Memphis and Sakkara: Saqqara

Saqqara is a very interesting place to visit. As far as Pyramids go, from Saqqara which is a steeped pyramid to the Pyramids at Giza its actually interesting to see how pyramids have advanced!

You can look inside one of the pyramids and there are tombs to visit out here too.

    Memphis and Sakkara: Saqqara Pyramid
Although not as famous as the great pyramids of Geiza, the pyramids here are very nice and give a good chance to walk around and admire them without the huge crowds. You can go inside some of the smaller tombs, which allows you inside a large pyramid without the mass crowds at Geiza.

Memphis and Sakkara: Pyramids as they used to be
Dashur was the first site I ve visited in a taxi tour.Set in the middle of the desert far away from civilization, apart from the oil refinery few kms away, these piramids are extremely interesting mostly for the location and the conditions in which they are preserved.
The funerary chamber is accessible even though I believe this is the most claustrophobic I ever visited.
Saqqara is the most interesting site, even more than giza plateau,as apart from the pyramids there are many mastaba, or tombs worth to visit. The drawings inside are amazing with still colors on them and depicting scenes from ordinary life they are like an open book explaining egyptians lifestyle. The Pyramid of TI is the only one I ve seen that has funerary chamber with carved hyerogliphics.
Memphis is a small but interesting site with a big statue laying in the museum,a marble sphinx and many guards pointing up the statues(i didn t understand for what kind of reason..)

Memphis and Sakkara: Don't waste ur time and mney at Memphis
Hire a taxi for half day i-e 8 to 5. head for Giza and spend 2 hours there and then just have a look of Memphis open Air Museum from outside. there is nothing there expect a giant statue of Ramses and some other u have already seen a lot like those in Egypt Museum.

But Spend large part of day in saqqara.

    Memphis and Sakkara: Stepped Pyramid
I don't know why, but I found the Stepped Pyramid at Saqqara more impressive than the Pyramids at Gizeh. Perhaps it is because it is a on a smaller scale and an earlier attempt, it has a more human dimension. It is definitely worth the trip out of Cairo.

Memphis and Sakkara: Get to it early
If you plan on doing Sphinx, here, Giza Pyramids then it is best to try and do them first in your day and early to avoid the masses of fellow tourists. There are dozens of big tours that are organised. sakkara is awesome for it's history and buildings and tombs artwork.

Memphis is a place you have to see if you visit Cairo. The beautiful and big statue of Ramses II is amazing.
Entrance fee was in 2005, 25 L.E. (Egyptian pound)
At the Saqqara area you can find a lot of mastaba tombs (toms of the nobles) and some pyramids that donīt look like a pyramid anymore. To mention the pyramid of Unaz and Teti.
But the step pyramid of Djozer in Saqqara. Itīs one of the first pyramids, and itīs amazing that it is still standing here to day. Just amazing.
The entrance fee to the step pyramid was in 2005, 35 L.E.

Memphis and Sakkara: Memphis-1st Capital of Upper and Lower Egypt
Memphis or Mit-Rehineh, is 30 minutes south of Cairo. Memphis was founded by King Menes (3100 B.C.) of Upper Egypt when he conquered Lower Egypt. Memphis lost it's status as the capital of Egypt during the rule of the Middle Kingdom. The Colossus of Ramses II lies in the right entrance of the museum's hall. In the center of the outside courtyard is the Alabaster Sphinx which was excavated in 1912 it dates back to the 13th Century B.C. At the foot of the courtyard stands a statue of Ramses II wearing the double crown representing a united Upper and Lower Egypt.
