    At some places Balat looks like an open air museum, abandoned by former inhabitants. But larger parts of Balat are still inhabited. The people are very friendly and hospitable. They often invited us to drink a glass of tea with them.In the town we saw beautifull decorated walls, stone jars, mill stones and pens for goats.

    From the side we approached Balat, turning off the road from Mut to El Kharga, Balat looks like fortified town. At the other side of the town the houses were more scattered and from the alleys we had some nice views at the surrounding desert.It was interesting to discover these differences.

    From Al-Kharga you can take the bus to Cairo and Asyut (several buses each day). To Luxor are only three buses a week.There are also possibilities by air and train, but not at a daily base.We had our own bus and went from al-Kharga to Luxor. Most of the hundreds of tombs are from the 4th to the 6th century AD.They are mud-brick traditional domed Coptic tombs.Some tombs have wall paintings with scens from the bible.The paintings are faded very rapidly.     The ceiling of the entrance gate is beautifull painted, like you see at Medinet Habu at the westbank of Luxor, also dedicated to Amun.The colours are faded and so the image is not good to see anymore.

    Nothing changed here since the middle ages.
    To get to Balat take a pickup from near the general hospital in Mut.
