  • Sehr empfehlenswert: Easy Travel Egypt

by Alfonsmark Written May 5, 2011

One of the most rivers famous on Earth!

The Nile flows north through downtown Cairo. It is like a requirement when in Cairo to see the Nile.
It is obviously one of the most important waterways in history. It is not all that impressive but worth a quick stop.

The Traditional and Pollution Free Felucca

by Mozumbus Updated Mar 6, 2012
    Felucca Sailing through the Nile

While making the list of ‘Must Dos’ for our quick Egyptian trip, I felt confused what type of boat to choose for a Nile hangout. The hotel type ‘Nile Cruise’ with all the amenities and luxuries and the shorter ‘Dinner Cruise’ with the traditional belly dancing are popular among tourists however they looked far from an authentic experience, which we were looking for.

Further internet research led me to the wikitravel’s page about Felucca; the time tested way to cruise through the world’s largest river without adding to the pollution. This was definitely what we were looking for.

Though it is better to experience the full fledged Felucca in the Upper Egypt city of Aswan, however, we had to confine ourselves to one available in Cairo.

It cannot be more soothing than cruising in the Nile! Even though it was right in the middle of the chaotic and polluted conurbation, the calm blue stream of the river was too refreshing. Gamal – the captain of our Felucca – was dexterously playing with the sail to move the noiseless boat along the sweet Nile breeze. As soon as the ride started, our Egyptian friend Ramy sniffed in a typical style as if he is trying to smell the fresh air!

For some moments, I got free from all the worldly hassles!.

Most importantly, one does not need any external support, i.e. a guide, for this experience which can easily be done independently without getting ripped by one of those notorious touts roaming around in Cairo!

What to Pay: We paid EGP 60 (+ 10 for the Captain’s tip) for an hour of the ride for the whole boat which can easily accommodate around 10 people for the same price. It is helpful to know Arabic numbers or use pen and paper for clarity. Pay after you come back. Better to take drinks etc from the downtown as it would not be easy to find a shop there.

Timing: we reached there around 3:30 pm so that the ride ended around the sunset which added flavor to the experience. October to March is the best season to fully enjoy the trip.

Nile River Dinner Cruise Aboard the Memphis

by machomikemd Written Oct 25, 2013

this will be my things to do tips on Nile River Cruise, I will have separate nightlife and restaurant tips for it.

what tour of Cairo is not complete with a Nile River Dinner Cruise? cruising along the mighty Nile River, where the Egyptian and other Civilisations (such as the Nubians) started as territorial egypt then was only along the first 50 to 100 kilometers either way of the nile river. If you don't have time to have a multi day nile cruise for a few days going to the famous archeological site of Aswan, Abu Simbel and Luxor in Southern Egypt, then having a nile river cruise in Cairo for dinner can be somewhat of a substitute.

there are many lunch and dinner cruise ships lining the nile river along the Nile River Corniche in Cairo and we took the Memphis tours Andrea Cruising Boat. the dinner cruise lasts for 3 hours from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm every night and buffet dinner, entertainment like the belly dancing, tanoura show and singin is included and you can buy alcoholic beverages (not included in the package) like egyptian & international beers and liqours and smoke cigarettes and shisha along the open roof deck of the ship while you are cruising and savoring the sights along the nile river.

price of a Nile River Cruise Package is about 500 LE (about US $ 75 per for single person) 400 LE ( US $ 55 for 2 to 3 persons and per person in a group)

included in the packge is the buffet dinner (the drinks, including bottled water is not included).

hotel pick up and drop off is included.

Walk along the Nile. It's the reason of Egypt's existence, and even though it's dirty and smelly, it's still an impressive stream!
