Visit the locals- say the Nubians

by Penelope4

In Aswan, the tour guide asked if we would like to meet with locals. Of course I did want to meet the natives of every country. Our brief visit was very pleasant. There were small alleys and the houses were made differently from the city. You can imagine how awesome it was for me to find out that the locals in that village cooked the old way. They do not have stove or modern equipment. You will not be asked to donate but you may buy things that they themselves do. The prices are moderate, if not low so I found it two birds in one stone. I came to know some families, talked with them and saw how they live. The selected Nubians we visited know how to make the visit pleasant by not being "aufdringlich" we say in German - inquisitive, aggressive or taking advantage of you being there. I recommend you ask your tour guide about a visit in the village.

Sand dunes

by uglyscot

Once you leave the capital, Egypt is a charming country of canals , villages and , of course, the Nile and the desert. The picture here is near the pyramids of Dahshur. I loved the effect of the sky and the sand dunes, and the pyramids standing in the empty landscape.

10th of October Production City

by zuhur

Interested in the new cable/satellite/television production in Egypt? Many new channels and programs are taking place here. I appeared on a show out here, and silly me, I expected to go to the old Television building downtown. Instead, whisked out onto the highway that goes past Agouza and into the desert. Finally one gets to 10th of October City, which is a strange conglomeration of industry and housing. The production city is within it - so if you are filming, or in the industry, may be of interest to you. Facilities were great, clean, modern, very professional youngish staff.

Beyond my general tips: the Cairo Opera house, the National Theater, the Hanager theater (info. for all can be found in al-Ahram Weekly entertainment) also go see the 'dervish' performance across from the Khan Khalili on Wed. or Saturday evenings (go at 7:30 if you want a seat) -This is a great example of a staged performance, meaning a traditional form of worship turned into a spectacle for an audience. It really wasn't danced this way in the past, very slow and stately were the Mevlevis, but interpreted by Egyptian performers it is a wild and fun spinning dance, where the performer uses different layers which he peels off to highlight his spinning shape. The Bayt Sihami is an old, medieval house. Other events here sometimes, like readings and Ramadan events. To find it go to the Husseini. Look for the cross-over walking bridge over the main street going to the Khan &just below it, an...

October War Panorama in Cairo

by dpawas2cool

In the Heliopolis area of Cairo there is a large museum and 3-D panorama telling the story of the Egyptian war against Israel in 1973 (known as the Yom Kippur War). Without getting into the politics of the situation, it is fair to say that the museum and display focus on the Egyptian perspective of the war. I did not get a chance to go inside of the museum but did stop to look at the interesting display of military equipment out front. According to my travel guide, the audio presentation accompanying the panorama is in Arabic only, however, if you are able to make it when it is open and are interested in the Middle East peace process this may be very interesting for you. According to my tour guide there are shows Wed - Mon at 0930, 1100, 1220, 1800 and 1930. Admission was 10 Egyptian pounds. Looked very interesting!

Cairo Citadel/Muhammad Ali Mosque

by ashwini62

Cairo Citadel, a magnificent fortress in Cairo was constructed under by Salah ad-Din - an Abbasid Ruler, between 1176 and 1183. It is said that the healthy air that surrounded the citadel was the main reasons why Salah ad-Din chose it as the site. The Citadel's appearance today is the vision of Muhammad 'Ali, particularly the mosque that bears his name. Completed in 1848, the Ottoman-style Muhammad 'Ali Mosque or Alabaster Mosque is the most noticeable in all of Cairo; for more than 150 years it has dominated the skyline. The Citadel offers panoramic views of Islamic Cairo in a castle setting rich in history. Within the Citadel complex are the following attractions: Al-Gawhara (Jewel) Palace, Mohammed Ali Mosque, Police Museum, Sultan Al-Nasir Mosque, Military Museum, Carriage Museum, Archaeological Museum, Suleyman Pasha Mosque and Bab el-Azab.

Sultan Hasan Mosque

by ashwini62

The Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan in Cairo is one of the largest Islamic religious buildings in the world. What to see--The Mosque of Sultan Hassan is one of the largest mosques in the world, measuring 150m in length and covering an area of 7,906 sq m. Its walls rise to 36m and its tallest minaret to 68m.Visitors enter the complex through a tall portal that is itself a work of art where a narrow passageway leads to the brightly lit courtyard. The courtyard centers on a domed ablutions fountain, which was probably an Ottoman addition. Soaring on four sides of the courtyard are vaulted liwans (sitting rooms), accented by hanging lamp chains and red-and-black rims. Each liwan is devoted to one of the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence. Skilfully fitted between and behind each liwan is a madrasa, complete with its own courtyard and four stories of cells for students and teachers. One of...

Bahariya Oasis - Desert Safari

by boltonian

After arrival you will be swarmed with companies offering you the best and the cheapest trip. I booked with Helal Travel before I arrived and was amazing. I had 2 guides and we drove around the desert, dunes, rocks etc. The guides pointed out each feature. By night we slept under the stars (all 10 billion of them). If you have never seen the sky at night from this isolated position, you simply must. Back to the Oasis, we stopped for a swim in the clean sulphur pumphouse. All together, the trip cost £60, but between a few of you, is very cheap.See my page on Bawati Oasis or my Travelougue
