at them - that will work. No matter what these locals say, ignore them. They'll say they want to "help you", "show you around", "check your ticket because they are a govt official", "take your picture", "answer your questions", but all they really want is your money and any way they can get their hands on it. We visited the Pyramids 4 times, once with a guide, and 3 times without a guide. Mark my words, if no guide, then expect obnoxious annoying hassle repeatedly. However, there are nice Egyptian tourists as well, and they may frequently ask you to take a picture with them. That happened all the time as well. John Website: http://www.touregypt.net
