The Necropolis of al-Bagawat is a Christian cemetary. Most of the hundreds of tombs are from the 4th to the 6th century AD.
They are mud-brick traditional domed Coptic tombs.
Some tombs have wall paintings with scens from the bible.The paintings are faded very rapidly.
Entrance from 8 am till 5 pm (6 pm in summer).
Entrance fee: 20 Egyptian pound, reduction for students.

The ceiling of the entrance gate is beautifull painted, like you see at Medinet Habu at the westbank of Luxor, also dedicated to Amun.
The colours are faded and so the image is not good to see anymore.

When we visited the Temple of Hibis in 1999, the temple was under repair.
You can't compare this rather small tempel complex with the huge ones in the Nile Valley, but our visit was wonderfull. Nobody else around except the guard of the site.
And it's special to find a temple in the middle of the desert.

The Temple of Hibis, is dedicated to Amun, Mut (his spouse) and Khonsu (his son).Together they form the holy Theban family triad.
Amun, the original tutelary deity of Thebe, god of fertility and light became during the New Kingdom associated with the sun-god Ra. As Amun-Ra he was the King of the Gods.

Hibis was the capital of the Kharga Oasis in ancient times.
The temple of Hibis, dedicated to Amun-Ra, is built in the 6 th century BC mostly by the Persian Emperor Darius I.
In 525 BC the Asyrians were swept aside by the Persians, who managed to hold power for almost 200 years till the arrival of Alexander the Great in 332 BC.
