Stuff Toys or No Attention For You!

by matt10gonzalez

For the teenagers and kids! (And even for adults who are SO young at heart!) Listen to this:Childish or not, bring a stuff toy! YES!Believe it or not, a stuff toy can work miracles! Wanna feel popular in Egypt? Show kids and female teens your stuff toy! They'll go wild with it! They'll simply adore it! They'll even kiss it! No kidding! (See my off-beaten tips for more info!) And one more thing: Practice your charm and acting! (Acting like Mr. Bean here will SURELY click with the Egyptians!) They'll love you more! And when they ask you to give your toy to them, simply say no (act sad so they'll symphatize with you!).Who said those stuff toys were totally garbage?

Pack a Smile or Suffer!

by matt10gonzalez

Pack a smile guys! Even no matter how chaotic, or how frustrated you got when you felt you were ripped off or even if you nearly died while crossing the streets in Cairo, pack a smile! Believe me- it's simple, yet HARD to do! But if you do, you'll enjoy your trip 10x more! Why, maybe you won't even need to sightsee at all!FAMILY'S COMMENTS: MOM- "It's so easy to talk right?" DAD- (Tries his best to smile in front of the camera.)BROTHER- "I smile when I eat!"TEENAGE COUSIN- "I'll smile when I go home...(Is homesick already!)"

Egypt essentials

by Tijavi

Sturdy footwear that could burrow through the sand. Columbia's or Timberland's desert/hiking boots are ideal. Lip balm (!) to soothe flaky lips due to heat. I was never successful in finding a 'regular' lip balm in Cairo, and had to settle for a cherry-flavored one - and it was like wearing a lipstick - a flaming red lipstick at that! So embarassing!

Pack light!

by schat

Unless you prefer a specific brand, just about anything you need can be found in Egypt. Pharmacies sell most medicines without a prescription, and often have doctors on hand to advise you on what to take. Toiletries are available in pharmacies and "supermarkets." There are many photo shops in any city, where you can transfer photos onto a CD, get film developed in an hour, get film and batteries, etc. If you buy film in a photo shop, it's usually cheaper than home, but in hotels and at the sites, it's outrageously expensive. Zip lock bags are great for storing anything from snacks to toiletries. They aren't readily available outside of places like Cairo and Luxor, so bring a few with you.

A little planning goes a long way

by gabriellefox

As usual I recommend using a large duffle with wheels. It is very accomodating when full and can flatten down when you need to store it. These clothing tips are obviously aimed at the more flamboyant traveller.Metallic sandals take you from daywear to an effortless evening look.Bikinis, T-shirts, Kaftans, Sarongs and Shorts with a couple of summer dresses cover all the basis. Rubber reef shoes are a must to avoid the broken corals on the shore. If you have a hat - wear it. Lots of sun tan lotion and soothing aftersun. The sun is deceptively strong here. I would not suggest going any lower than SPF 15. Reapply frequently. Carry a bottle of water and lip balm.I always travel with Immodium and Senekot as a change in diet can take you either way. Comparable to UK prices. Hat, sunglasses, rubber reef shoes, towel, suntan lotions SPF 15 plus sarong or kaftan to cover up. A waterproof...

BINOCULARS!

by NinaRira

If you're travelling to Eygpt I can't tell you how glad you'll be that you brought some binoculars. It was the best thing we did and turned out to be a huge advantage when visiting some of the larger sites, as well as being able to see more along the banks of the Nile and Lake Nasser when we did the cruises. Best of all though, for any other bird lovers like me out there, it means hours of joy, watching Pied Kingfishers, Hoopoes, Bee-eaters, Merlins, Vultures and more. Essential viewing!

Sun screen and Umbrella

by Sambawalk

Short and light cotton clothings are must. Bare in mind the muslim culture as well in selection of your clothing to wear. Umbrella is a must, in addition to sunscreen and hat with light cotton clothing.

Permethrin

by janicewilson

Love it or hate it, I used the stuff and didn't suffer a single mosquito bite our entire trip. Travels included Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Western Desert and Nweiba. If interested, there's a couple of ways to get your hands on permethrin clothing.1. Purchase it. Buzz Off Insect Shield is now partnered with several well known brands. Visit http://www.buzzoff.com/ for the full list.2. Make it. For those on a budget, creating your own permethrin clothing is a weekend project that allows much more bang for your buck. This is the route I chose and for the same amount it would have cost to buy a pair of Ex Officio pants, I was able to permethrin 6 pairs of socks, 6 shirts, two pants, a hat, scarf and jacket. I purchased solution comprised of 13.3% permethrin from the following website: http://bugsource.com/permethrin_13_3_one_gallon_.html.

More Great Reading

by atufft

More great pre-post Egypt reading includes the following texts. I have read them all. All include nice illustrations, often in color, and great discussion of topics of great interest to understanding Egypt--dynastic history, disease and mummification, warfare, and details about the art in the Egyptian Museum and elsewhere. For English literature fans, read Norman Mailer's Ancient Evenings, which is one of his late great novels that appears well researched on the topic of the gods, courtlife, and military exploits of Ramses II. Most of these should be available on-line. The Egyptians were humans and their is much that remains unknown about their construction techniques, but one thing is clear, neither the Hebrew people nor outer space aliens contributed to their efforts.
