Back home and didn't visit Alexandria's Library?

by Elsa7

I came back home and I found myself thinking about the places that I did not visit while in Egypt. I wanted to kick my own behind for not visiting one of the most famous libraries in the world, Alexandria's Library. It is not one of the places that tourist visits the most, but it is worth to take a couple of hours to check the treasures they have there.

Luggage storage in Cairo with a difference!

by rach76

Rent a cabana at the Nile Hotel in Cairo and you get a small poolside room with bed and shower, plus access to the pool and restaurants. A very relaxing way to spend a bit of time waiting for the flight/train out of Cairo. About LE270 for the room. You might need to blag your way in with your luggage, but if the front desk give you hassle, call the pool manager and ask him if it is ok.

St. Catherine's Monastery - Sinai - Egypt

by ellsasha

We arrived by bus from Cairo, and walked about half a mile to St Catherine’s Monastery. It was midday and the heat was searing, but the sight of the monastery nestled below Mount Sinai which is in reality a collection of peaks and the biblical name of the peak upon which Moses received the ten commandments, took away all feelings of fatigue. We stayed in the guest house at the monastery, which made a perfect starting point for our climb of Mount Sinai. We climbed at night. The mountain is over 7,000 feet high and we ascended taking the west path which is more arduous and climbed the 3,750 steps hewn out of the mountain rock by the monks. We started out about 1:00 a.m. and by daybreak we were almost at the top. That journey was one of the most moving I remember, the climb was lit only by the moon and the starlight. The night was silent and apart from our own movement the only sounds we...

Harvest in the Delta

by uglyscot

By May the harvest is well under way. As I mention in a travelogue, the stalks of the winnowed grain are then stored on roofs, ledges, anywhere. The fields are then opened to the cattle, and finally prepared and watered for next sowing. All this can be seen when passing from Cairo to Alexandria, and often is what you see on the walls of tombs!

Visit a Mosque and a Coptic Church

by Myndo

Every Egyptian city has several Mosques and also Coptic Churches. We visited both these religious buildings in Aswan. I am sure you can also do it in other places. If you are on your own, maybe better ask before entering a mosque or church.Spotting the Mosques seems to be easier than finding the churches, just have a look at the Minarets around. We had the possibilty to visit a Mosque and a Coptic Church with our guide.Don't forget to leave your shoes at the entrance of the Mosque. You can go in barefeet or in socks. The floor of the Mosque is covered in carpets. There are no chairs, you just sit / kneel on the floor. We did not have to wear scarves, but if you want to be sure, take some with you.We had an interesting conversation sitting there, about the treatment of woman in Islam. Our guide, that was really religious (it was Ramadan and he did eat or drink nothing the whole day, even...

The Aga Khan's Mausoleum - Aswan

by ellsasha

The Aga Khan, one of the richest men in the world during his lifetime, was the 48th Imam of the Isma'ili sect if Shi'ite Muslims. His mausoleum is a very elegant pink granite structure built on a hillside from where there is an excellent view overlooking Aswan, the view includes the Aga Khan’s white villa where his wife until her death in 2000 lived for three months every year. After the Aga Khan died in 1957 his widow Omme Habibeh placed a single red rose on his white marble tomb and during the times that she was away a gardener placed the rose. Despite many pilgrims visiting the tomb at the time that we did, the feeling was that of tranquility. I visited last there in 1997 and I believe that it has since been closed to the public, I heard that graffiti was getting out of control, I cannot imagine anyone writing or etching on such a beautiful piece of architecture.

Industry in the Delta

by uglyscot

Although the Delta is primarily agricultural, there are areas of industry, such as brick making and gas that can be seen from a train. Industrial areas are not beautiful, but can break the so -called monotony of the landscape and then you appreciate the fields and trees even more.

towns of the Delta

by uglyscot

Even when the rustic scenes were interrupted by small towns and villages, there were things to notice- dovecotes like outsize beehives [ some on the roof of buildings], cemeteries with low covered tombs, mosques of different design, decorated shops ; and the flip side- the rubble and rubbish, half dilapidated blocks of houses, garish petrol stations .There are a number of larger towns like Tanta and Zigazig and Damhour, but many smaller ones dotted throughout the Delta.

Don't miss the sluice of Esna!

by Diana75

On our cruise from Aswan to Luxor we didn't stop to visit Esna, located on the left bank of the River Nile, about 55km south of Luxor.Still we didn't miss the moment when our ship passed through the sluice of Esna, an important occasion for us to be proud as the works there were done by a Romanian company.

The Suez Channel

by Diana75

On our way to St. Catherine we stopped for a while at the point where the camions are embarked on the ferry for passing on the other side of the Suez Channel. It may not be the best point for understating the importance of the Suez Channel but at least you can make an idea. Unfortunately I couldn't take any picture as this is a military site, but back in 1998 my husband took these pictures from a cruise ship on his way to South Africa.
