Winter in Egypt

by bdougherty

Be prepared - it can get unexpectedly chilly in January. I wore a light coat throughout end of Dec and all of Jan the year I spent in Cairo. Light layers will work just as well if you'd like to avoid packing something you may not need.

Salt

by MikeySoft

.It can get very HOT in Egypt. Southern Egypt got well into the 40s C, well over 100F when I was there in April 2008. It is also very dry, so dry you don't realize how much you are perspiring. In addition to drinking plenty of fluids, your body needs salt. It may be hard to find salt while traveling. Most of the hotels have a hard boiled egg as part of breakfast, but many times it is hard to find salt at the breakfast table. So maybe you should stop at your local fast food restaurant before you leave and get some salt packages to take on your trip. Please rate my tips should you find then interesting or useful.

Bring Real Sunglasses or clip-on.

by MikeySoft

.My prescriptions glasses have "Transitions" lenses. You know, the ones that turn dark in the sun. That way, I don't have to worry about carrying second sunglasses or clip-ons.I never had a problem then them. However, there was a heat wave when I was in Luxor, something like 45C or well into the 100s F. My glasses were only getting slightly gray. They were not getting dark.First I felt there was something wrong with my glasses. Maybe they wore out. In a few days, after the tempture went down to the low 90s F, they worked again. So, for some reason, Transitions lenses don't work well in high tempture. So, it is a good idea to bring real glasses or clip-ons.Please rate my tips when you find then interesting or useful.

general Packing List

by pangtidor

Bring the good backpack for the young ones and backpackers; get the trolley-strong type for the seniors and luxury travellers. Bring the light and cotton ones for the summer time (March to September-October). Bring a jacket and trousers for the hikings and rail-bus trip. For the ladies, bring alternative layers; in case you see the dirty looks on the street from your mini dress. Good walking or sport shoes and more shocks will be a must. Bring the emergency medicines for fever and diarrhea; the pantyliners are difficult to find in some areas too. Tissues, wet tissues or hand sanitizer in your bag all the time. Take the powder for your shoes and feet with you too. Bring a big capacity of memory card, you are going to take thousands of great pictures here. Mini DVD for your handycam is difficult to find in some area. Pack the beach gear if you are going to go at The Red Sea Area. Many...

KEEP THESE HANDY

by pangtidor

For your safe and comfortable journey in Egypt, keep these ones handy and secured. PASSPORT AND THE TICKETS for the police checking on the train, bus, and tourism sites. 20, 10, 5 EGYPTIAN POUND BANKNOTES; for tipping if you are happy with the services only. 1 EGYPTIAN POUND BANKNOTES for toilet fee; you have to pay for almost all the public toilet in Egypt. WATER for the heat; the water at the tourist sites will be ridiculously expensive. HAND OR LIQUID SANITIZER for cleaning your hands. THE SUNBLOCK for the sunlight; the sun will be still unbearable at some tourist sites even on winter time. The most important thing is YOUR CAMERA AND HANDYCAM for the unexpected magnificent views anywhere.

My packing list to Egypt

by VZ-Pam

Large carryon Bag if you intend to buy fragile perfume bottles or Abalaster items. Winter months definitely a jacket (night time is cold), hats, Sunglasses, sneakers (lots of rocks & irregular roads in Aswan or Luxor) & scarf. Hand Sanitizer, Immodium, Tylenol, SPF lotions, Pocket tissues, bottle water.Dust Mask for people who have allergies to sand & dust in the desert or Quarry area or inside the Tombs of Vally of the Kings or Queens. Large storage capacity CF/SD cards or memory sticks are recommended since those are very expensive in Egypt. Lots of 1 Egyptian Pound Bills & Lots of USD $1 or 1 Euros. I prefer Egyptian pounds to get good deals.

don't forget

by rikhelle

one back pack and one day pack Trainers are the beat things and maybe a pair of sandals to where at night. And as far as clothing light cotton is soooooooooooo hot.ooh and swimmers for the bar in the pool. Mossie spray is a good thing to have.when it come to the bad water and the tummy bug you get, the tablets from home tend not to work because it is a different type of bug, get them from the locals. DON'T DRINK THE WATR. .As much memory space as you can you will have no trouble filling it up .Toys to give to local kids, i.e. A little kola, kangaroo ECT

Suntan lotion, What???!!! WHY!?

by michaelxxx

The suntan lotion is a must to bring when going to Sharm! If you are planning to swim in the Red Sea, do bring one, its really hot and sunny and it will totally destroy your beautiful skin!Unless you are a type of person who enjoys the sun, like my dad! When we went swimming in the Red Sea, people thought my family just came out from an asylum! WHY? Because our faces and our body were FULLY covered with SUNTAN LOTION! Am not exagerating! My mom look like the ghost in the movie "The Ring!" But you know what? My mom claims she looks young for her age because she always puts suntan lotion everytime she goes swimming in the hot hours of the afternoon! So if your planning to go swim in Sharm, it won't hurt to bring a suntan lotion, it will be your lifeguard from the blazing sun! Unless you are like my dad, who does not care to swim with it! (He likes to sun bait!)

Umbrellas, Hats or get Burned!

by matt10gonzalez

This is simple to listen to, but kind of hard to bring (and remember!) in reality! The weather in Egypt is no joke- when it's 12 noon-3 pm, it's totally wearing and tiresome! No, you don't sweat much here, it's a dry heat- but a killer one: Staying too long in it can give you migraines and a bad day! And this doesn't only happen to Filipinos (tropical people) but also to all the people around the world! Notice, Egyptians take a long nap from 11-3? And that the Valley of the Kings is totally empty at noon? Because only SO few can take the heat! MOTHER: "I always remind myself to bring umbrellas and hats but the moment we tour, I always forget them!" BROTHER: "Ay...mom you're getting senile!" Don't be senile too: Bring some protection for your head or get burned!
