Taxis: Transportation around Cairo
Getting around Cairo is not much of a problem. There are plenty of taxis and buses around. A taxi to the museum or around the city shouldn;t cost more that 20 pounds.

However, those taxi rides that I took freaked me out a bit. Some of them drive ruthlessly. Gosh, they just drive like no body's business. Remember to bargain for the price before getting into a taxi to avoid getting cheated. Some taxis do not use a meter taxi.

    Taxis: Encapsulates Cairo's Freneticism
Hailing a black-and-white colored cab is not difficult, at almost any time of day or night, in almost any location. The vehicles are an assortment of makes, from manufacturers in Turkey, Russia and worse. Cab fares within the metropolitan area are from EP 10 to 30, depending on distance and relative bargaining power. You can either agree upon the faire at embarking or pay what you think is reasonable at destination. Cab rides are always an adventure as they careen around corners, relating to red stoplights "as a suggestion only". Horns get more use than lights, which are surprisingly not turned on by all at night. As everywhere, cabbies are true local color, though their English competency varies widely.

    Taxis: Local Taxi's
My recomendation is to use the local cabs when getting around in Cairo. ALWAYS fix a price before getting in and make sure he knows where you are going. Ask him a second time if he understands, if he says yes that is still no guarantee he has any idea. If he starts to look confused during your trip, firmly ask him to pull over and find a policeman. We did that a couple of times and the Police do speak quite good english.
Final tip. Only pay what you agreed on, no more! dont let him bulls--t about it was heavy traffic (its always heavy traffic) and dont feel sorry for him when he gives you a sad or disapointed look after you have paid him. You probably still paid about 5 times what a local will pay.

    Taxis: Surviving Cairo's taxi rides
Surviving taxi rides in Cairo requires a strong heart. You can't be afraid. It is quite an experience. Egyptians drive like the Greeks. =) Cab fares are very cheap.

    Taxis: Taxi's and hotel taxi's
Taxi's are out of control in Cairo, they are everywhere, and believe me they come alive when they see a foreigner coming. Suddenly they all speak English, French, German, whatever language you think. Just like in Far East ask your hotel to write the name of your hotel in Arabic, but no sooner that you approach a taxi 10 of them come out of nowhere. They don't mean any danger, they just want to make some money. Have an idea of the fare you are expected to pay and don't be afraid to haggle for the price. We jumped in taxi's at all times and not once we felt taken advantage of or any danger. At your hotel they try to send you in a hotel taxi that will charge you almost double of what your gonna pay with a regular taxi. The only time we did this was on a Saturday night when we were nicely dressed and need a taxi with a working AC otherwise a regular taxi is OK....if going to the aiport (see my other transportation tip)

Taxis: Taxis are the way to go
Taxis are the perfect means of transport to get around the city of Cario. Not only are there taxis everywher in Cario but they are very cheap and they get you around the city very quick. On average a 10-15min cab ride cost us no more than about 2 dollars Canadian and we used theese taxis every day numerous times. Do not use the private taxis outside your hotel as the prices are heavely inflated, instead walk out to street and flag down a taxi by yourself which is no problem as the seem to be every second car, but always make sure to set a price before departure.

Taxis: The art of taxi fare haggling, part 1
Trying to negotiate a fare in Cairo taxis is daunting the first time - you generally won't know what a "fair fare" will be. It isn't helped by the fact that taxis operate under the assumption that you know what you should be paying. Cairo taxi ettiquite is to jump in and give your destination, then when you arrive hand the driver the appropriate amount (plus tip/baksheesh) and just leave.

If you ask "How much to get to XYZ", you will be immediately marked as a sucker. The driver will quote you a fare that is at least twice the "real" fare and will be reluctant to lower it. If you halve any fare quote you get, that would normally be a generous fare and the driver would be happy to take it if you proffered it at the end of a journey. By asking you identify yourself as not knowing what the fare should be, and the driver will insist his price is a reasonable one; oh, he might drop it by a few symbolic pounds but it'll still be too much.

It's often good to ask someone at your hotel how much the fare will be beforehand. If it seems too low or you're unsure whether it would be acceptable, add a few pounds on top.

    Taxis: Plane.
We did get around mainly by foot. Only to the pyramids we took a taxi (which is very cheap if you bargain right...) As taxis are very cheap one shouldn't even think of taking a bus when travelling alone...
The only advantage by going by feet you get in much more contact with the people and a better feeling of this astonishing town.

    Taxis: traffic
em... i would walk around as much as i could here. or take a taxi. (remember to agree the price BEFORE you get in, as some dont have meters and will rip you off.)

but anyway, taxi or no, you will take forever getting around. the traffic is a nightmare, there seems to be no order! most cars dont look roadworthy - we were in a taxi and i asked if tehre was air conditioning and the driver just pushed his window out onto the highway!!
be prepared for waits, jams and more waits. belt up.

    Taxis: Haggling Taxi Drivers
Always negotiate the fair before you get into any street black cab. If you don't they will definitely take you for a ride, financially, and there is no way to haggle out of that.
