~ Camel Trekking In Cairo ~

    by Heavens-Mirror Written Sep 25, 2005

One of the best ways to travel around Cairo is definetly by Camel, it is an amazing experience although the first time i tried it i was so scared because they are so high up.

Whenever i go to Cairo i always make sure i take a Camel ride, we normally go trekking around the pyramid area in the Desert which is great fun.

We just sit & talk about everyday things. But before going on a Camel ride always agree the price first & only give a tip if you want to.

Around the back of the Giza Pyramids

When we were at the Giza Pyramids our guide took a poll to see who wanted to go for a camel ride. We'd have to drive behind the pyramid to the desert where the camels were waiting for brave tourists. Well we all decided we would go, how often does one get the opportunity to ride a camel?

We were told to pick the camel we wanted to ride on. I don't think there's a system to this other than if the camel spits at you - don't pick that one, probably has an attitude problem. Once you choose your camel it's time to get on. I didn't realize how big a camel was, I almost needed a step stool to get on the camel while he was sitting on the ground. They are HUGE animals. Then the boy/man who leads your camel (no you don't get to just gallop away with the camel) makes a sound and the camel starts to get up. Hold on tight! When their back legs come up you lean back in your seat --- way way back or you'll topple over the front of the camel. Then as they stand on their front legs you will need to lean forward, nearly kissing it's nose!

If I remember correctly they take you for a walk 10 mins towards the desert, stop and take pictures of your group and then bring you back again. It reminded me of riding a horse - only much much bigger.

Our guide bargained for the prices for our camel rides but it wasn't unreasonable for a once in a lifetime ride.

Yes, there are camels, and there are horses (for horse back riding), but I'd suggest a carriage ride through Cairo, it's unforgettable!
This is me in front of one of the lovely ones.
