Al Maza Airforce base

On the way to the airport, you pass a lot of military establishments. There is the Museum to the 6 day War, walls with panels illustrating military scenes, military acedemy, and the Al Maza Air Force Base where the funeral of Yasser Arafat was held, before his body was taken back to Palestine for burial.
Because of all this, it is very common for traffic to be held up when the President is moving from one place to another. the road will be lined with armed men on all sides.
In nearby Misr el Gadida is n openwork pyramid which is a monument to soldiers killed in battle. I wasn't able to stop and go in but the area looked quite nice and the 'pyramid' attractive. The soldiers on sentry duty outside must have been roasting in their red uniforms. The canon was very smart too with its black and gold paint.

The Baron's Palace

The Baron's Palace.
This building influenced by the architecture of a Cambodian temple was built for a Belgian industrialist who was the creator of modern Heliopolis, Baron-General Edouard-Louis-Joseph Empain (1852-1929),
The Hindu Palace's exterior was influenced by a Cambodian Temple. There were busts, statues, elephants, snakes, Buddhas, and Indian gods. The interior was equally elaborate..
The landscape surrounding the Hindu Palace had green terraces [artificially made] with marble statues and exotic vegetation.
Three generations of Empains occupied the premises. The first Baron Empain entertained all of Egypt's and foreign notables including King Albert and Queen Elizabeth of the Belgians. Then there was the dashing playboy son, Baron Jean Empain, followed by two grand-daughters
The palace was sold by its owners in 1957. Its murals and interior decorations are all gone
.More recently the palace was the centre of a rumour that Cairo's black-clad, tattooed satanists held orgies, sacrificed live animals [cats and rats ]. in the dungeons.{ or so my taxi driver informed me]
It was left to decay until recently sold once again.
