    Balat Local Customs

Walking in Balat you think you're in a time machine and back in the middle ages. And then suddenly you're back in the 20th century again. Electricity for the laundry and a machine for washing, allthough not the most modern one.

    Balat Things to Do

At some places Balat looks like an open air museum, abandoned by former inhabitants. But larger parts of Balat are still inhabited. The people are very friendly and hospitable. They often invited us to drink a glass of tea with them.In the town we saw beautifull decorated walls, stone jars, mill stones and pens for goats.

    Balat Things to Do

From the side we approached Balat, turning off the road from Mut to El Kharga, Balat looks like fortified town. At the other side of the town the houses were more scattered and from the alleys we had some nice views at the surrounding desert. It was interesting to discover these differences.

    Al Qasr Things to Do

The buildings in old al-Qasr are made of mud. This mud-architecture with the nice organic forms looks wonderfull and gives the town its medieval atmosphere. The mosque of old al-Qasr with its sculptural form looks beautifull.

    Al Qasr Things to Do

In Al-Qasr in the Dakhla Oasis it is nice to walk through the labyrinth of streets of the old town. The place has a medieval atmosphere and reminds how other oasis towns must have been in ancient times. It can be very hot, but in the shade of the narrow and covered streets it is okay for walking. During our walk we saw the mosque, a madrassa and...

    Al Qasr Favorites

The kids in Al-Qasr were very curious about the strange visitors in their home-town.They came out their houses, liked to chat, but were also very shy in the beginning.

    Temple of Amun Ra Transportation

From Al-Kharga you can take the bus to Cairo and Asyut (several buses each day). To Luxor are only three buses a week. There are also possibilities by air and train, but not at a daily base.We had our own bus and went from al-Kharga to Luxor. This time no escorts of the police (like we had from Dakhla to Kharga). The road to Luxor is very scenic...

The Necropolis of al-Bagawat is a Christian cemetary. Most of the hundreds of tombs are from the 4th to the 6th century AD.They are mud-brick traditional domed Coptic tombs. Some tombs have wall paintings with scens from the bible. The paintings are faded very rapidly. Entrance from 8 am till 5 pm (6 pm in summer).Entrance fee: 20 Egyptian pound,...

Temple of Amun Ra Things to Do

The ceiling of the entrance gate is beautifull painted, like you see at Medinet Habu at the westbank of Luxor, also dedicated to Amun. The colours are faded and so the image is not good to see anymore.
