Gizeh Pyramids: Camel Rides
  • Tip Rating:
  • The only way to travel ! - Cairo
The only way to travel !

I am not sure if these are still on offer given the ever encrouching nature of the city towards the great Pyramids but it used to be possible to do camel rides at the Pyramids. Ok so I know this is probably the Egyptian equivalent to a donkey ride on the beach in Blackpool but it was still worth doing and with a little imagination you could transport yourself back to an earlier time and contemplate life at the time of the building of the Pyramids.

    Gizeh Pyramids: Solar Boat Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The place wher the boat was found - Cairo
    The place wher the boat

This is the exact place where the boat was found at the begining of the last century. It is interesting that not only the boat was found, but also the ropes that were used for building it. Yes, the boat was made without one single nail. Just ropes. In the museum you can see those ropes exhibited along with photos taken while the rebuilding of the boat was in process.

Gizeh Pyramids: While speaking of Solar Boat Museum...
  • Tip Rating:
  • While speaking of Solar Boat Musem, I have to tell you that we were all laughing when we were given these slipers. They are actualy very practical, considering a fact that the museum is just behind the Ceops Pyramid. If we were all in our shoes in which we have just "walked the desert", the museum keepers could never get rid off the sand. So, it's funny and practical.

Gizeh Pyramids: How the Great Pyramids at Giza...
  • Tip Rating:
  • How the Great Pyramids at Giza were built is a question that may never be answered. The Cheops pyramid was built during 23 years between 2589-2566 BC. It took over 2 million blocks of stone with an average weight of 2.5 tons each. It is the largest and the oldest of the Pyramids of Giza. The Egyptians dug a network of canals off the Nile to transport stone for the pyramids and food for the workers, and a simple, local agriculture became the force that knit together the kingdom's economy. On the picture you see the Sphinx in front of the pyramids.

    Gizeh Pyramids: The pyramids
  • Tip Rating:
  • The first pyramid in Egypt was built for the 3rd dynasty Pharaoh Zoser (about 2667-2648BC). This is a step-pyramid and we even know the person behind the construction, the legendary Imhotep. He was vizier and chief architect of Zoser but had knowledge about far more than architecture. Astronomy and medicine being among the other areas he is renown for.

This lead to an unusual event in ancient Egypt as Imhotep 2000 years after his death was deified as a god of medicine and the Greeks came to identify him with Aesculapius. In late pharaonic period there was a cult centre for Imhotep in Sakkara where pilgrims came with mummified animals, especially the representation of the God of wisdom, the ibis bird.

The pyramid is built on the idea of mastabas, the form of the pre-pyramid tombs. This was done in several stages and one can still see remains from one stage which had four mastaba-forms on top of each other (one smaller than the other as they rose upwards). Later this was extended and the final pyramid has six mastabas or steps.

Around the pyramid was a large wall 545 meters long and 277 meters (1788x908 ft) wide. The wall had 14 entrances but 13 of these had only false doors, so the only open entrance to this pyramid complex is the door in the south east corner.

Gizeh Pyramids: enter the great pyramid
  • Tip Rating:
  • This one is important if you are planning to enter the pyramid be warned they allow only 300 people in a day, this is in batches of 2 . the tickets are sold from 9 to 11 and then from 1- 3, in between the ticket counter is closed. So you can buy the tickets first and then go look around.
If budget is not a constraint dont miss it, this one is only for the experience and dont expect to see anything inside, its an exciting and extremely claustrophobic climb that leads to the burial chamber.

Gizeh Pyramids: Climbing Inside the Great Pyramid
  • Tip Rating:
  • Our tour guide us bought tickets to climb inside to the burial chamber at the center of the pyramid, but he didn't tell us any specific details. Were we in for a surprise. The experience involves walking through a fairly narrow passageway, then climbing up a shallow ladder (while crouching), and finally ducking under giant stones. The burial chamber is somewhat anti-climactic (there are no paintings or decorations), so in this case, it's more about the journey than the destination. If you're at all claustrophobic, either face your fear or skip this altogether. Waiting in line while hunched over inside a thickly walled tunnel cured me of my phobia real quick!

Gizeh Pyramids: The Giza plateau and the Great Pyramids
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Pyramids are the icon most assciated with Egypt and the main tourist destination there. The pyramids of Giza were built around 4500 years ago. Giza was part of the ancient city of Memphis. There are 3 main pyramids at Giza, each built by three rulers of the dynasty: Khufu (Cheops), Khafre (Cheaphren) & Menkaure (Mycerinus) as their burial places.

Everyone who comes to Giza has to be prepared for the surge of camel and horse hustlers and people selling souvenirs. If you visit, be firm in your refusals - 'No' is usually enough and walking away. However, they are very difficult to avoid!
