Off Beaten Towns Egypt (Part 2)

by matt10gonzalez

AL'ARISHAl'Arish is another remote beach town that hugs the northern Mediterrenean. It's the complete opposite of busy and chaotic Alexandria and a complete heaven to those who search for empty beaches or are sick of the city life of Alexandria/Cairo! NOTE: Everyone, the locals and local tourists here will look at you if you come here because this is totally out of the way! WHAT'S HERE? Well, small modern hotels, beaches, and that's it! Don't expect Hyatts, Marriotts, Le Meridiens, Mc. Donalds or anytime fancy because this is a totally out of the way beach town! WORTH STAYING HERE? Honestly, I opt to pick Sharm instead of this. But if you're lucky to pass here, it's quite interesting to have everyone looking at you and feeling that 'off-beaten' vibe!HOW TO GET HERE- The direct bus Mazada tours passes through here to get a bathroom break. This might be a good chance to see it! Otherwise,...

Off-Beaten Towns Egypt! (Part 1)

by matt10gonzalez

TABATaba is a small frontier town that is the gateway to Israel. It has a beautiful small castle in a little isle and one big hotel guarding it. There's really nothing much to do here except to cross the border to Israel and vice versa. WHAT'S HERE? Well, there's that castle, and some red sea adventuring to do here. (Though it's a WHOLE lot better to snorkel and dive in Ras Mohammed than here.)WORTH STAYING HERE? Honestly, not really- I would pick Sharm el Sheikh anytime that even if I arrive in Taba at 7 PM, I'll still opt to take the taxi and arrive Sharm at 10 PM. I'll still do that! At least by the time you arrive Sharm, the party is just starting! Unlike in Taba, there's very few eateries and nightlife compared to Sharm! (Meaning, you're likely forced to eat in your hotel's restaurant here!) HOW TO GET HERE- It's 3 hours by bus/taxi from Sharm, 9 hours from Cairo, 3 hours from St....

abu simbel

by rikhelle

abu simble, is the temple of ramesse the 2nd's. it is right on the river and was retrived from the water in the 60's this is truly an amazing temple and is well worth the extra time and money to get there. the best time to go is at sun rise around 4am to see the sun come up over the water and light up this amazing structure is really second to none.

Star Wars in Sinai!

by matt10gonzalez

Who said the destination was the most important? Who said to sleep along the journey? This is awfully false if you ever decided to take a taxi from Sharm-el-Sheikh to the St. Catherine Monastery! Keep your eyes open: Because the scenery along the way is AWESOME! For me, honestly, the journey was more awesome than the building of the St. Catherine Monastery itself! Your 3 hr. (Longer if ever your vehicle breaks down) drive takes you along steep, sharp, brown beautiful mountains which cuts the road like a ravine and in the middle of the trip, you come across this vast, wild, empty desert full of spectacular, tall rock formations with a lot of holes like dwarves lived in them! It looks like a set from a star wars movie! So keep your eyes open and don’t miss this beauty!

The Suburbs of Cairo- Usually Ignored by Tourists!

by matt10gonzalez

The Suburds of Cairo- Usually Ignored by Tourists! With the Pyramids, the Citadel and more in mind, why bother going to the suburbs? No wonder it's out of the tourist itinerary! And a chance to feel off-beaten and a chance to get to know how the middle-class to upper class locals 'Live' in Egypt! This suburb: Heliopolis. SO WHY BOTHER GOING TO HELIOPOLIS?1.) For fanatics of Goosebumps! Forgot your goosebumps back home? Wanna buy more? There's a store here (as of 2005) that sells a lot of goosebumps and fright nights! You can't find that in Luxor, Downtown Cairo or any where else in Egypt! (Though I forgot the street, we just found it by walking!)2.) See Dogs and Golden Retrievers! After being hassled in Luxor and the Pyramids, did you ever think they were 'extinct' in Egypt? Well, you're wrong! In Heliopolis, the owners do walk them 'leisurely' around! And you thought they were extinct!...

Do What The Locals Do: Take the Subway!

by matt10gonzalez

What comes to your mind when you think of the word 'Subway' in Egypt? A magic carpet like train full of arabian people in aladdin costumes with sheeshas? Or a train that's packed literally like rotten sardines on a rush hour, the same like any subway trains around the world? (Paris, New York and so on...) Well, if you think (or wish) it was like a magic carpet, aladdin style train, you're definitely dreaming! The latter choice is the jackpot! But one thing is for sure: That unlike Paris, New York, Singapore and so on, hardly any tourists take the subways! So what's so significant about taking the subway in Cairo?1.) Take the subway to the suburds (Like Heliopolis, Maadi and so on) and you'll be stared at by all the locals! Feel like a superstar! (Locals, surprised, were asking us questions why are we tourists taking the subway? Oh..and they didn't ask us for baksheesh you paranoid...

Be Popular with the Crowds!

by matt10gonzalez

The people in Egypt are not all about baksheesh, baksheesh, tips, tips, tips! Many are truly friendly! Believe it or not, even kids and the teenage girls aren't shy at all with foreigners! (In Cairo and Alexandria at least.) Even to Filipinos! (If you wonder...)And I got a chance to be popular (temporarily) with some girls, who were on a trip to the famous pyramids! Wow...I couldn't believe how they were! They were like cute monsters! They kept screaming (the fun kind of screaming), kissing my stuff toy, (they were so amused with it!) and pulling my water bottle, my baby (baby- because I always hug my water bottle wherever I go like a baby!) away from me!! (They were teasing) It was so cute! (And they didn't even ask for baksheesh!) Dad got a bit jealous! I could see!DAD- (Feeling embarrassed after seeing me, screaming like a girl with the Egyptian girls) "(Annoyed tone) Why do you act...

The Nubian Village

by michaelxxx

If your done with the temples of Aswan, and you have nothing to do, why not go to the Nubian Village!? Simply ask your hotel if they have any tours to the Nubian village! (Ours came with a Nubian guy tour guide)Going to the Nubian Village is the fun part! You get to ride on a Feluca, and sail through the currents of the river! Sometimes your feluca will even get caught in a mini whirllpool. (Ours did and it was so fun!) Once you arrived in land, The friendly nubians will give you each a camel and you will ride it to the nubian village! (A 15-20minute camel ride)Once you arrived at the Nubian village, feel free to look around, like go to the school and learn to write in Nubian, or hike the short mountain path and see the whole Nubian village. If your lucky, your tour guide may let you visit his house, and you will see the different Nubian architexture and furnitures! On our way back, some...

Where Are The Towns in Egypt?

by matt10gonzalez

Something that's always left out when travelling to Egypt are its towns or the residential sectors! What comes to your mind first when making an itinerary to Egypt? The Pyramids, the Temples, the Red Sea and so on. Of course that'll come to your mind first- they're the most beautiful highlights of this country! But what about the towns? The lifestyle of the Egyptians in the provinces? Can you forget about them? Yes, you easily can- which makes it even better! It is, an off-beaten thing to do!From a far, the poor Egyptians have a hard and uncomfortable lifestyle: They live in these unfinished dusty brick tenements which makes you wonder "How on earth can they live in these stuff?" They (the Egyptians) cram and overcrowd (few privacy) in one dirty apartment, the drainage (I saw it) is awful, (the toilet's always clogged and sometimes, believe it or not, some apartments have NO toilets- they...

Would You Mind Signing Autographs for Poor Kids?

by matt10gonzalez

True, most street kids in Egypt will ask for bakheesh but not everyone will! And this tip will prove it! Some kids will seriously want an autograph (signature) from you! No kidding! Feel like a superstar! It happened to us in Luxor, while riding in a horse carriage, and while we didn't know where our harrassing, scary-looking (and sounding) horse driver was taking us (He was really taking us far, far, far away from town! And would ignore us when we would ask him where! He terrifying!) and while dad and mom look so worried like they were going to die, look who comes cheering us up from the streets: Street kids- street kids asking us for an AUTOGRAPH!Wow! We were so shocked! It was kind of funny, and cute! They kept chasing and chasing (as in literally running) us and asking my brother (they found my brother beautiful, they said he was like an actor! But they didn't find me cute!) to sign...
